2016+ Gaming Laptop Thread: Embracing Pascal's Wafer (Please Read OP)

Is 3 Years Too Soon to get a new laptop?

I'm currently on Year 2 on my Sager NP 6165 and it has 40 minutes of battery. I also really hate the mousepad; it hurts to use it.

Lenovo Y50 looks really good. It has no Disc Drive, which I never use, and 4K resolution monitor, although I doubt its graphics can support modern day 4K gaming.

I try to upgrade every 2 to 3 years, myself, based on when knew GPU architectures come out.

The Y50 SKU with the 4k screen is probably going to be as expensive as a laptop with a much faster GPU, which makes me wary of such a choice. Lenovo has said we won't get the price until the machine is released.

As far as the NP6165, you can get a new battery from eBay for very little.

I'm not sure if I want to invest ~$35 in a battery with a laptop I'm not happy with. Touchpad is really uncomfortable to use and the keyboard is not back lit. Also they are both hot to touch.

The Y50 doesn't need to have 4K resolution; I heard that part is optional from 1080p resolution. I'm just hoping for a laptop next year with Maxwell 20nm Graphics and a Processor update from Haswell, 17 inches, doesn't include an optical drive since I never use it and 1080p resolution is more than enough for my eyes. Oh yeah, a decent touchpad and keyboard is a big plus. I would not recommened to go cheap on those two department. I heard Y40/Y50 series is something to watch out for because of the value it offers.

I'm counting down from 12-14 months for my next laptop. It's surprising how close the performance of laptops and desktops are compared to the previous years. The gap of performance and value have gotten closer compared to before. I can't wait to see what 20nm Maxwell and 14nm Broadwell has to offer.

Definitely don't want it to be too heavy since I'll be lugging it around for most of the day.

Planned Usage
Gaming(Steam & D3 mostly), schoolwork(programming/web design), and media usage such Netflix or Hulu.

Those MSI laptops look so nice. Just really want something that can play stuff reasonably well. Thanks!

Does lenovo y50 has a release date. Or should i bite rhe bullet and get y510p at discounted price. Is 750sli better than 860?

Is 750sli better than 860?

750m sli is slightly below 755m sli, which is on par with a single 770m. A 860m is almost as good as a 770m, while drawing less power. So in raw performance they should be really close, with 860 having the benefit of no microstutter and a lower power consumption.

I am looking into purchasing MSI GT70 Dominator, but I am not sure if I should just wait until Intel comes out with their next generation of central processing units.

In addition to that, I have a couple a questions regarding laptops in general.

1. Would the laptop be capable of playing Dark Souls 2 in maximum settings?

2. Would the laptop be capable of running games such as Kingdom Hearts 1/2 in PCSX 2?

3. Would it be worth it for me to wait for the next generation of Intel processors?

Currently have a cheapass laptop, toshiba satellite Intel core I3, Intel graphics chip, but it runs all my favourite point and click games like the "settlers" lovely and smoothly.

I'm lookin' to buy a laptop for a trip in mid-July. I don't really need it before then, but is there anything upcoming in the next month or so that'd be worth waiting for?

1. Unless it's a horribly unoptimized port, it should handle that game easily

2. Not familiar enough with PCX2 to answer.

3. There's plenty of power in the i7 4800 so I'm not necessarily sure there's a whole lot to gain for game performance by waiting for next gen CPU's. But maybe others are of different opinion on this. The 870M GPU in the GT70 should give you pretty strong performance regardless.

Might as well go with the GE60 Apache.

It releases in May.

I'd take a single 860M over SLI every day.

It's never worth it, to wait for new CPU cycles. Intel has no reason to innovate, so every year we get a measly bump in performance.

Check back in mid-June.

what about this one K.Jack :) i returned the alienware and i was think of getting this one
Asus - 17.3" Laptop - Intel Core i7 - 8GB Memory - 1TB Hard Drive - Black
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB

i wanna play watch dogs and my alienware 14 wasn't good enough, sorry i'm a noob on computers :/

what does everyone think of the new Gigabyte 'p34g v2' ??? To me it looks really appealing, and PC Pro gave it a positive review!

The Gigabyte and the Lenovo Y50 both look promising to me. The Asus G750 series has pros too: raw price/performance, much higher performance cap with faster GPUs, quiet operation even under load, easy to switch components - but it weighs twice as much, not exactly something I'd like to casually carry around. Unfortunately Gigabyte availability and pricing is bad where I live.

Thanks Water. The ASUS is just too heavy, I have to move around for uni to different locations. Gigabyte is available in Australia although the p34g v2 is AU$1849 (including tax). This comes to about US$1715. So its a bit overpriced here too, like most other electronics!!

...and almost as soon as my search for a laptop started, it ended. I had a random belief that they wouldn't have extra laptops at work, but asked anyway, and got a HP Elitebook mobile workstation for my trouble. Instant savings of more than a thousand euros from not having to buy my own <3 <3 <3

I don't need to carry it daily, and it's light and small enough to be convenient to travel with. The Quadro 2000m graphics are well below what I would like, but it's enough for the bulk of my work. Should even run older games decently.

jwtsonga, despite how good the P34g v2 and Y50 look, I was also going to keep an eye out for deals for the older P34g and Y5xx models; they aren't exactly slowpokes either. Just something to keep in mind.

That'll play Watch Dogs. For pure horsepower, I'd rather take the GT70 w/ GTX 870M.

What makes you want a laptop? If you don't need mobility, buy a desktop instead.

I'd visit Desktop-GAF before you buy that. They can probably build you something way stronger, for that amount of money.

i just wanted to get a better laptop then the one i have now, but then again i would rather get a desktop because its easier to upgrade :)

but thank you, ill look into it now :D

Thanks for responding to my post. I spoke to a friend about the laptop. He emphasized that the laptop will overheat, and some of the laptop parts will fail. I have never bought a laptop at this price before, and I am a bit hesitant to pull the trigger on this one because I am not sure how long will this laptop last me. I'd like it to last at least three to four years.

For those that have spent over a thousand dollars on their laptop, how long has it been since you had it? Does the laptop produce a lot of heat? Did any of the parts fail?

The idea that a laptop's heat could make parts fail is pretty silly.

I am not certain if that is the case. I do know that if my desktop GPU, or CPU were to overheat, it would degrade its lifespan. I assume that the same would happen to my laptops GPU, and CPU as well. Do you think that this laptop will last at least three to four years?

The thing is, laptop components are rated to run safely at much higher temperature thresholds. You have to be constantly well over 100C (which the laptop won't allow you to do anyway) to even hypothetically alter the components' lifespan.

If you are truly worried about heat, wait until December when 20nm Maxwell Nvidia graphics chips are manufactured. These will run cooler as they are 30% smaller than current 28nm graphics chips. So I believe we will see a bit of a jump when 20nm graphics chips come out....those will be more efficient and faster as well as run cooler

Does anyone know if this can play BF4 and Watch Dogs at Medium - High?

Asus X550LN
Intel® Core™ i7 4500u 1.8GHz Processor

8GB DDR3
15.6" 16:9 HD (1366x768)

With WD asking for a quad core in the minimum system requirements, this machine definitely won't be playing that.

Alright thank you for answering my questions. I think I will wait a bit more to see how things turn out with the latest 800m series.

So I'm currently looking for a laptop to last at least 4 years if not longer being able to run most games in that time frame. Right now I'm looking at this for £1300 from pc specialist but thats right at the top of my price range, should I cut down on ram or anything else to save money?

I don't know what it'll save you, but for gaming 8GB of RAM is more than enough.

Do you really need the SSD?

So how capable will the 860M be? I'm considering getting the Lenovo Y50 when it gets released and I mostly just want it to be able to play turn based strategy games, the Civilization series in particular. Would it be able to run Civ: Beyond Earth when it comes out this fall at decent settings?

SSDs are a must now? Just goes to show how much behind the times I am :)

They've been a must since the GB per dollar drop so precipitously.

I paid $160 for a 128GB SSD, then 1.5 years later I picked up a 960GB one for $500.

Ever since you've turned me on SSD, I've become so used to godly boot times and load times.

I can't return to sole HDD ever again.

I'm so sorry.

The card has some longevity, if TBS are what you play. A lot of 860M benchmarks here. Scroll down.

Too early to speak on Beyond Earth though.

Has there been any more recent rumblings on the 2014 14" Razer Blade?

It's been sitting at "ships in 4 weeks" for like 2 months. My friend is fed-up with his Surface Pro 2 top-end model. Three replacements and two service requests; and he's still getting all kinds of BSODs. He's toying with splurging on the Blade, but it needs to be available here soon.

It's the only laptop out there that I think I could like as much as my 2013 15" rMBP.

Will there be new nvidia cards in December guys???? 20nm cards???
At the moment we don't know, but it's easy to ensure they will release 20nm GPUs in December. All you have to do to make it happen is to buy an expensive new laptop in November.

I have an 860m and it's pretty solid. Can't quite do 1080p with ultra settings in BF4 though, ranging from 30-50 FPS at ultra with AA. I can hit 60 turning down the resolution to 900p/Ultra though so I'd say it's an excellent mobile card. It will only get better as more optimized drivers hit.

Thanks for the response. 30-50 FPS for ultra on Battlefield 4 sounds promising, I'm guessing the card should handle Civilization Beyond Earth without much of an issue... hopefully I'm right.

hi , i have question for grounding a laptop
my bother just bought a new laptop after 6 years
its asus N550JV
333112-asus-n550jv-db72t-angle.jpg

asusN550_4.jpg

if you noticed , this a full body aluminum casing
its very nice , but touching it , you can feel static electricity all the time
how to ground it ?

Until you can buy time (or if time isn't a big deal to you) ssds are totally worth it, and an easy physical upgrade while giving you a chance to just install the base windows without all the junk. I'd recommend a 256 gb for a notebook as the sweet spot.

Hey, I'm wanting to get a high end laptop.

Country: USA
Maximum budget: $1200-$1500
Max size: Don't really care. Pref a larger screen but will opt for performance over screen size.
Planned usage: I won't be playing games on it. Mainly just editing RAW photographs and possibly some video editing. I want a super fast computer though with littler time waiting on applications and start up. May play TF2 or Starcraft 2 but that's it. Don't care about maxing graphics .
Whatever else you find relevant, misc: 1920x1080 Res, Intel CPU and SSD on top of a HDD for storing content. preferably pretty quite. I'm guessing I won't need a super high end graphics card? Just great RAM and CPU?

Thanks!
