WASHINGTON -- Senate Democrats could not advance their bill to raise the minimum wage on Wednesday, failing by a vote of 54-42 to clear the filibuster threshold.

The vote was an early hurdle for legislation that Democrats have put at the top of their economic agenda for the year. Even if the measure eventually garners the 60 votes needed to overcome a Republican filibuster in the Senate, it still faces long odds in the GOP-controlled House, where Republicans have shown no interest in bringing it to the floor.

Senate Republicans were expected to block the bill, which would raise the minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10 per hour and tie it to inflation so that it rises with the cost of living. Democrats are hoping the issue will play well for them in this midterm election year given the overwhelming support among the general public for hiking the minimum wage.

"They don't even want us to have a proper debate on the bill, let alone pass it," Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) said ahead of the vote. "What is so radical about what we're trying to do?"

Discussion on the measure fell along familiar ideological lines on Wednesday. Democrats pointed out how the wage floor has eroded in recent years, leaving more low-income workers below the poverty line. Republicans argued that a wage hike would hurt the very workers it was meant to benefit.

"It will actually hurt more people than it helps," Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) said. "It would be great if we lived in a world where Washington dictates what wages can be, and peace, love and happiness will break out, the Age of Aquarius, because Washington has somehow distributed free money."

The federal minimum wage was last raised in 2009, as part of a package of increases that had been signed into law by President George W. Bush. Absent action from Congress, cities and states around the country have opted to raise their own minimum wages well above the federal level. The idea of hiking the minimum wage generally polls very well, with more than 60 percent of Americans tending to back it, including a large share of Republicans.

In addition to tying the wage floor to an inflation index, the Democrats' bill would also raise the so-called tipped minimum wage for restaurant servers to 70 percent of the standard minimum wage. The tipped minimum wage is now $2.13 per hour before tips and hasn't been raised since 1991.

The Senate bill was introduced by Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), the House bill by Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.).

Of course.

Dems need a super majority to get any real legislation through.

The funny thing people on minimum wage is what is causing to greater use of welfare programs and food stamps. These dumb dumbs. If they want to continue to complain about OMG food stamps, they're missing the big picture here.

"It will actually hurt more people than it helps," Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) said."

This is an out and out lie.

Could someone fluent on this explain me this bit:

"It will actually hurt more people than it helps,"

How?

The idea that it will cause people to actually loose their jobs as companies cut back the number of minimum wage jobs they offer if they have to pay more money.

If you raise the price of something, demand goes down. Higher wages means that they hire less people. But the picture is way more complicated than that.

I find it disgusting how big business and Republicans are against the minimum wage increase and for gutting welfare and foodstamps. How the fuck are low-income families supposed to make due then?

You can get the wage to a point where it's actively preventing more than a fraction of a % of people from receiving employment. We're clearly not at that point right now, though, and it's unlikely that the proposed changes would get us dangerously close to that point.

Work harder. This is America, and everyone in America who works hard can make a decent living, so if you aren't making a decent living its because you're not working hard enough.

Easy

54-42 = LOSS

The new math..

For one, Walmart helps their workers sign up for government assistance..quite helpful, and theres no need to increase wages!

There's nothing to explain. It's a bullshit talking point. History, among other things, proves it to be wrong. The Republican party do not care about harming the American public for the benefit of their corporate puppeteers so this was entirely expected.

Republicans and libertarians want cheap uneducated labor, so they will block any bill that increases the minimum wage and public education.

Easy enough to check, what happened the last time minimum wage was increased?

It's actually very difficult to check, because you have to isolate the increase's impact from all the other factors that can affect employment. Many studies show that it does affect employment negatively - some don't, and some have even shown that it increases employment (the famous New Jersey study done in the 90's)

Maybe instead of sitting on their asses all day taking advantage of the government, they can instead go work hard and get a real job that pays well?

They are supposed to work multiple shifts for less than minimum wage to simply subsist. It's not a coincidence. They are trying to create an underclass that is competitive with illegal immigrant labor. They really are comically evil.

But we have gaf-ers here who'll defend it to the hilt. Lots of them.

Republicans don't make sense anymore. No marriage for the gays because Jesus and hell no were not helping the poor

No it's not complicated at all. Higher wages means everyone gets fired, but if you give all the money to the CEO's so that the money trickles down, the economy will be perfect forever. It's so simple and easy! Get it right, America.

Two things can happen as a consequence of minimum wage increases:

1) Decreased employment. Higher wages means some employers will choose to have fewer employees.

2) Increased inflation. Higher purchasing power means faster velocity of money, which increases inflation.

I am not necessarily saying I agree with the congressman, by the way. I'm just saying that higher minimum wage laws do have negative consequences. No economic choice is without downsides.

Doesn't really matter that it got filibustered. This was never going to pass the House. Republican majority, and they're a lot crazier than their Senate counterparts.

It's the same song and dance that conservatives and big businesses have been peddling for 30 years: requiring companies to pay more for anything will hurt their profit margins, kill their involvement in the economy, and then ripple out into hurting everyone.

Of course that doesn't actually happen -- the reality is just the opposite -- but that's easier to understand on paper. At this point, after regurgitating the same misinformation for decades, it wouldn't surprise that me that most of the people saying this actually do believe it themselves now.

The average rich person does not care about the average poor person. Why would they? They have money now and their lives are set. Don't bother thinking about whether or not anyone else will make it.

Supposed to be that it turns businesses away from hiring more employees or cutting hours and employees. The other aspect is raising the wages of minimum wage, essentially forces them to raise the wages of many other employees who suddenly are at minimum or near it. It kinda is true to an extent but giving employees a better wage also benefits everyone too

Their big scare is seeing their profit margins go down which will piss off shareholders and boohoos
