Gurren Lagann on Blu-ray in the UK!
So Anime Limited announced the UK releases for Gurren Lagann on Blu-ray and DVD not too long ago. Now this was significant due to the price of the releases that they had projected. Whereas Aniplex in the US released the series on Blu-ray in the US for an SRP of $669.98 (and now available from Aniplex for a generous sales price of $549.98!), the UK Ultimate Edition was projected to cost £150. That's around $250. Furthermore the pre-order price for a while was around £90 which is around $160! Not cheap I assure you, but not a bad price at all I'd say! (As of right now, Amazon.CO.UK has it up for £108).

This UK release however is region locked so although that could be a problem for many across the pond, I think it may still be of interest to many whom own region free players. If it still seems too expensive, don't worry...

Ultimate Edition
What’s more however, our good friends at Anime Limited today have finally posted the approved pack shots for the release so you can get a much better idea of what you're going to get with that cash! I have to say it looks really nice and even has some artwork from the US release which looked great! The picture is below:

And below is what we get inside:
Packaging + Physical information:
  • O-CARD around box (not pictured) with BBFC, Anime Ltd logo and different artwork on it.
  • Clean box using deluxe edition artwork.
  • 4-tray digipack

  • 100 A5 page artbook
What’s on the discs?
  • TV Series, Episodes 1-27 in delicious HD
  • TV broadcast version of Episode 6
  • Film 1: Childhood’s End
  • Film 2: The Lights in the Sky Are Stars
  • Parallel Works (split over Film 1 & 2′s discs)
Extras on the discs?
  • Yoko goes to Gainax bonus feature
  • Sazigen 3DCG Test Animation Footage
  • From storyboard to animation – animated storyboards.
  • Clean Opening 1
  • Clean Ending 1
  • Clean Opening 2
  • Clean Ending 2
  • Music montage from end of the first half of the show
Audio on disc:
  • English dub – 5.1 track
  • Japanese audio – 2.0 track
  • French audio – 2.0 track

  • English subtitles
  • English song/sign tracks
  • French subtitles
This news unfortunately came with some bad news. The release was scheduled for a June 2nd release this year but it has been pushed back to (no later than) August 25th. This is due to work on the art book.

Apart from that everything seems to be going well. It is a shame that it got pushed back but I think overall everything looks to be good so I guess I'll sit back and wait. More at the link HERE

Other versions
Of course Anime Limited are also planning other releases of Gurren Lagann other than just the Ultimate set if that's too rich for your blood! They have both a Regular complete Blu-ray edition and a DVD collector’s Edition. As per the words of Anime Limited themselves:
The standard edition will only contain the four BD50s with the TV series in a standard Amaray package – there’ll be a reversible cover but asides from that it’ll look like any standard Manga UK release. This is why the price point is so much lower as you’re literally getting the basic edition.

A standard version of the films / parallel works may get sold as a pack later down the line, but right now we’ve set no firm plans for it. So right now the Ultimate Edition is the only way but we’ll see how things play out based on demand though!

So are you guys interested? Already have a pre-order in place? Thinking of importing? And if so, what version? Maybe you already own it on Blu-ray and you'd like to let us know on the quality! You'll find more updates at the Anime Limited official site All the Anime

Yeah, I saw this a few months ago, would love to have it but it is too expensive for me. :(

And I still need to watch the movies, so I don't really want the regular edition.

Also interested in the Bebop blurays from the same company. Those prices are a bit easier to swallow.

Why doesn't the US get this treatment with anime box sets?

WHERE THE FUCK IS BEBOP TOO.

Man I feel your pain. The UK still sucks with anime and video games (SMT :() but Anime Limited are doing a great job of giving us some great stuff. Really overdue I'd say. Bebop is planned for the US, not sure about anything more than a conformation so far unfortunately :(

Yeah the links at the bottom I posted might be of interest to you? Under £60 for the full series on Blu-ray seems a good price. The bebop sets end up around the same if not sightly more since they're split into two, but they consequently are higher quality with the packaging (hard slipcover and digi-pack with two 100 page booklets between them)

FAKE EDIT: I guess if you want the movies that's no good for you for now :( Sorry.

Hmmmm pushed back to August? Might get it but shall see, if it was the original date would've been a no, no, lol with Drakengard 3 CE and Mario Kart 8 CE around the same times.

True! All those figures, game and blu-rays etc are killing me! Nice to know you might consider it now! Silver lining eh? :p

rated 15?

lol
Hah didn't notice the ratings! The Beez (Bandai Entertainment) DVD's that released in the UK many moons ago got a 15 too! End of Eva is rated 15 as well :p I think the guy reviewing it fell asleep.

Haha indeed =P, I guess I'll preorder on Amazon for now in case they increase the price further, and then will see when release is nearing whether to keep it. Just a shame I should have preordered when it was £90 X'D

Oh, in other All the Anime news, it's probably worth mentioning that they're winding up for another Kickstarter, this time to give Patema Inverted a similar treatment. £40 ain't bad for a localised version of an Official Design Works plus a film plus various other gubbins. It's going to launch either tomorrow or Friday, and I'll probably stick a thread up when it's live.

Yeah it's a shame. I usually just get my foot in straight away, especially with Amazon as you can cancel an any time (unlike Nippon Yassan! *shakes first*). Oh well, price usually fluctuates, and it's limited so better be safe really! Still a nice price. I was ready to put down the £150!
Yeah I was crazy and bought the US set.

And I don't regret it, that box set is gorgeous.

It sure is! Mad jelly!

I made a thread on it here, thought nobody was interested (or my thread sucked :P). Isn't live until 2PM on Friday in any case.

What the fuck, why can't the US have a price like that!?

A combination of sharing the same blu-ray region as Japan which means the Japanese companies fearing reverse importation, and Aniplex picking up the licence and having the bollocks to simply import the Japanese release and asking for the same amount of money. The UK and Europe, meanwhile, is in a different blu-ray region, and so even if we wanted to pay Aniplex lodsofemone, we wouldn't be able to play the damn things on the vast majority of blu-ray players.

Need US version, whose the US distributor for Gurren?
As the OP noted, Aniplex has the US licence, and simply imported the Japanese release and asked for $600 for it. Unsurprisingly, they still have stock.

You'll be literally better off importing a UK PS3 and the UK version of Gurren Lagann.

Can we import to the U.S? Seems cheaper than out version, no?

Amazon UK should ship to the US unless that has changed? I know the opposite is true since I've imported a lot from Amazon US. Here's some more info on the matter from Amazon UK: LINK

In any case the set is region locked to Region B. Info on that below. A region free player will work. They have a standard Blu-ray set without the extras for a hair under £60 at the moment on Amazon (link at the bottom of the OP if you're interested)

Hmmm, might just get the standard blu-ray in October.

Seems like a good choice. It's a pretty decent price too.

I've been holding out for the Blu-rays for Gurren since they originally announced the American dub. :(

Man it's cruel that they didn't release a normal edition there. Maybe a possibility in the future? I dread to see how much the inevitable Evangelion Blu-ray set will cost. EoE on Blu-ray...I'd do crazy things for that.

Too bad the only one in 5.1 is the terrible dub.

Ouch straight for the low blow! Gotta fit it all on dem Bu-ray some how I guess!

I wasn't holding out for a NA release until this news and the news that Card Captor Sakura is getting a Blu-ray release in the states.

Who owns the rights to Gurren Lagann in the US anyhow? Does Funimation still have the rights to Eva? I would suck so much dick to get a blu-ray boxset with both movies.

Aniplex owns the right to Lagann in the US. I have a link in the OP to the Aniplex site where it's available. As for Eva, I'm not sure. The show was distributed by ADV but they aren't around anymore. Funi distribute the Rebuild films but I'm not sure if that includes the series as well? Not sure. Pretty sure that's a no.

ADV even tried to sue Gainax for working on the rebuild films without them. LINK

Just finished Kill la Kill the other day. Do I dare start this?

Don't dare yourself! Dare me! Dare the me that dares you!
On a serious note, yes it's amazing! Also, if you haven't, watch Gunbuster and Diebuster. 6 episodes each. Both combined are the greatest show ever conceived. Thank me later. Watch FLCL too if you haven't! Basically Gainax.

FLCL was one of the first anime I ever watched after realizing that I was watching anime for years (in the form of DBZ and the like) :D

adding Gunbuster and Diebuster to the list!

Ha. Well ADV did go bankrupt for a while before coming back. I think they originally had the rights to the US dub of Gurren before Aniplex took them.

Yes. Tonally, it's very, very different. But it's still very good and will give you immense feels.

Better deal but the region lock sucks.

I just want the movies on BD... The one time that I hate the fact that NA has the same region code as Japan...

YES! You won't regret it! Best decision you will ever make! Prepare the waterworks and let me know when you finish them down the line :)

Huh you're right. I thought it was always with Bandai. Interesting! They had a decent /interesting portfolio that's for sure.

Whaaaaat the dub is good besides the common use of the word "bro" unironically. I'm interested if they finally got the second movie dubbed, I'm not watching it until then...

I'm generally against dubs, though I can still see why people would like them. GL is one dub I just do not get. It has no intensity and all the screaming moments are all so flat.

Yeah I don't mind dubs at all. Love the Bebop dub for example but whereas a good dub is generally good, a great subbed anime is that much better. The voice actors show much more range and emotion. The screams are legit. Obviously you get bad eggs on both sides but generally if given the option I go for sub.

For most big stuff, aka things that have budgets, the Japanese VA is generally way better. The argument of not being able to tell the quality of another language's acting is, whatever, but it's still harder to tell the shit from the absolute shit. I once heard it put as with English, you can tell the acting quality on a range of 1-10. But with Japanese voice acting it's more like 1-4 & 8-10. You can tell when it's outright bad, where there's no emotion or they're clearly just reading words off paper, but you can't tell the minute differences between the best and the worst.

bless you.

I pre ordered a while back when it was in the mid £80's. Still my most anticipated release of the year. It looks great but sad that it's delayed. AL are becoming synonymous with delays.
