I couldn't find the original release from AFP, and don't know how recent this is. It is more up-to-date than one published by AFP on April 19, both can be found here:

So Putin is now "suggesting" that Ukrainian troops withdraw from the southeast region? If you can't officially send in troops then why not just covertly stir up shit until you get your way.

I think even my Russian step-mother may be thinking unpatriotic thoughts at this point.

Soon she won't be allowed to have unpatriotic thoughts. Everything will be back like it was during USSR.

I don't know if people realize, but during Soviet Union things were kind of crazy. There's a reason why Western Ukraine is so anti-Russian. During 70s my mom was not allowed to go to church on Easter. The teachers were instructed to stand next to the entrance to the church to make sure that their students are not there.

It's unfortunate but the writing has been on the wall for a while now. Russia will get their way in eastern Ukraine. Western response has been too tepid and fractured to really change the outcome of this chess match. Whether the region is annexed or is simply given more autonomy the endgame will likely be the same.

So, outside of actual fighting, what are the possible out-comes here? Eastern Ukraine gets broken off and absorbed into Russia? Or Ukraine gets split down the middle, Cold War-style into East and West? It's pretty obvious at this point that, short of military intervention by NATO, Russia is just going to keep it up until eastern Ukraine more or less belongs to The Great Leader™.

If Ukraine is split, I hope Russia installs another anti-fascist protection rampart to protect the good people in the east from fascists as it did so succesfully in Cold War Berlin.

Today's rally. Guess where this is from? :)

SPOILER:
St Petersburg, Russia

There were also Nazi rallies today in several German cities:
[IMG]http://abload.de/img/1198770872q2yt8.jpg

But how is this connected to the conflict in Ukraine?

I guess the contradiction in terms between Russia saying neo-Nazi activities give it the right to intervene in Ukraine when said country hosts and in some cases seemingly cultivates one of the largest resurgences of neo-Nazi movements.

I remember my Russian step-mother said that Crimea has always belonged to Russia and that Putin only wanted to help the people there (because they were being abused and mistreated by Ukrainians - which turned out to be a complete fabrication). Also, that Russia would never make moves into Ukraine.

It's amazing what control of the media can do. We have skepticism of reports even though we're subject to propaganda as well (just not on that level) but it's key to remember a lot of these people were alive during the Soviet Union and are still under those same mindsets in a lot of ways. Just because it's not the Soviet Union anymore doesn't mean the effects it had on its people is all gone.

I just don't understand what he's trying to accomplish since this only pushed more countries away from Russia.

Just because the name was lost doesn't mean the ideals were and now it's a fight between the old Russians and the moderate ones that don't want to go back to those days. This doesn't mean other nations are perfect as I've said before (just restating it before it goes back to that topic) but Russia has never recovered from the Soviet Union and Putin has always been suspicious to me. It's just that his true colors are finally exposed to the rest of the world who were trying to convince themselves everything was fine now and that there's no need for defenses.

In other worlds; "Ukraine, your not allowed to have an army in your own country."

This is going to blow up pretty quickly. I do expect Ukraine to use proper force if things get really bad this time around.

What I am seeing is the Ukrainian Military is on the move. All checkpoints around Sloviansk taken out again. Apparently Military circling another city too.

@StateOfUkraine · 1h
According to our information right now, all checkpoints around #Sloviansk #Ukraine have been attacked
‏@StateOfUkraine · 1h
According to reports, #Kramatorsk #Ukraine is being surrounded right now by Ukraine's military. Not clear whether it is being stormed.

What I am seeing on twitter is apparently a Helicopter attacked something on the outskirts of Slavyansk. No confirmation on whose side it belongs to or anything.

Easy enough to be another false flag as Russia uses the same copters and Numerous Ukrainian copters were captured in Crimea. Checking with Government things and not seeing anything on Ukraine's side

Oh boy, this is definitely not going to help the situation at all.

Oh boy, this is definitely not going to help the situation at all.

Reuters is reporting a large scale operation beginning. Practice operations the other night make sense now. They were practicing storming buildings etc. At this point Ukraine is damned if they do and damned if they don't. Russia is not going to back down.

Edit: Photograph of helicopter shot down is from Chechnya.

"We're getting more information that #Sloviansk #Ukraine is being stormed and that heavy armor is being deployed in addition to air power"

"Reports, again unverified and unconfirmed, of fighting in centre of #Sloviansk nr railway station #Ukraine"

Not a small little operation either. Tanks and air assets and attacking the city from all sides.

Military may be moving into Kramatorsk now as well. Sirens are going off which have been used by the insurgents to alert forces throughout cities.

So far just tweets.

@StateOfUkraine · 35m
Sirens in #Kramatorsk #Ukraine. Ukrainian military may be entering the city now.

Wonder what will happen if the mad mayor decides to go after the hostages. European governments will be pissed at Kiev but their public opinion might go nuts.

I do suppose a third choice would be to surround the city and cut it off completely from everything, until the Russians/paid military (or whatever they are) give up.

The Ukrainian Interior ministry just released this statement:

"At 4-30 am an active phase in the area Sloviansk ATU - Kramatorsk .
Forces of the Interior Ministry , Natsgvardii , Sun At the current moment to take control of checkpoints 9 terrorists in the city limits Sloviansk . City taken in dense ring.
Ukrainian special forces against terrorists opened fire with heavy weapons. Including grenade launchers and MANPADS. There are dead and wounded pilot . Comes the real battle with professional mercenaries. Terrorists do not shun fire hiding behind civilians Sloviansk of residential apartment buildings - are aware of the order units ATO NOT to fire back with threats residential facilities .
Operation continues according to plan.
Ask a resident of Slavic and Kramators'k not take to the streets and be careful in the windows.
We , together with the Minister of Defense and Commander Natsgvardii here.
Railway posts in the area will be closed to the ATU in the coming time . Driving on the road in the area is limited to a minimum Sloviansk . I ask all the time on the stock to refrain from trips .
Working .
Thank you to all the officers and fight with honor.

Our goals ATO requirements and simultaneously to terrorists is simple: to free the hostages , lay down their arms and release the administrative buildings, restore the normal functioning of urban infrastructure."

I doubt its going as far as The Government is saying. footage coming out of Slovyansk doesn't line up with the reports.

Kyiv needs to ball up and either go all in or go home. These checkpoint pop shots do nothing but recruit more Russians to come over the border.

Radio Channel the separatists were using was full of requests for vehicles to head out to the border to pick up people from Russia wanting to come defend.

(Reuters) - NATO said on Thursday it was looking at ways to bring Georgia "even closer" to the military alliance, in the latest signal of support for the former Soviet republic as tension mounts between Russia and the West over Ukraine.

Yeah, okay. We all know how that's going to end.

NATO is ratcheting up the rhetoric a ton. 2nd in command of NATO came straight out and said if Russia wants to view NATO as an adversary its time for NATO to look at Russia as an adversary again and no more cooperation or gestures to work together.

Edit: showing up on twitter fresh explosions and gunfire in center of Slavyansk now. Perhaps Military is finally going beyond checkpoint skirmishes. Separatists radio channel calling on women and children to rush to town center to form shield

Thats just not cool in the least bit. I mean...I guess its a strategy of sorts, but that really shouldnt sit right with any organization, no matter where their loyalties lie.

I'm really curious to know what kind of woman hears that and just grabs her children to rush in front of the tanks and in the middle of the firefight.

- Jesteśmy gotowi bronić suwerenności i wolności sąsiadów Rosji, która wyraźnie próbuje odbudować w regionie swą hegemonię i ograniczyć ich suwerenność pod pretekstem obrony swoich interesów - mówi zastępca sekretarza generalnego NATO.

- We are ready to defend the sovereignty and freedom of Russia's neighbors, which clearly is trying to rebuild its hegemony in the region and to limit their sovereignty under the pretext of defending their interests - says the Deputy Secretary General of NATO.

I don't want to find out. Perhaps these people should be deported; they obviously don't want to live in Ukraine; send 'em away to Russia. Make their dream come true.

Apparently on Separatist Ham Radios the order to abandon Slavyansk as HQ has been given with new Command being placed in Horlivka.

Curious to see how this will impact hostage situation.

@EuromaidanPR 1m
Terrorists in #Sloviansk are preparing provocation with possible death of ppl.The goal is to simulate"brutality"of #Ukrainians army -Tymchuk

Sure hope that isnt why there is a call for women and children

Russia now stating Ukrainian action has killed "last hope" for Geneva Agreement.

@BBCBreaking 13m
Russia says Ukraine military operation kills "last hope" for Geneva deal on de-escalating the crisis

It must be something else to live on the other side of this and be one of the people who can see a report about"peaceful unarmed citizens" shooting down helicopters with Missile launchers etc and still be able to believe the whole "unarmed civilian" thing.

Russia: Apparently it is everyone's fault but their own. In reality...

I watched all 31 dispatches available so far on Vice.
I am really surprised and impressed with the level of humanity the Ukrainian military forces have had so far. Although some may be quick to call them cowards and even traitors (to those who switched sides), I can understand and see why they did not really try to pose a threat.

Watching armed militia and civilians raiding police stations and military bases and the soldiers and police officers not killing or wounding the people is an amazing sight to see, whether or not you agree with what is happening.

Could you imagine if that happened in the U.S.? There would be a massacre, civilian or not, everyone there would be dead if they didn't listen to the warnings.

Several more journalists have been kidnapped. Apparently another American. Mike Giglio from Buzzfeed is one of them. He has been a consistent source of news online from on the ground.

@olgatokariuk 10m
Reportedly foreign journalists were kidnapped by separatists in #Sloviansk today: Mike Giglio from @BuzzFeed, CBS, SkyNews crews #Ukraine

Swedens Foreign Minister is an entertaining guy

@carlbildt 1h
Ukrainian helicopters shoot down in Slovyansk. Some elderly ladies bought some RPG’s or missiles at the local grocery store, I assume.

New Updates:

CBS News and buzzfeed crews now released.
@clarissaward 12m
We've been released.
@clarissaward 8m
One of our crew was beaten but we are all ok. Thanks for concern

@mike_giglio 4m
All the journalists and crew taken with me, including my brave translator Lena, are released and safely back in Donetsk as well.

Separatist Leader in Horlivka refusing to take command from Strelkov in Slavyansk. Instead trying to flee the city.

EuromaidanPR 6m
There are troubles in delegation of power from"Strelok"(leaderOf #Russian subversive group in #Sloviansk)to"Abwehr"(subversive in #Horlivka)

@EuromaidanPR 6m
"Abwehr" refused to take command and is trying to leave #Horlivka at the moment. #Ukrainian security forces are taking actions to arrest him

Government issues chance to surrender
“Ukrainian authorities are ready to amnesty participants of the conflict and people who seized the administrative buildings but only the ones who did not commit war crimes. We are willing to hold negotiations with protesters and their delegates. But terrorists and armed separatists should expect only inevitable punishment,” Avakov told.

Any idea how this is going?

Apparently surprisingly well now.

Luhansk Separatists have surrendered and left the buildings they seized 2 days ago.

Slavyansk is said to be almost fully under Ukrainian control again though there is still some dangers as Separatists have apparently placed land mines etc in city.

Sloviansk almost clean from the terrorists. -- Stepan Poltorak, National Guard chief.
Terrorists are using military snipers, mobile squads in berkut unifroms and blast mines, informs Ukrainian Security Service Anti-Terrorist Center.

After the call for human shields was intercepted and reported on the "Mayor" issued an order calling for civilians to go home and stay home.
@EuromaidanPR 31m
After our info on “live shield” being organised by self-proclaimed “mayor” of #Sloviansk,he published video w/ asking ppl stay home -Tymchuk

4 Men were detained in Slavyansk who had int heir possession the kind of rocket launchers used to take down 2 helicopters today. Assumption is thy were the gunmen

I'm amazed they actually had the hardware and the training to take down the Ukrainian choppers.

Thanks for the updates antonz.

Not really, as they are/were sitting on top of giant Soviet era stockpiles. Once you have the hardware, it's not hard to find people who are trained in the use of MANPADS during their military service.

The real surprise today is just how little russia has said. Rather surprisingly the only thing they did was ask the OSCE to talk to the Ukrainians to stop. I have a sneaky feeling that the russians actually want the loony "mayor" out of the way. He's been very bad for their image.
