US PSN: Golden Week Sale Celebrates Japanese Games

I've convinced myself I've had enough of the sale (I say now, days before my Vita arrives). While I'd like to get the Ateleir series some love... having bought P4G, I know where a very large portion of my time will go, and if I try to split it between multiple long RPGs (knowing my track record) I'll finish neither.

I always see nothing but absolute raving for Persona 4 but I'm not exactly fond of traditional jrpgs. Anyone play it who doesn't like jrps and what did you think?

I loved it.

The Pokemon comparisons are because of what you use to fight are Personas that can learn moves by leveling up and they have weaknesses and resistances to Fire, Ice, Wind and Electricity. I love the combat system. You can let your teammates act on their own and it's a real wordy battle system as people are always talking. It's really good. Also you can decide to tell your teammates what to do but I only did that for bosses, otherwise I'd get crushed.

Aside from that, it's nothing like Pokemon. Great story vs non-existent story. Dungeons are creative in their themes but are somewhat boring in their structure. Great characters. Surprising soundtrack that turns out to be great and has many different styles and tones that contrast with one another (as do the story events - funny, dark, happy, sad, suspense, etc). I love the vibe of the town. The UI is great and great-looking. Voice acting is really good too. You probably know by name Troy Baker (Joel, Booker, Delsin, Matt Baker, etc.) and Laura Bailey (Fetch, Saints Row Female Main character, etc.) too.

Those extra 20 hours spent on spring cup grinding.

LOL!! Tell me about it! I had the game freeze on me once while I was doing this and I didn't save the game for a while so I was like "Nope, not getting the rich ending or true ending. Forget it!"

That was the PS3 version a couple years ago. I still haven't been motivated to go and try it again. It would've been the first game I've ever platinumed. :(

Anyway, dang nabbit, a nice sale for sure and I would totally have rebrought Atelier Totori Plus and Meruru Plus, but..... I still don't have a Vita! The slim is coming out soon and I'm still not that interested in paying all that money for one. I already have the Atelier games on PS3 and I'm still waiting for that one game I just totally have to get, but I don't think it exists.

Maybe when Tales of Hearts comes out, I might be more interested. I also want to learn more about that Phantasy Star game Tri-Ace is making. It'll likely have better music from my man, Motoi Sakuraba, than Hearts will.

This will do. My PS3 is still getting tons of use - love it! PS4 is just... sitting there =/

Ended up getting P4G and Muramasa. GAF is the sole reason I got a Vita and P4G since I have never really played Japanese games or owned a handheld before. Haven't played P4G yet but the Vita was one of the best purchases I have ever made. Can only expect the same from P4G. Muramasa is awesome from the little I played. Was sad the DLC isn't on sale.

You're not done yet kid. Go get Ys: Memories of Celceta, COMPLETE THE TRINITY AMIGO!

I think my total was around $85. Ys, Muramasa, Atelier Meruru and Ayesha, and Neptunia Victory. Still debating on going back for Armored Core and Soul Calibur V

Can someone sell me on the atelier games? I like JRPGs generally speaking. Googling around for descriptions seems to make them sound like they are relatively narrativeless grindfests designed for teenage girls, but I feel that must not be right based on the positivity I'm seeing in this thread.

Looking at this thread it seems totori the meruru is the order to go in.

I suggest you look up the term "moe". The games were mostly designed with a male audience in mind.

The Atelier games are basically turn-based JRPGs combined with an alchemy simulator. The general setup is you have a few years to perform certain tasks--in Totori, you're trying to get your adventurer license and find out what happened to your mom, who was also an adventurer--and you do this by crafting items, taking quests and fighting monsters. The battle systems, while competent, are secondary in nature; the real star is the alchemy stuff, which involves gathering ingredients and combining them to create items for quests or to use in battle (which, if you're good at alchemy, eventually overpower the damage you can do with weapons by a lot).

The closest analogy I can think of is Recettear, minus the shop management aspects and plus the alchemy. Recettear is actually the reason I got into the Atelier games; the franchise was the only thing that seemed close to what Recettear had. But the production values are a lot higher and there's a lot more content--we're talking 30 hours for a first playthrough at least.

Ys is an action RPG, very fast-paced. They have a reputation for being balls hard--I died so many times to the first boss in Ys Seven (which you encounter half an hour into the game!) that I stopped playing the game for a while after I finally beat it because I was afraid of what would come next. Turns out it's not so bad, you just need to master the dodge/rolling moves and stuff like the flash guard to block damage and whatnot. Ys is a game I've always associated with mobility above all else--I was rolling and dodging all over the place, and it's a ton of fun. There's no overworld per se; rather, all the areas you go to are connected to one another, so it's like the game is nothing but overworld (but with level transitions).

I'm not sure what to compare it to, exactly, as most of the action RPGs I've played aren't this fast. Some people have compared the Ys series to Zelda games but personally I don't really see it, as they're not particularly heavy on puzzles and it's really about the fighting. Hopefully I gave you a decent idea of what to expect, though.

I was able to find this post by ctrl-f'ing atelier. Thank you for an excellent post! I think I'm going to boot up recettear, I've had it for years, see if I like it.

Decided to pick up:

ZoE HD
Hot Shots
Chrono Cross

If anyone is casually on the fence about Hot Shots, it's scratching an itch that needed to be scratched. Feels so good to play. I haven't played a HS game since the first and I am loving this so hard.

I really wish the vita version was on sale.

I'm still on the fence whether should I get Ys or not. Is it really good? How about Atelier Totori +?

Ys is an action RPG, where the action is always done right (provided Falcom made it). The story is usually only serviceable (but enjoyable), so if you're a snob about that then it's definitely not the place to go.

I still need to play through Ys II, Oath and Ys Seven but I think I might still get Ys:MoC though by the time I get to it, it'll probably get another price drop or become a PS+ freebie. Definitely getting ToS:C despite it's apparent shortcomings, on the fence with the PS3 version of MGS:HDC since I still own my PS2 copies of 2 and 3 and not sure if I'm up to playing through them again and if I wanted to there's nothing stopping me from using my PS2 versions.

I'm on the fence about Muramasa. On the one hand, I have the Wii version, and I liked what I played, but I haven't played much since I got it when it released. Also, I don't have a Vita yet, even though I have a number of Vita games, and since it's coming to plus in Europe, perhaps it will make it to the US in coming months. On the other hand, the DLC isn't available for Wii, and I don't like the idea of buying DLC for a plus game.

What are the differences between the Wii and Vita versions?

Better graphics and jump button

I'm in the same quandary and after Puppeteer was on sale in the US and not too soon after went free in the us on plus, I'm just fine waiting until it does eventually go free here as well, even if it takes longer.

You should NEVER be on the fence when it comes to Ys games ;)
Get Memories of Celceta and if you're up for some more Ys goodness get Oath in Felghana (3) and Ys Seven.

Playing order should be 3>Seven>Celceta.
If you don't plan on getting the first 2 then Celceta should be fine. Keep in mind that Celceta improves on Seven's gameplay.
All Ys games can be played stand alone and seperatly with any references to past games being minor and unnecessary to enjoy each game.
Something like FF7 Crisis core gameplay?

I've not played Crisis Core, but Ys' combat is simple yet satisfying and fun. Boss fights really deliver too.

Can somebody give me the elevator pitch on Ys? I liked what I played of the ones on steam, but they didn't grab me enough to finish them.

If you couldn't finish oath in felgana, then the series isn't for you. Ys is about quick and fun game play with high adrenaline boss fights with bitching music. No real grinding really. They are also noted for having higher difficulty modes that are a lot of fun and make you master the boss fights.

Ys games have kickass soundtrack, kickass boss fights and fun and IMO well balanced difficulty in terms of gameplay and dungeons. Which one did you play on Steam exactly? 1 and 2? Because Oath in Felghana (3) is the game that can help in deciding if you like the series or not.

This really fucking kills me. We just had an Ester 'sale' here in Australia... what was the average saving... 2 fucking dollars..... I mean, why bother creating the graphics for the store front? There are a bunch of high profile games in that list that are half price.... and what do we get? Two God damn dollars.

It's my first time playing this series and I was attracted with this game before it even release last year. Anyway, bought it already. Hopefully I will enjoy this game.

Just came to say I got Ys and it's awesome! Already like it 10x more than FFX. In fact I don't know if i want to go back to that game. I'm currently
playing blitz ball for the first time w tidus. Or at least the blitz ball tutorial.
Does it get better? Or
Is it safe to say if I don't like it up till now I should just move on and accept my $40 loss?

I stopped playing the game at that point. I hate blitzball so much. If you are interested in the story sure, but lets say the characters act even dumber as time goes on.

Stop playing and keep playing Ys.

FFX is such a garbage game. Almost as bad as II.
