Holy shit @ this thread. I think this is officially the fastest-growing thread in this site's history. Holy shit again.

Got my eye on this one; looks really awesome.

Purchased my ticket to the hype train!

And added some text of my own :P

They made fucking Dark Souls 2, not some tie-in facebook game or something. I don't care if it's not quite as good as Dark Souls or Demon's Souls, I really hate that people are calling them "B-Team" when they made one of the best games of the past 10 years.

I keep seeing these types of replies. B team DOES NOT mean second string/garbage. Dark Souls 2 IS a great game, but all signs point to it being from a different team. Let's call them B.

What would you call a second team in a studio that were not the original creators of the series, and have made a game that (while good) misses the mark on some of the aspects of what made the originals so great?
Do we need to give them a special name or title? Espcially one that has a negative connotation? Just say the game was made by a different team. /shrug

Eh... it kinda does. But let's just agree to disagree and move on. I didn't mean to derail the thread.

Holy fuck. Are there really people in this thread suggesting that the game come out for other platforms? "Port begging" in general makes me feel like I want to punch someone in the face. Those people seriously deserve to be banned.

Yeah, well, that's what happens when AAA software goes to shit and one game comes out that isn't insulting.

I totally agree. I don't think the game is unfairly difficult either, as its reputation sometimes implies. It's really just about being patient and utilizing your skills appropriately, if you're careful you're unlikely to die often except in some boss fights.

I love the series so much, really just blew me away when I first experienced them. I still love experiencing the haunting atmosphere.

I have not got Dark Souls 2 yet though due to the controversy, not sure if that's just useless stubborness at this point or if I have a legit reason to continue to be upset.

IT pretty much hits all the major hot points. You got Sony continuing to get great gamer cred. You have a developer/brand in Souls that has broken over to the mainstream, but still has plenty of cache with the hardcore, and sprinkle on top of that some good fashioned console/PC wars and it's like the GAF perfect storm.

Yup. Sony is really smart in securing this title for several reasons. One, they too have done the research and know that word-of-mouth is the #1 thing that sells things like videogame systems. To get that word-of-mouth rolling, they want to mine the source: i.e., if you get the hardcore talking, they'll inevitably talk to their less hardcore friends and family. Who may some cold Christmas Eve decide to get a PS4 because of what that person said way back when.

With this game, a few compressed images have figuratively set NeoGAF aflame. Think about the massive word of mouth surge that will go out amongst our group? People don't realize it may not sell the same as some bigger franchises, but it creates a huge amount of residual buzz. And it's infinitely rewatchable, making it the perfect fit for a streaming feature.

The second reason is that as far as I'm aware, it plays pretty decently in any territory. There's something special about the game to many, many people, and it defined the generation for some of us.

This thread is moving fast.

That Soul Thirst is real.

Glad to see it kind of confirmed even more so then it has been. I still have a feeling FROM will toss a spanner in the works and do something to really set this game apart from the other Souls games.

See, this all falls apart when you remember that we represent a tiny portion of the consumer base no matter how big we are "size wise" and the exact same (or slightly better) result would be achieved by doing a big flashy trailer at E3 without spoiling it ahead of time and keeping the novelty of the name fresher in people's minds before launch.

Also, your "given the controlled nature of these leaks" implies that you somehow have a concrete, definitive example of a compressed blurry screenshot being deliberately leaked by a company.

So GAF has no influence on the game press, or publishers, or industry as a whole?

I don't know. I don't buy it. Especially with the news that's gets generated out of this place. NODRM started here and absolutely had a effect on early adopters minds and drew attention to console launch plans.

Hell, you got Bishop hunting down paid viral marketers and astroturfers and exposing them. They wouldn't be here if they weren't reaching a consumer audience. GAF is a community of core gamers and developers. I'd say it interests absolutely get the attention of developers, publishers, and their marketing / PR departments to some degree.

What do you call that same team that did things much better than the original team? So much so that Dark Souls 2 is arguably the better game?

Bingo. I don't get why B-Team is considered an insult as some people here say.

Well I'm pretty sure when I got an A in school it was better than a B. Thats why. Instead of saying a 'second team' people say B team, B list actor etc. It could work both ways but don't be surprised that calling something a B tier/B team is considered slightly worse than A. For the record I think DS2 is great.

How about people just call them the 'dark team' and the 'beast team'.

It would be inaccurate. A lot of people from Dark Souls didn't move on to Dark Souls 2.

B-Team or not (which in this case, they sort of were), that isn't to say Dark Souls 2 was bad; it was a great game. I personally don't feel it was better than Dark Souls, though.. and my own ranking remains: Demon's Souls >>>> Dark Souls >> Dark Souls 2

Because its being used as such. Its like Naughty Dogs 'A Team'(U2, TLOU) and B team(U1 and U3). People are more excited for one over the other. Only we dont know that From is actually split up like that. Theres a huge difference between saying b-team and team-b btw.

Thank you.

Christ this shit is going full circle intellectual dishonest at this point. Going from clearly using it as an insult to "oh boy here's the A team game but we don't mean that in a mean way, really!"

Bullshit.

the 'b-team' label is definitely getting old. otoh, if ds2 is indeed a very good game (& i agree it is), the major reason for that is simply owing to the fact that it mostly adheres to a solid, established formula. that it unfortunately does little else other than that, & that, where there are tweaks, it's very questionable exactly how many of them are actually 'improvements', is the problem...

Well, I normally wouldn't think too much if people describe a studio as team 1/2, A/B, or whatever to denote the teams as the term 1/2 doesn't come with a negative connotation to me with no other information to go off of. Case in point, even when I found out Dk Souls 2 was being made by a team 2/B I did not have that effect my hype at all. However teams without the main members (directors for example) often lacks the vision that the original team had (for better or worse). The negative connotation comes from historical evidence/past experiences more than the words themselves. (I am sorry if my earlier post added the point about the quality, my point was only that the new team did not share a vision with Dark Souls, not that the game itself was not good on its own)

What do you call that same team that did things much better than the original team? So much so that Dark Souls 2 is arguably the better game?

Team 2/B? If something like that happens and there is friendly competition between the teams to one up each other, the gamers can only benefit no? I am not trying to put down the effort that is put in by the "team 2s" of the world.

When referring to the team that made DS2, it's not inaccurate. Two teams, one made DS2, one was working on Project Beast, team dark, team beast.

First off, the time period appears to be different, with what could be either shotguns or blunderbusses alongside cutlasses and other more traditional melee arsenal. The time period looks like it could be set in the same time period as the Solomon Kane stories—late 16th, early 17th century.Plumed hats and the like. It also looks to be more focused on horror elements, rather than medieval fantasy.

Beyond that, there appear to be fog gates, massive hounds, and mobs of torch-wielding zombies. It would be very surprising if the images were faked, and I’m fairly confident what we’re looking at here is the real deal, From Software’s first next-gen title.

When Dark Souls II was announced we learned that Souls creator and director, Hidetaka Miyazaki, would not be leading the project. It was rumored that he was working on another project. There’s no telling if Project Beast is that project at this point, but it wouldn’t be surprising.

The game is also apparently being developed in conjunction with Sony's Japan Studio. That was the case with Demon’s Souls, the PS3 exclusive that kicked off the Souls franchise in 2009. If true, this would make Project Beast a PlayStation exclusive, and specifically a PS4 exclusive.

Roll on E3 2014.

Why not just use the director's name? This is a Miyazaki game, if you like his games and is excited about what he has to show next, this is for you.
