Wasn't Harry supposed to die when he turned like 40 or 50? His urgency felt weird. Like I get he just found out and is freaking out, but at the same time, the dude was acting like he had a few weeks left.

Yeah, I thought that too...

Harry is pretty irrational and selfish. His dad is dying and he talks about himself. At the board meeting he appoints Felicia because she wasn't disagreeing with him. He pretty much did nothing but drink when he first saw the scabs.

Yeah, he had another 30+ years under his belt. But for him it wasn't really about survival I think, it was about selfishness, and impatience which came across pretty clearly in the film and about fixing it NOW rather than working to eventually develop a fix.

edit: After Connors I don't think it would make much sense to trust Oscorp with my blood. Maybe that's just me though.

I paid $5 to see it. I never pay more than $5 to see a movie on it's opening weekend (unless it's 3D then it's $8).

The price you personally paid is hardly the point. These films have a built-in audience that will see the movie regardless of how poor the creative decisions are. So filmmakers will never really put much thought or care into the creative decisions, and instead focus on how they can broaden the audience.

Getting to a larger idea though, I do wonder why so many people who clearly thought the film was going to be a garbagefest cashgrab still went on opening weekend. Was there really nothing better to do? Do they enjoy torturing themselves?

Just look at the Transformers and Pirates of the Caribbean franchises.

lol so true.

I think Sculli was being too hard on Peter, Harry was coming off as a spoiled rich selfish kid. He basically pretends he gives a shit about Max to get what he wants lol. Who's to say he wasn't just using Pete? Btw I thought Dehaan was one of the films highlights, dude just looks evil lol- with a hint of Leonardo DiCaprio.

I don't think any other movie uses "chemistry" to describe a couple as much as people have been using it for these two Spider films. I wonder why that is.

IMO his intentions were immediately clear.

was he really using Pete? or confiding in his one true long lost friend he hadn't seen in ten years?

they are best friends remember guys. best friends.

What are you implying here? Does it have to do with them dating in real life?

haha.

Just got back from the movie. I actually quite liked the movie even though it had problem.

I am just curious, I remember in the trailer there was a scene where Harry tells Peter that Oscorp had Peter and his family under surveillance. Did they completely cut that scene/change it? Also there seemed to be several scenes from trailer with Harry Osborn that didn't seem to be in the movie.

Yes to everything.

No. I mean, it feels like that description isn't used for any other romantic subplot for other super hero movies, at least. Kinda like how the word mcguffin was used a ton to describe plot elements of Indy 4, but not used for any other high profile movie.

As far as romance in superhero movies go, few if any actually do have characters that work so well together as they do in ASM.

I have a feeling the director's cut is going to be like 2:45 mins long.

I would actually like this. Does anyone know if there's a less butchered cut of ASM1?
edit: whelp

That would be great but other than Spider-man 2.5 there haven't been any extended cuts.

I guess it is odd. Lol.

I feel like I've used to describe romances in other movies, like say The Spectacular Now earlier this year. But I get what you're saying.

I have a feeling the director's cut is going to be like 2 hours and 45 mins long.

I wanted this with TASM since that left a lot on the cutting room floor, like completely cutting The Lizard's family from the movie, and other stuff that got cut since Sony execs didn't like an early cut they saw. But Sony hasn't done anything of the like since Spider-Man 2 which makes me thing we won't be getting anything here.

Well the first movie had all that stuff cut because it was going to be plot points in this movie. So maybe they will add it for release.

It's one of the few superhero movies where the romance is part of the plot.

I actually wouldn't mind seeing the next love interest being for Spider-Man rather than Peter, i.e. Black Cat.

She doesn't love Peter, she likes the mystery and excitement. Spider-Man gets her off. But she recoiled in horror when he took off his mask because she didn't want to accept that he was a normal guy. It ruined her fantasy. She was a huge bitch with him.

I think Peter was less dickish than in the last movie. As much as he loved Gwen, he tried his best to keep away from her (outside of the creepy stalking), but she kept going to him as well. He did web her hand to the car to keep her away from his fight with Electro and she ends up running Electro over WITH A COP CAR THAT SHE STOLE! Then goes into this tirade about it's her life and her decision and them being a team and how he needs her.

Peter didn't get Gwen killed, Gwen got Gwen killed, Maybe my brother had it right in that it was both their faults since they wouldn't keep away from each other.

Harry Osborn - "I need Spider-Man's blood now! I only have 30-40 more years to live! 30-40 MORE YEARS!!"

Store owner - "Wow! Spider-Man came into my store, stopped a robbery and bought flu medicine. I didn't notice him come in looking like that! Maybe I should check my security cameras and see what he looks like!...NAAAHH!!"

Richard Parker - "Must.......upload......this....file on this modern looking laptop even though it's the mid 90's no matter what!.....Must get file to my secret underground subway computer room and leave incredibly vague clues for my son to find!! IT'S OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE BUT NOT REALLY!!

Pete's only 18 so it would be around the 2000-2004. I don't think he intended for Peter to look for them either.

Dude was crazy and selfish.

It's a rare quality in these movies that tend to pair attractive people together. Reeves and Kidder had great chemistry in Superman 1978. Also felt Anthony Mackie and Chris Evans have great chemistry in The Winter Soldier, although in a friendship sense.

MacGuffin is frequently used when describing movies. Crystal Skull was a particularly bad use of it.

This movie is terrible, granted it's better than the first one but it's still really terrible! But one thig really stood out for me than anything else.

The Richard and Mary Parker subplot is so freaking poorly done like you won't believe it. If they were running away, to a place so they could disappear without a trace and never return but still want to leave a clue of what really happened, why send it to a secret place that NOBODY could find ? Why not just send it to someone you could trust ? or why not just TELL Ben and May the truth to tell it to Peter later on his ? And if the Message was supposed to be sent to public, why not send it to a journalist or a TV station to publish it if you have enough evidence to back it up ? And how the hell this secret train station is still operational after all these years and really nobody found out where it is ? Geez.

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make. Are you saying it's a bad thing people keep harping on how good their chemistry is?

Whoever said this movie was like a Joel Schumacher version of Spiderman was right. That scene with Electro and the scientist was so ridiculously cheesy. It was like it was taken out from one of his Batman movies.

Oh, I saw Sculli mention how Pete could have given him his blood to run test on. There is no evidence that says Harry would have done this. Harry thought the venom would heal him because that's what the files said. Later on in the movie he shoots the venom straight up because he thinks that's all that has to do.

Oh yeah, I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that he just held the Oscorp President/CEO/Whatever the fuck that guy was now hostage in a building with more than enough security and his electric bodyguard was over in voltage land. You're being purposely dense if you think Harry getting the blood or venom on his own terms would mean he was just going to instantly inject that shit.

I rewatched Spider-Man 2 (Raimi's) last night after feeling disappointed with ASM2, and I'm shocked that it's still a really good movie. The action scene of Spidey and Doc Ock fighting on the train is so well done

It shouldn't shock you though, good movies are rewatchable. Lots of superhero movies don't do that for me.

All I know is what was shown in the movie. He got the venom and injected it because he thought that was what happened to Spiderman. He never mentions test or anything. When Pete brings up Connors, Harry calls him "weak." As in implying that he was stronger. Again the files told him the the venom had healing properties and everything we are shown shows he took it as face value.

Absolutely. Love little bits like Spider-Man matrix dodging a tentacle and then swinging off another tentacle to kick Ock in the face. Also earlier when Aunt May gets a piece. Get hype right there.

Everyone looks dumb when they cry. Everyone. Tobey makes horrible faces for everything. Watch the Great Gatsby and just look at him.

But yeah, Tobey makes the dumbest faces.

Having seen this movie, I was reminded of nothing so much as Batman Forever. In a lot of ways, I feel like this is a movie of the '90s comic movie tradition. All the Max Dillon scenes before he becomes Electro felt like a straight rip of Jim Carrey doing the Riddler.

Also, Electro feels so unnecessary and extraneous to the movie. If they wanted to do Goblin as the villain, do Goblin as the main villain. You practically could totally excise all of Electro and only have to do minor work to fix the film.

Then there's that final scene with the kid. Just ugh. If they really wanted to do a trilogy, why did they waste a perfect Act 1 plot of the third film at the end of this film. Seriously, imagine ending with Peter giving up being Spider-man. Then ASM3 starts with Peter realizing that he has to return to being Spider-man. It practically writes itself.

Sony really needs to take a hard look at the post Batman Begins superhero films, and specifically the MCU films. That's what they should be taking inspiration from, not Batman Forever.

They needed to keep Electro focused on Spidey because otherwise it's basically "wait, why doesn't he take over the world?"

Well it shocked me given my turnaround when I rewatched the first Raimi film, but we've covered that before.

Well, I never liked SM1 as much as I did SM2, so it not holding up as well for me isn't too much of a biggie lol.

They needed to keep Electro focused on Spidey because otherwise it's basically "wait, why doesn't he take over the world?"

Dude is pretty overpowered come to think of it. Had Spider-Man right where he wanted before Gwen saved him.

A person who didn't know these characters would more likely come out of that movie calling him 'Sparkles', because he was actually referred to as 'Sparkles' more than he was 'Electro'. Which is great, don't get me wrong.

As an aside, you know how a person like that would get a name? Media coverage. In this movie, Electro says, "Call me Electro" or whatever he said. Like, huh? Same with Rhino yelling out his new self-proclaimed name. That's just cheesy writing.

I AM DEE RHIIINOOOOOO!

The "any volunteer gets an Oscorp mech suit" foreshadowing of the Sinister Six is such a cop out of potential origins. It's really a shame.

Everything to do with Richard Parker should be excised from this series. Not only is it boring, it's also confusing as all hell and completely unnecessary. The origin of Spider Man is able to be so simple: Student gets bit by radioactive spider on field trip. This movie adds layers and layers of garbage onto that.

Electro should've also been eliminated from this movie. The entirety of the character was incredibly cheesy. (Also where did Electro get that sweet outfit when he and Harry teamed up? It had a lightning bolt on it and everything?)

Let's name all the movies where a nerd becomes a supervillain: Batman Forever / Batman and Robin, Iron Man 3, The Incredibles... any others?

Overall, this movie was pretty cool, but the individual parts were pretty bad.
