Transformation characters don't count. Mario, Zelda and Pokemon all had 4 in that game.

Mario uses relatively the same characters over and over. Pokemon keeps on introducing new characters with every iteration. It's not that difficult to see why it gets so many representatives.

The do count, according to Sakurai. Pokemon had 6 characters in Brawl, and currently only has 4. Also, Zelda had 5 in Brawl.

They are counted as separate characters, you're confusing their appearance in the character selection screen to actual character number.

They still had to program different movesets for every transformation; from a development standpoint they are separate characters. I believe Sakurai once used the number 39 to refer to Brawl's roster in an interview once, too.

You guys can argue about if transformations count as separate characters, but I feel, from a franchise representative standpoint, that the transformation characters are a package deal and count as only one rep, even if they do count as multiple characters.
People assume that Sakurai reads literally every thread about Smash on every board out there and is explicitly aware of each and every individuals wants. Because of that, they feel that any action that goes against what they want is trolling directed specifically at them.

It's "trolling" because it's a character that a lot of people had (unreasonably high) hopes for him as a playable character, and dashed them without the kind of teasing he gave to Ridley or Palutena.
But it's mostly what Smith said, it's basically a term of endearment with no real negative connotation. Chill, bruv'.

I'm probably the board's biggest W101 fan and even I assumed there was no chance for character representation. I figured assist trophy, at best.
Ideally, this would be true. However, entitlement is a hell of a thing.

People complaining about Smash having too many Pokemon make me laugh. Pokemon is kinda sorta (just a little) important to Nintendo's history, so it having seven reps would be totally justifiable, especially in a roster that will likely be somewhere around 50 characters.
Heck, assuming that the final roster is 48 characters, 7 Pokemon would be the smallest ratio of Pokemon-to-characters that any Smash Bros. game has ever had: 64 had 2/12 (16.7%), Melee had 4/26 (15.4%), Brawl had 6/39 (15.4%) and a hypothetical 7/48 would be 14.6%.

How did they get grenades and rocket launchers in and keep the current rating in Brawl? Is it because they're seen as more comical?
Bobombs explode, grenades explode, same difference.Because they're less accessible to kids? Not sure.
But PSASBR has guns and has the same ESRB/PEGI I think.
