Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 7: How Can My Smash Brother Be This Cut

Not gonna lie; I genuinely thought Wonderful 101 was a third-party game too. And that's from somebody who completed and loved it.

But really; it's an easy mistake to make; it was developed by Platinum Games, a third-party studio. Sure, third-party studios have worked on Nintendo franchises before (such as Sega with F-Zero GX and Capcom with Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages/Seasons, and Minish Cap), but I believe this is the first time a third-party has actively created an IP specifically for Nintendo.

Now I know that Wonderful 101 is a Nintendo property, I don't think Wonder Red would work as a playable character. The obvious comparison to draw is Olimar, but there are key differences. The whole point of the Wonderful 100 is that they merge to form gigantic weapons. That obviously wouldn't translate to Smash Bros. (except as a Final Smash, but still; what do you do for the base moveset?). That problem could be addressed in one of two ways, both of which have their own problems:

1) Wonder-Red fights solo, except when using a Final Smash. Obviously, this would be pretty lame. It's established even within Wonderful 101 that he's relatively weak on his own, and has no real moveset potential at all.

2) All of the Wonderful 100 are playable simultaneously, and would basically be bunched together. This would just look weird, as it would be impossible to distinguish between them in a fight, and they'd look like a big colourful mess. Plus, the Wonderful 101 are "regular" people; they're not supposed to be tiny (I know the opposite is true for Olimar, but it doesn't feel as forced with him, as Pikmin games don't have him running around cities and encountering other people).

I'd be perfectly happy with a Wonderful 101 stage, which I think is certainly feasible, and could be awesome as hell. Imagine fighting on one of the bosses as it rampages through cities/oceans/volcanoes/etc. You could even have the Wonderful 101 in the background, doing all kinds of epic shit. I think that would do them far more justice.

So reveal Ridley tomorrow now that everyone isn't expecting it?

Reveal ridley in 3 hours at QA meeting, duh. Nothing will get investors more excited than knowing that ridley will be in smash 4. That means nintendo will hit that 3.8 million expected sales day and date with smash 4 release, all because of ridley.

Chibi-Robo!, Golden Sun, Captain Rainbow, Sin and Punishment, Custom Robo, and the list goes on. The Wonderful 101 isn't unlike any of those games.

Interesting. I wasn't aware that those were all developed by third-parties. Golden Sun is the only one whose developer (Camelot) I'm familiar with, but I thought they were a second-party, especially since they also worked on the Mario Golf and Tennis games.

But I think this just highlights the key difference; Platinum Games are a well-known developer, and as such, it's well-known that they develop games for non-Nintendo systems. So that's where the mistaken notion of Wonderful 101 being third-party is coming from. Again, I still think it's a very easy mistake to make.

I....just saw the PotD.

....I refuse to fall for this troll tactic!!

He still has a chance...no....They have a chance!! Sakurai has a ace up his sleeve. Just watch!
TT-TT

First-party - Nintendo developed, Nintendo published (Mario, Zelda, Animal Crossing, etc.)
Second-party - outside developed, Nintendo published (W101, Custom Robo, Golden Sun, etc.)
Third-party - outside developed, outside published (Metal Gear, Resident Evil, practically everything else)

The Wonderful 101 is a second-party game; it's published by Nintendo, but it isn't developed by them. The same goes for Golden Sun and the others.

nintendo's marketing should be

"DO YOU WANT TO PLAY AS A FUCKING SPACE DRAGON? HELL YEAH YOU DO"

Don't forget Pokemon.
Developed by Game Freak, published by Nintendo

Haha, that would be funny to see someone wait in line to ask

"Is Ridley a boss, a playable character, or both?"

Yep. Kirby and Fire Emblem are also technically second-party, though Wikipedia is insistent that Nintendo owns HAL and Intelligent Systems (which isn't true).

They also say that Nintendo owns 53% of Gamefreak but give no source and that information isn't anywhere but Wikipeida.

Sin and Punishment is a Nintendo IP, and I bet that's not the first time that happened either.

Really though I just wanna encourage more people to play Sin and Punishment.

Why? It was still published and owned by Nintendo, so it's second party.

I agree the distinction is kind of academic, for all intents and purposes it's first party, but it's not exactly difficult to understand...

Second party doesn't mean they're in thrall forever to Ninty. Just that they worked on a project that was owned and published by Ninty.

So I made a chart for items in alphabetical order with the red marker indicating whether an item is new or not. May have made some mistakes. If I did, please point them out.

That is one hell of an item switch screen. Wonder how many more there are, or if that's it. I'm pretty happy with it, so far.

Any glaring omissions from previous games?

So many new items from Mario, Zelda and Kid Icarus in particular, I think they could've shared the wealth a bit more among other series there but I suppose not every game has that many logical item choices that'd fit in.

you're a bad linkhero :<
:(

As long as they have had some history of being on a Nintendo platform, they should be eligible.
CoD Dog Ghost 4 Smash

The day LJN revives and becomes the sole developer of Smash Bros. is the day you regret this statement.

Loving the diversity.

The new Mario items are kinda... questionable, but seeing as Zelda is a game about collecting items I'm mostly surprised we've gone so long with the few we've had.

Mario universe has so many interesting potential items the fact they made that fire block sword kinda annoys me.

People complaining about Smash having too many Pokemon make me laugh. Pokemon is kinda sorta (just a little) important to Nintendo's history, so it having seven reps would be totally justifiable, especially in a roster that will likely be somewhere around 50 characters.

Heck, assuming that the final roster is 48 characters, 7 Pokemon would be the smallest ratio of Pokemon-to-characters that any Smash Bros. game has ever had: 64 had 2/12 (16.7%), Melee had 4/26 (15.4%), Brawl had 6/39 (15.4%) and a hypothetical 7/48 would be 14.6%.

When I checked the Wonder Red Miiverse post, I found that there were at least as many "there's too many Mario and Pokémon characters, Wonderful 101 should replace them" posts as there were "that's a third-party hyuck hyuck hyuck" or "who the heck is that" ones. I understand why this nonsense line of thinking exists, but not why it's as prominent as it is. Sigh...

Man, I really hope we have some DK items beyond the hammer this time. The barrel cannon in Melee was a ton of fun and I'm sure some of the items Cranky/Funky sell you in Retro's games could be put to use in Smash.

also what the hell is a sceptile

I don't think it is out of the question that Kid Icarus would have fair share of new items and most of them are largely different from the items we have had. EDIT: Forgot the main point for Kid Icarus. It is a newly revived franchise, and the newest one compared to everything else in Smash.

Mario's items I think are there due to the recent influx of Mario games having lots of power-ups, so I don't think it is out of the question. Now the Fire Bar is an odd item, but it is unique compared to other sword-like weapons.

Now Zelda's items were long overdue. For a series that's meat and bones are items, it was odd how very little of them have been in Smash.
