Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 7: How Can My Smash Brother Be This Cut

I do wish we could go back in time to '99 and see people's reactions to Pokemon being one of only 2 franchises with more than one rep.

I actually had to go and look up what LJN was. So its a defunct publisher?

To put things in perspective: Their games are featured in about 75% of the Angry Video Game Nerd's reviews.

That is one hell of an item switch screen. Wonder how many more there are, or if that's it. I'm pretty happy with it, so far.

Any glaring omissions from previous games?

The new Mario items are kinda... questionable, but seeing as Zelda is a game about collecting items I'm mostly surprised we've gone so long with the few we've had.
True though there's something I find slightly odd about how some of Link's main tool set is scattered around as standard items, guess you can't really change his core moveset to accommodate most of these other Skyward Sword items in that workable of a way. I'm fully behind Cucco and Bombchu, they should be fun.

What's the purpose behind having the fairy again when we already have maxim tomato and heart containers? I can't recall anything special about the fairy, I'm guessing just another percentage of health which seems sort of pointless.

Mario universe has so many interesting potential items the fact they made that fire block sword kinda annoys me.
It could be redeemed if throwing it causes it to land and just spin as a Fire Bar should on top of its swinging focus.

Man, I really hope we have some DK items beyond the hammer this time. The barrel cannon in Melee was a ton of fun and I'm sure some of the items Cranky/Funky sell you in Retro's games could be put to use in Smash.
My bias is showing again but it bums me out a bit that DK has bugger all going here aside from DK arcade stuff and they removed the one DKC item. Ideally I'd like every main SSB franchise to have at least one item to add to the collection to emphasize that crossover aspect even further.

Not gonna lie; I genuinely thought Wonderful 101 was a third-party game too. And that's from somebody who completed and loved it.

But really; it's an easy mistake to make; it was developed by Platinum Games, a third-party studio. Sure, third-party studios have worked on Nintendo franchises before (such as Sega with F-Zero GX and Capcom with Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages/Seasons, and Minish Cap), but I believe this is the first time a third-party has actively created an IP specifically for Nintendo.

Now I know that Wonderful 101 is a Nintendo property, I don't think Wonder Red would work as a playable character. The obvious comparison to draw is Olimar, but there are key differences. The whole point of the Wonderful 100 is that they merge to form gigantic weapons. That obviously wouldn't translate to Smash Bros. (except as a Final Smash, but still; what do you do for the base moveset?). That problem could be addressed in one of two ways, both of which have their own problems:

1) Wonder-Red fights solo, except when using a Final Smash. Obviously, this would be pretty lame. It's established even within Wonderful 101 that he's relatively weak on his own, and has no real moveset potential at all.

2) All of the Wonderful 100 are playable simultaneously, and would basically be bunched together. This would just look weird, as it would be impossible to distinguish between them in a fight, and they'd look like a big colourful mess. Plus, the Wonderful 101 are "regular" people; they're not supposed to be tiny (I know the opposite is true for Olimar, but it doesn't feel as forced with him, as Pikmin games don't have him running around cities and encountering other people).

I'd be perfectly happy with a Wonderful 101 stage, which I think is certainly feasible, and could be awesome as hell. Imagine fighting on one of the bosses as it rampages through cities/oceans/volcanoes/etc. You could even have the Wonderful 101 in the background, doing all kinds of epic shit. I think that would do them far more justice.

Obviously he's not in so the point is moot. But in my mind each Special attack would be a different morph. And all the regular/tilt/smash/aerial attacks would change for each morph. So hit B and It's Wonder Red with the fist, Smash/aerial attacks would be the fist. Side-B switches to Blue and A attacks are blade, Down-B for Gun and Up-B for Whip. I chose these because these are the 4 biggest characters in the game and it makes sense to me. Probably a little to awkward and gimmicky, but that's how I saw it.

MASSIVE END GAME SPOILERS FOR WONDERFUL 101!
Obvious final Smash:

Little late to this discussion but I just gotta chime in and say 'second party' is such a stupid term and you should all stop using it.

A game is either first or third party.

A studio is either first or third party.

A first party game made by a third party studio (eg Golden Sun, Wonderful 101, Pokemon) is just that, a first party game made by a third party studio. No silly second party term involved.

"Hmm...Charizard is a Fire-Type...Greninja's a Water-Type...we need a Grass-Type to complete the triangle...I got it!
We'll add Solar Beam to Jigglypuff's moveset! porbelm solevd
"

They will complete the triangle in the next Smash iteration when Game Freak has hopefully designed an actual cool bipedal grass starter.

lol oh you

Yeah. I don't think they actually developed the terrible games they published.

Here's one of my favorite games by them. No Joke. I actually like this game haha
Punch-Out? Must be a good game. Jason4Smash, he'll be Little Mac's rival.

Late, but it's really not surprising Wonder Red isn't playable.

If anything, him being a trophy should be considered an achievement.

Which is why I think they have a chance. We didn't even know if Sakurai was going to acknowledge them. Not only did he, he says they modeled others as well. And everyone saying because he shows a trophy that means it's nothing. Maybe he's aware of this pattern as well?

The Wonderful 100 would be an awesome addition to Smash and suit the game perfectly.

Like not even kind of.

Hell, even with the last few years, Nintendo published two JRPGs it owns the rights to (Pandora's Tower, which I guess is more of an action game, and The Last Story) and other things like Flingsmash (Artoon). Nevermind the Cing-developed stuff like Another Code/R and Last Window (Hotel Dusk). Chibi-Robo was created by Skip, as well. Plus there's stuff like Sin & Punishment, Ouendan/Elite Beat Agents, Electroplankton, Starfy (though TOSE owns half that IP), Glory of Heracles, Golden Sun, etc.

Nintendo tends to work with smaller studios, like Inis, Treasure, Paon, etc. Platinum is one of those smaller studios. They're an incredibly talented smaller studio, but it's not that different at all.

Hmm...

Your fault for not having superior isa jo at the top

Lack of sales and marketing reach aside, W101 was pushed as a much bigger game than the smaller JRPGs, as a major title to go along with the first-party lineup. It isn't really comparable.

The only grass starter that's really cool is Torterra imo (perhaps my favorite of them all), but he wouldn't work in Smash unfortunately. Imagine him jumping.

Wow, that's really it? Crazy how much stuff we got from the Direct.

Fan and red shell are pretty sure I think. Hopefully Cracker Launcher and Barrel Cannon make it back.

If he were to add Grovyle Smash 4 would instantly be the best game ever made.

Too bad it won't happen though!

Kinda funny people are thinking Sceptile has a chance nowbecause a game was announced, like the roster is pretty much set in stone now, I don't think theres a chance of Sakurai is going to add the hot new hyrule warriors character or the all new X protagonist besides future DLC.

I never understood why people thought Wonderful 101 was owned by Platinum

Platinum (Clover) worked with Capcom - Viewtiful Joe, Okami, and God Hand are all owned by Capcom.

Platinum worked with Sega - Bayonetta, Vanquish, Infinite Space, Anarchy Reigns and Mad World are all owned by Sega.

Platinum works with Nintendo - Wonderful 101 is owned by...?

So I made a chart for items in alphabetical order with the red marker indicating whether an item is new or not. May have made some mistakes. If I did, please point them out.

What is this gale item? Also why did they bring back that whack Lip's Stick? Smoke bomb was annoying too. The fan has to make it back though and the cracker launcher.

I would very much miss the fan and party ball, but not much else.

I still stand by the fact that this screenshot has the new version of the party ball.

It's between zelda and luma. It could also be the chest, but I am pretty confident it's the party ball.

Super Smash NFC baby

let's do it

The fact that they're making an NFC dongle for 3ds tells me smash is the lead game for the nfc figures.
Ideally you get 1 figure and it's used on all of nintendo's upcoming games, including smash, and it just saves character respective data for each game. Custom movesets for smash, for example. Other games can use them for save data or profile info (control schemes, win records, unlockables, etc). A gimmick that would have been resolved by a memory card, but it's a super cool looking memory card!

Hopefully there is more to it than that.

...it's the bottom of Zelda's dress illuminated by the luma's light.

The lighting is throwing you off, it's just the frills on Zelda dress.

Nintendo has been developing an NFC reader/writer for the Nintendo 3DS family, as you can see on this slide,
and we are planning to launch it in the first half of the next calendar year. This will make Nintendo 3DS
compatible with the NFC reader/writer via infrared communication, and as a result, you will be able to read
and write NFC data with the Nintendo 3DS device in the palm of your hand.

That is to say, NFP is going to be compatible with Wii U software from this year-end, and compatible with both Wii U
and Nintendo 3DS software from next year.

Unless they don't want the connectivity feature to work at SSB4 Wii U's launch, it wouldn't make sense to wait till some time in 2015 for the connectivity feature to be possible.

EDIT: So I'm basically saying no to NFC being required for whatever they have planned in terms of connectivity.

Both games only launch with Mario, Link, Pikachu and Kirby playable, the only way to unlock more is to buy NFC figures. This is how they keep the rest of the roster secret between the 3DS and Wii U releases.
