I just saw it last night and I thought it was really good. Although I say you definitely should see this with someone(family, friends, significant other). The visuals at times were visually an overload for me but that was the whole point. It's like they were able to get that cartoon like in real life without it looking weird and out of place. I was a bit worried though a friend of mine said it was horrible. Not a movie for everyone though.. If your looking for something entertaining and just fun watch it. I hope someone asks me to see this movie again! :lol

I think I am going to try and catch the IMAX version if I can get away for a few more hours.

It looks like it will underperform domestically, but should do really well overseas and on Blu Ray/DVD.

It will make money and will be a cult favorite.
It wont make money. Based on how its tracking it wont make anymore than 60 million in America and its budget+marketing top 180 million. Thats quite in the red. It could be saved by overseas but other than Japan who really knows of Speed Racer?

More like a PG-rated color-splashed version of Sin City. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory tried to re-capitalize an already superior original. You don't mess with greatness:

To be fair, CatCF was a different interpretation.

Really, really enjoyed it and anyone who knows my posting history knows I'm not really a fan of The Wachowski Bros. or anything that's drawn in foreign countries (I'm xenophobic). It was a bit too long, and has some flaws, but it's immensely enjoyable and visually exciting.

I appreciate for a family movie that not every single character was completely one-dimensional, nor did it talk down to its audience. It's a family movie through and through, definitely with some schmaltz, but it's one of the better family movies I've seen in years.

I expect it to be polarizing to audiences and to do poorly commercially. I am kind of surprised how many people here are rooting for its failure. This community has a long tradition of hyping hollow, visually exciting movies that border on bad (anyone remember this place single-handedly making Equilibrium a cult movie?). And considering this one actually has a heart and terrific action sequences, I would think this place would be on it like Larry Wachowski on a Victoria's Secret sale.

People on this forum are still not finished sucking ironman's dong.

Well apparently there is a Korean pop star Rain in it, which seems to make people think it will help it do really well in Asia, not just Japan. Plus I think Europe will eat it up too.

With the type of word of mouth it is getting from the people who loved it, and the obvious attraction of Hot Wheels loving boys, I actually would be surprised if it did not break 100 million domestically by the end of the run.

Er...with a 22-23 million dollar opening weekend? That kind of math is impossible. That would be like a near 5x multiplier which is unheard of, even for movies with strong legs. Especially with extremely heavy competition. Narnia next week (expected to open with over 75 million) and Indiana Jones the next week (expected to open with 100 million).

It's in a extremely crowded month with a very weak opening weekend, I cant see how it can gain legs.

It's best hope is 70 million, MAYBE 75. the 60's is the most probable outcome.

What's with all the food/sugar/candy references?

While Hollywood slapped 'PG' on Speed Racer to line its pocketbooks with the widest hodgepodge of people (ahem: kids), those same kids will leave the theater with that lollipop nearly sucked to the stick but then yanked away with confusion.
The actors seem lost in a gumball dispenser; the audience, for the most part, might well feel the same way
This toxic admixture of computer-generated frenzy and live-action torpor succeeds in being, almost simultaneously, genuinely painful -- the esthetic equivalent of needles in eyeballs -- and weirdly benumbing, like eye candy laced with lidocaine.
An uncompelling and grotesquely overlong piece of eye candy geared only to a fourth-grader’s world view.
Sugar, not petrol, is the fuel that comes to mind watching candy-hued, visually hyperactive, narratively sputtering Speed Racer.
The movie demands you be a glutton for sensation and then has the nerve to ask why you're not hungrier.
Unless you have an incredibly low threshold for kid/chimp comedy, a sense of fun is what's missing in Speed Racer and that should have been the first ingredient.
You'll be overwhelmed by the film's visual style (Think Willy Wonka making a movie out of Skittles) but it's only a simple treat without any of the heartier substance of a full cinematic meal.

Group-think?

And lol at:

Were Larry and Andy Wachowski just really, really lucky when they made The Matrix?

Must have been a fuckton of luck when they made V for Vendetta, too.

I think it will perform similar to the Spy Kids movies. Have those type of legs. At least I hope. It would be sad to think the the awful Fantastic Four movies could gross so much more than a truly fun and well put together summer movie like Speed.

I think Prince Caspian will under perform, not a Summer movie, but Indy will of course steal the box office in a couple weeks.

*shrug* I saw it last night and I loved it. I know I'm in the minority, but I liked it better than Iron Man (and I liked Iron Man). But then again I like the Matrix sequels better than the originals and I'm a huge fan of the Wachowskis in general. Personally, I had a stupid grin on my face for most of the movie...it was unlike anything I have ever seen before.

People will always be pissed at the brothers for not making the Matrix sequels they way they thought they should be made so I kind of expect all of their movies henceforth to be bombarded with lots of irrational hate. But that said, I can also understand why most people won't like this movie...it's an absolute assault on the senses and it the characters and story don't exactly have much depth to them. It's a popcorn movie, plain and simple.

Also, the action in this movie was awesome, as expected. The fight scene on the mountain is one of the best scenes in any movie, period...haters be damned.

Well hey, I liked it, screw the haters. I remember when I watched Speed Racer as a kid and laughed at it's silliness (jumping cars and all, cheesy dialogues and plotlines, and the re-introduction of Racer X at every episode :lol ) and this movie has everything I expected from a Speed Racer cartoon.

So yeah, it's a very small target audience. My friends, except the geeky ones, refuse to watch this simply because of its "kiddy and colorful world". Which was awesome to me. And how can I not like the fight scenes? :lol

Edit : but none of my friends seem to recognize the "chyok chyok" jumping sound.

Speed Racer is a perfect example of style over substance and the little substance that is there is fanservice. Alot o people will hate but as someone who loved the Anime it was fun.

My micro review:

Pros:
- Eye popping special effects that don't disappoint
- Good pacing and energetic
- Intense racing/battling
- Likable characters
- Several genuinely funny moments
- Christina Ricci is hot, especially in a night gown
- Spridle and ChimChim are more fun than annoying(1)
- RacerX is well portrayed

1) This is a mixed bag. Most of the time you'll chuckle while others you just want them to shut up and calm down.

Cons:
- Too kid friendly*
- Simplistic and obvious plot
- Never really takes itself seriously
- Over the top editing gets ludicrous**

* There is no danger in this world. Ninjas fight like the Three Stooges; occupants of deadly car crashes always saved and guns always miss. Also, the slapstick and corny character behavior will have adult viewers cringing.

** Try counting how many times a character's face swooshes by in a wipe. I don't think I can count that high. The editing is more obnoxious than the original HULK movie.

A day later, I was glad I went and I might even consider seeing it a second time. If you go, expect a movie that doesn't take itself seriously and you'll probably have a good time.

So people want this movie to do badly just cause they liked Iron Man? What does one have to do with the other? Sheesh.

I saw a late showing of Speed Racer last night to a barely half-filled theater but everyone there seemed to be in the mood for it and was having a good old time, myself included. It was light, quick, and had obvious doses of heart and charm. Obviously it's visually stunning, and I think lots of people were caught off guard by just how incredible some of the non-trailer key scenes looked.

It's quite clear it's not for everyone, but it's not the medicore celluloid these reviews I've skimmed make it out to be. I am actually shocked that reviewers at least aren't giving it the "take your kids to see it and have fun" treatement in the wake of every shoddy Pixar-wannabe cartoon CGI schlock-fest that they let slide. It could have totally been a huge boon if they had targeted that aspect of the public in some capacity. Instead, it seems like it's attracting older audiences who grew up with it or half-bored teens who have already theater-hopped from a paid seat of Iron Man.

All I know is, I was happy walking out of there and the world looked a lot duller and slower on the way home.

And therein lies the problem :( My wife liked the movie but also said it was "too bright and kiddy". I guess everyone wants their movies to look like the drab UE3 games they play.

I loved this. Seriously, everytime a character's head passed by I grinned like a motherfucker.

The Spy Kids movies that did well did a lot better than 22 million opening weekends though to be fair. ;)

They all made over 100 million and opened 26-36 million, right were Speed should open.

Yeah, I saw Forgetting Sarah Marshall on Wednesday. I wish I hadn't watched the trailer so many times. Was kinda like..ugh...this joke again?

No. People want it to fail because it's an overpriced, cheesy throwback to a series that most people would have rather forgotten.

It's also made by the people who single-handedly created and destroyed The Matrix so you have that angle of hatred to deal with as well.

It's going to... really suck. But because nerds have no taste and will line up like lemmings for anything that jerks off their nostalgia addled tastes, it will make lots of money and more shitty movies will be made from licensed products that don't deserve to be resurrected as bad cartoons, much less movies.

How's that?

some choice bits from the filmspotting review:

adam's thoughts:
- "mind numbing, and not any fun, especially the parts when the characters sit around talking about the purity of their sport, and what they're doing, the fight against succumbing to corporate greed, all in a movie that cost 125 million dollars to make and which goes out of its way to frame shots to make sure a motorola logo on a walkie talkie framed front and center"

- "the only thing that worked here is christina ricci."

- "i thought this was a complete waste of time."

- "maybe eight year olds will like this film. i did not. . .i couldn't wait for this movie to get over. "

matty's thoughts:
- "all the things i found lacking in last week's iron man i found here. there is perhaps an excess of plot, but i'll always respect a movie that is willing to challenge its audience. . . speed is battling the evils of corporate scholarship. . . practically a treatise on the corruption of modern major league baseball."

- "the action scenes are like watching a japanese pinball machine through a kaleidoscope on three drops of mescaline. like a skittles induced stroke."

- "the battles outside the arena much more fun."

- "i really, really liked this film."

Cheebs said:
speed is going to open nowhere near 36 million.

But it will be close to 26, which is what the original Spy Kids opened at, which was my point.

You are probably right and it won't do as well as it deserves IMO, but most who have seen it seem to be praising it more than the reviews would suggest of its quality.

HAHA. Totally split.:lol

i know. the consensus seemed to be that it would be good, stupid fun for kids. it seems expectations will dictate whether you enjoy it or not.

What were they thinking? They could have made any movie in the world after V for Vendetta and The Matrix Trilogy and they chose to make a movie based off of a cheesy, forgettable, niche show. There is no creativity at work with those two. The Matrix borrows heavily from Dark City and especially Ghost in the Shell. Throw some Philosophy 101 and bullet time in the mix and you have the Matrix trilogy. Then there's V for Vendetta that was based off of a graphic novel. Then there's this movie, like I said earlier, that is based off of a crappy cartoon.

I thought this movie would suck, but the 7 minute opening video has me rethinking that. It actually looks like a proper live action cartoon of sorts, and some scenes have really nice sense of cartoony exhilaration.

Still not going to see it in a theatre as the colors looked like complete crap when I saw the trailer in theater compared to what I see on my TV. I guess I'll wait for BRD and rent it.

i wasn't totally psyched about going, then my roommate showed me the first few minutes of the film, and like, i still wasn't psyched.

....but then i walked out dazzled...maybe it was the 70 foot imax screen that did it for me?

Sucks for those of us who go to movies expecting to see a good movie.

oh, i have no desire to see it. i just thought the filmspotting review was funny.

i'm not sure why you care that it's going to suck so badly, though. plenty of movies are offensively bad all the time.

Just see it in digital. I actually drove out of my way to make sure I saw this movie in digital. You won't be disappointed.

I don't mind that it's going to suck. What bothers me is that people will overlook or be blind to the suckiness because the movie will tickle their nerd prostate. I mean, I'll be the first person to admit that any fantasy movie I see I'm predisposed to like, but if it sucks as a MOVIE I'm not going to like it.

yeah, i feel that. sometimes you've just gotta turn your head (insert prostate-related ". . . and cough" joke) if it's not your thing. if a much more deserving movie gets trounced by it at the b.o. i'll be the first to fly off the handle though.

I didn't even really like the original cartoon so there's no nostalgia or geekiness going on with how much I liked the movie. I just thought it was solid. I'm not saying that your point won't apply to some people who liked it, but I went in with no expectations and not really much knowledge of the cartoon, and I thought it was awesome.

I'm on the same wagon as brandonh here: the piece is solid as both a geekasm and a film.

EDIT: Friday box office numbers are in. Speed Racer did HORRIBLE.

1. Iron Man (Paramount) – $14.75M - $3,588 PTA - $141.38M cume
2. NEW – Speed Racer (Warner Bros) - $6.5M - $1,803 PTA - $6.5M cume

Fucking awesome! I was hoping the empty theatre i saw it in meant something and it did! :D

Triumph - As a film it's absolute garbage. If you took out all the dialogue, every time you see a character outside of a racecar, and killed the monkey, there might be a half hour of a well scored(if generic) action movie.

He doesn't appear to have the cover of a comic book for an avatar, and his name used to be President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho

I never expected this movie to do well. My first reaction to seeing a poster for it after seeing Cloverfield was "what the hell, they're making a Speed Racer movie?!" and imo it looked sorta crappy.

All the comments about the colours make me wanna see it for myself though!

Unfortunately the movie doesn't have Christian Bale or Robert Downey Jr. playing Racer X, if it did, GAF would simultaneously wack off to the movies excellence.

I saw this and was blown the motherfuck away. You've never seen anything like this movie, ever.

Guaranteed.
