Because the last F-Zero game was a decade ago, and there is no sign that a new game is on the horizon. Plus, Sakurai is probably sick and tired of people bitching about Ganondorf being a clone, so cutting Capt would be a good way to get rid of that problem without having to actually make a new moveset for 'Dorf. I mean, I seriously don't think it'll happen, but I could see it happen.
This is hard to believe considering they didn't react anywhere near that loudly for any of the other vets.

Ugh, let's not even joke about that. I'm really, deeply hoping Zero won't be in this game at all. If he has to be, though, then I hope it's just as a trophy.
I have faith in Sakurai, though. He's already shown he knows what's really important where Mega Man is concerned by having only the various Mega Men (and not Zero) appear in Mega Man's Final Smash.
Capcom already has a hard-on for Zero over Mega Man. That's enough. Doesn't need to bleed into Smash as well. Mega Man deserves to be here because of his legacy with Nintendo and old-school gaming in general. Zero... not so much.

Pic of the day. Uniting three parts will complete the legendary Air Ride machine the Dragoon! It's back! But we didn't just leave it the way it was, and added some nice touches to the design of the targeting screen. It is, of course, in stereoscopic 3D on the 3DS.
