I don't own a Vita, but that looks just like the control scheme I use on PC with my Dual Shock 3. Pretty cool.

Yep, same scheme I use with my X360 pad. Only PC/PS4/PSV versions announced, I wouldn't expect a PS3 version.

I probably will, eventually, just not for this game, since local co-op is one of the features I'm most excited about. ;)

I suppose it could work if you held the Vita vertically and had each player on their end of the device, using the face buttons and the analogue sticks to control Isaac. Far from ideal, though! :p

he already confirmed that the vita version won't have co op.

In slightly different news, those who can't wait for rebirth to come and want to play something different but still very isaac like should look at the new indiegamestand deal Brandon Must Die!. I had never heard of the game before the deal and just played it for a bit... and while it does feel like an inferior version of isaac (it's still in beta in its defense) it still feels like a different version of isaac which is a nice little distraction while I wait for rebirth. Figured you guys might want to know about it in case you are in the same boat as I am... love the binding of isaac, but finding it hard to play it anymore knowing how much new awesomeness is coming with rebirth ><:

Picking up where we left off…
as some of you know ive been hiding things in each post and i think its time we talked about, new rebirth pickup items.
now, pickup items count as anything that spawns via a room or chest, hearts, keys, bombs, cards and pills. rebirth will of course feature all the previous pickups, but also add quite a few new ones to the mix (and extend the ever growing list of cards and pills).
here are a few new additions.

Black Heart: the dark alt to the eternal heart, the black heart acts like a soul heart but damages all enemies in the room when its depleted. this heart fits nicely into all the new demon forms.. and lets just say a new character may or may not come loaded with a few.
Lil Battery: some of you noticed this “item” in tyrones beta shop tease. and a few of you actually guessed exactly what it was. the lil battery is a new rare pickup item that only appears if you are holding a usable item, recharging it fully… who likes breaking the game!? (this ones for you!)
Key Ring: 2 keys… but actually part of something else…
Bomb Rock: not a pickup item, but something you guys have noticed in screen shots and keep asking about.. its just an explosive rock!!
and since this post isnt as exciting as the previous i thought id spice it up by showing a few item combos people have requested after i did the post about The Ludovico Technique…

every shop should have one!

in rebirth my one plan of attack, design wise, was to fix the shops. i wanted them to feel more like i originally intended, i want the shop to feel like a means of support, i want it to feature support items that may help curve your run in a specific direction or simply give you more options. in order to do this i approached shops in a few new ways.

1st, the shop now features a very specific pool of “support items” or shop items. some of these items were part of the pool in the flash version (battery, 9volt, habit, ladder, map, compass and moms purse). this pool has been greatly expanded with more “build specific” items that support stuff like familiars, npcs (flies/spiders), cards/pills and many more.

shops will also feature new pickup items like the lil battery and also feature high price items that you just cant live without!

and finally shops will now feature donation machines!

one of the more common questions i get asked about isaacs design is why didnt i go with a traditional leveling system. well i kinda hate grinding and the isaac system was my answer to it, technically you level up each level by gaining an ability in the treasure room and a stat boost in the boss room and optional support items from the shop.

but what if i played around with an optional progressive leveling system in isaac.. where you make donations to the store to “expand” and upgrade them visually ala animal crossing… what if i staggered out tons of unlockable content via donations that raised the % of the number of items in the store and also unlocked some seriously amazing items?!

and what if i let you put in your credit card info to unlock it all from the start of the game!?!!!

that would make me an abusive, greedy, incompetent asshole…. so we wont add the last part.

but seriously save your credit card for the store… (only the rebirth devs will get this joke, but youll get it too eventually…)

i know its kinda logical that you will be seeing spoilers on a dev blog.. but i thought id put spoiler alert on this one simply due to the fact that some people might not want to know about one of the new playable characters in isaac..
anyway, meet Eden.

Eden will be the one and only character ill be officially spoiling on the dev blog and one of a few new playable characters you will be unlocking in rebirth.
im spoiling Eden, because they have been spoiled in the past. Eden is the fabled “mystery man” ive talked about in interviews before i had a fully realized idea of what they would become… see Eden isnt a man, nor are they a woman.. they just are.
Eden is a completely randomly generated playable character.
the most requested thing in isaac was the ability to play with a character with random starting items, and it was something i always wanted to do.. so here is how Eden works.
once you unlock Eden, you will have to earn “mom kill points” to play as them (this makes it so you can just randomly reroll into a build you want and makes Eden more of a risk to play with)
when you start the game as Eden, everything is randomized accordingly.
-all stats are randomized evenly (including hp) making sure not to ever set any stat so low that they becomes unplayable.
-the player is given 1 random pickup item (coin, bomb, key, pill or card)
-the player is given 2 starting items at random from the current pool of unlocked items in the game (avoiding 2 usable items)
-the player is given 1 of many of Edens white hair styles.. and the game starts.
like all characters in the game Eden will unlock a full set of items that pertain to their play style when you defeat any of the set “final bosses”.
Eden is badass… i think everyone will love/hate using them, and the rewards for completing the game with Eden are so worth the effort.

Taste the Sodden Hollow!
So ive mentioned in the past how music in rebirth would have more depth than the previous soundtrack, i wanted it to complement the living environments and also adapt to what was happening in game.. well the latter is something we are currently playing around with, i call adaptive layering.
here’s a good example of it using the 1st spoiled track “Diptera Sonata”, the 1st 50 seconds shows the track as youd normally hear it, the 2nd half shows an adaptive layer that comes in when there are lots of enemies on screen with you, usually in larger or extra large rooms.

You didn't link the new Caves track, Sodden Hollow.

Not sure about it, but I came around on Diptera Sonata, it does fit caves really well.

I really like Danny B's soundtrack, but I think I'm going to like this one a lot too.
 
I'm betting on the 6 month being the one. This damn thing was originally supposed to come out in "early 2014".

Pretty sure there was an earlier estimate than that originally.

The game is being developed by Nicalis, who were behind the Cave Story+ update, and is planned for release on Steam (and those console things) towards the end of 2013.

I just hope it has a simultaneous release among all regions unlike 1001 spikes. I don't know if I can take other people playing this on their Vita when I don't have access to it.

Until the variety of European ratings systems changes to accommodate the needs of smaller developers interested in self-publishing, a lot of these indie games are still going to struggle with this. Some will get through the process faster than others (and yes, Nicalis has a history of really bombing this process), but it's a hurdle a lot of them have been speaking out about.

It's a ratings problem? I figured it was a Sony problem. 1001 spikes is on Steam for me right now, came out last week. Still waiting on the PS release though. At least if the same thing happens with BoI I can get my fix with Steam, but I really want it on my Vita.

Sony and Nintendo. No ratings are needed for Steam. I fully expect the same for BoI so I'll probably get it on Steam and then maybe Vita later.

Well, it's a Sony problem in that they require the game to be rated, but then that's a Nintendo and Microsoft problem too.

But yes, it's primarily a problem with the rating system over there being expensive and they don't differentiate their process, Nicalis has to go through the same process and pay the same fees EA does or something like that. I know very recently some of the larger indie game developer's groups were rallying PEGI, et al. to modernize their systems similar to what ESRB did for digital games a few years ago.

Its time to show off a new rebirth boss! well officially and in motion anyway. we kinda teased this guy a bit ago, but now you get to see him in action.. meet the Dingle!

i love this lil guy, he is still a work in progress but far enough to tease him a bit. Dingle is one of a few new “poop type” enemies in the game, as you can see he whistles out a little guy to fight along side him, that’s a “squirt”.

once upon a time he was called the “pooper”.. but Dingle is such a better name.

Currently an early version of Rebirth is playable at E3… we are also showing off co-op there. for those of you who cant make it out, next week ill go into great detail on what co-op actually means for rebirth and what you can expect (spoiler: its awesome).

Since I don't see it anywhere posted. Latest Rebirth update:

its time to talk about size!

ive said many times that rebirth will be much larger than the original + the expansion were, put together, but i thought it might be time to talk more in depth about exactly how.

so 1st off the base game + wrath of the lamb boasted 198 items, currently rebirth features well over 450 items, not to mention a lot more common item pick ups like the lil battery, black heart, new card types and a lot of double items like the key ring.

Rebirth will also feature over 50 new enemies (not counting bosses) and will also include the addition of color specific champion variations that each will have their own new way of killing you.

Rebirth will feature 15+ new bosses, but a new (and very fun) addition to these bosses are the &#8220;double trouble&#8221; boss fights, kind of like a curse for the boss rooms that forces you to fight 2 previous chapter bosses at once in a larger sized room.

But my personal favorite HUGE addition to rebirth is the number of new rooms and the control i now have over each one.

for those that dont know, isaacs levels are composed of randomly selected rooms placed in a map that forms a logical and completable floor. each of these rooms that can be placed into a floor i design in a level editor.

the old game featured 150 rooms per chapter (basement, caves, depths, etc)&#8230; but Rebirth will boast well over 500 rooms per chapter (counting large rooms as 1 room).

this huge addition of levels makes things a lot more fun and interesting to play, on top of all the new rooms the new level editor allows me to do a lot of stuff i wasnt able to do before. i can now design rooms where doors are turned off, this makes it so i can create more dramatic and cool looking areas.

rooms now also feature a rarity slider, so i can design a room that is as rare to generate as the error room is to find&#8230; but on top of all of this im also now able to make anything in the room have a more rare alt to it. a good example being this room, there is a very small chance those metal bricks turn into rocks so the black heart becomes accessible..

these aspects might seem minor, but they allow for a seemingly endless game, to REALLY appear endless&#8230; you can only remember so many room layouts :)

finally, rebirth will also feature 5 new special room types (like the arcade, sac room, devil room, etc) i wont be spoiling any of these so you can figure them out yourselves.. but they are all quite cool and im looking forward to reading about what you think the hidden purpose of each is&#8230;

Edmund teases Rebirth's release in his blog. Between 2-6 months.

My guess is 4 months.

In addition to that, Edmund now said, that we "will play the game and see the trailer before xmas!" in one of his latest blog-updates.

The wait is killing me guys, especially after this update. :(
 
I did not need to see this thread immediately following a super fun successful FTL run. now it's going to be the only thing on my mind.
 
Dammit, I want a release date. My two most anticipated games this year are TitS SC and this, and I'm starting to have doubts either will release in 2014.
