Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 7: How Can My Smash Brother Be This Cut

If there are any secret characters, I doubt they'd get trailers. The point of the trailer is to surprise/hype us up for a new character, right? That only works before a character is playable; once the character is unlocked, we won't need a trailer, because we'll actually be able to play as the character.

That said, I'm betting all the newcomers will be revealed before the release. It seems like the best way for Nintendo to get everyone hyped for Smash is to reveal each newcomer publicly before the game comes out. If Sakurai left some of them secret, those who discovered them on the 3DS would be super excited, but the people who forgo the 3DS version and wait for the Wii U would only hear about them secondhand. Much less exciting than seeing a shiny new trailer.
I am seriously considering the idea that, after the 3DS version is out, Sakurai might leave a few characters locked by date. Then, we will get PotD or ND updates revealing a new character for the Wii U version, and at the same time, you get a SpotPass notice on the 3DS that says: "A new character has been unlocked!" That way people can still speculate for more playable characters while playing Smash 3DS but before Smash Wii U is out.

Shulk - Shulk and a team of Nintendo characters are standing on a grassy field, facing off against a giant mecha R.O.B. looming in the background. (Drawn in the Xenoblade art style.)
This is awesome. Must happen.

Similar prediction, I think Pac-Man's reveal trailer will begin with a Luigi's Mansion fake-out.

Regarding Pokémon, let’s take a look at roster representation in previous games:

SSB - 2/12 (16.66%)
Melee - 4/26 (15.38%)
Brawl - 6/39 (15.38%)

16% of a potential 48-50 character roster would be 7-8 Pokémon characters.

I'm absolutely certain that Jigglypuff and Mewtwo will both be playable. There's no doubt in my mind about that. I also think it's possible (though not very likely) that Sakurai might revisit Plusle & Minun, though that rests solely on how long ago he found out about Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire.

My fingers are crossed, but my inbox is empty.
Oh my. I love the commentary you and D1 do. It is great.

Also, the profressionalism you guys have and looking out for the community is also great.
Less than a month to go, and it looks like no one knows anything =(

Or, alternatively... they're getting an announcer that isn't Prog for the Smash 4 tournament =(
I'm betting they're gonna try to keep the info about this close to the event so that people will know about who is going to be a part of it at around the same time as the people that are going to participate.

Would keep it as a surprise for pretty much everyone.

Believing hard lol.

They said they are going to reveal details in a "webcast" so I imagine we will find out in a week or two. At least before May ends.

We're 4 weeks away and know next to nothing about the tourney. I'm starting to get worried. Either the people who were invited are being really secretive, or nintendo is cutting it pretty close. OR it's all just a sham, and it's a nintendo employee tournament with the announcer from last year's stage demo :( This guy :(

The Mario vs. Mega Man guy from last year will be commentating the tournament. You've all been warned.

way to post my thoughts seconds before i did! :(

yeah, unless they have a non disclosure for talking about going to the tourney I think this tourney is press only :p

Geoff god will win

Then it's a bit misleading to say 'highly skilled smash brothers players' if it's just members of the press. It implies that these are people who have played the game competitively or know the games very well. I doubt most members of the press have played a smash brothers since they had their website review brawl.

"skilled Smash players journalists"

Once you fire your Hyper Beam, it takes a full turn before you can use it again. In this case, the turn is about 2 months long.
I need to be there when it fires again.

I'M COMING, E3!!!!

highly skilled smash players invited to the event include reggie's son, sakurai's cat, and triforce

Did you honestly believe they would invite pro smash players to play in the tournament? They want a free for all 2 minute stock battles with items with reasonably skilled video game players.

That is the hope, yes. It would be really good publicity. You'd gain viewers you otherwise wouldn't get, and get them interested in the idea of a 'competitive smash brothers', which might get a few more wii U sales. 'highly skilled video game players' is still better than some other alternatives, like journalists.

It *IS* invitation only, so clearly they must know who they're inviting, so it won't be people that are unknown.

But the number of Pokemon in Smash is honestly fine considering how popular the series is.

Especially since the game is now on a handheld. A handheld where Pokemon is the best selling title. They NEED the 3DS to be relevant right now attaching Pokemon to it seems like an obvious choice. Sometimes I wonder why I was surprised that they included Greninja.

That just means that they're not looking for people to apply. Bet they just go around asking some journalist that cover Nintendo games to participate + some minor celebrities and Nintendo employees.

This guy knows the score. This is exactly what's happening.

@Georly

I want to know if Donkey Kong has a mid air down special. He never had one in the first 3 games and in the pic of the day he looks to have a new animation of a downward hand slap. Though it could be a brand new animation for his down throw.

Not to say that nintendo isn't a pro at disappointment, but it would be really disappointing if that's all they meant by 'highly skilled' smash bros players :/

I'm just keeping my expectations in check with a bit of realism. They want to show of smash in a more or less controlled environment and with a slow to medium pace to not overwhelm audiences. Letting pro's have a go at it, potentially exploiting some tactics people don't know the counter for yet could also lead to some negative impressions.

I'm sure grabbing random posts from 2007 or whatever seemed like a good idea to you, but as it happens, I still post here. I no longer think Pokemon is a problem for Nintendo because the company has much bigger problems.

It wasn't anything meant against you, I was just using the posts to illustrate how much things have changed over the years.

1 vs 1 would be zzzzzzzz

items on
4 player free for all
any stage

B^) do it Nintendo

This is almost certainly going to be what happens, as Nintendo will probably want to show off as much of the game as possible, and that includes stages, items, Final Smashes, etc. Still, if they do bring in real competitive Smash players and use this format, there'll be a hell of a backlash.

I don't doubt the tourney will be set up like that. I think it's a perfectly good compromise to have pro players playing on uneven, unbalanced fields. Keeps it exciting, makes the results a bit random (albeit somewhat unfair), but definitely more entertaining for the masses.

WAYYYYYY better than the opposite of newbies playing 1v1 final destination no items.

this part has never made sense
(unless the version they're playing on is actually bugged and literally freezes lol)

This seems like the most sensible way to do it. Nintendo's marketing this game to a general audience, not just to the competitive scene. I can see them inviting pro Smash players, but I wouldn't expect to see competitive-style matches.

I think the worry is that if the game looks too face-paced and technical, it'll scare off casuals/people who have never played Smash before. Nintendo will want to present it as a fun, pick-up-and-play party game.

which does not make sense, given that this group of people presumably won't care much about the gameplay and just want to see the new characters/features/whatever (and also this game isn't going to pick up many people who haven't played Smash before, but this is a separate topic)

I could see some super cheap move/tactic being discovered, and, since a competitive player would probably be playing to win, they'd abuse it. If their opponents can't adapt, a bunch of casual (scrub) viewers would probably complain about "spamming" or something.

But hopefully they actually do have a bunch of skilled players that will actually be able to adapt and fight against that sort of thing.

I still kinda hold out hope for the tournament. We've seen their idea of competition, in 'For Glory' mode. I'd rather them go overboard in that direction, rather than combine 4-for-alls and competition.

Why do a tournament at all then? By that logic Nintendo are already working against themselves.

I hear this idea brought up a lot, but I've never really been able to relate too it. I can understand the very casual players that avoid video games in general because they're hard. But the audience for Smash Bros. is primarily people that enjoy video games, considering it's basically a homage to every Nintendo game they can squeeze in. Seeing a fast, flashy technical game would excite most video game players. It's only when they get the controller in their hands that they would realize how difficult it is and get discouraged. But that assumes that Smash 4 is fast paced though, which I don't think will really be the case.

yeah it kinda defeats the purpose of having a tournament with "highly skilled players" if they're going to do free for alls with items on, on any stage. Might as well just call it a Smash Bros exhibition with Bill Trinen and the rest of Treehouse.

Then again, Nintendo ran a tournament at Gamestop around Brawl's launch with those exact rules, so you never know with these guys...
