But the number of Pokemon in Smash is honestly fine considering how popular the series is.
Yep. I agreed. 6 pokemon would be so perfect for numbers.

I am seriously considering the idea that, after the 3DS version is out, Sakurai might leave a few characters locked by date. Then, we will get PotD or ND updates revealing a new character for the Wii U version, and at the same time, you get a SpotPass notice on the 3DS that says: "A new character has been unlocked!" That way people can still speculate for more playable characters while playing Smash 3DS but before Smash Wii U is out.If there are any secret characters, I doubt they'd get trailers. The point of the trailer is to surprise/hype us up for a new character, right? That only works before a character is playable; once the character is unlocked, we won't need a trailer, because we'll actually be able to play as the character.
That said, I'm betting all the newcomers will be revealed before the release. It seems like the best way for Nintendo to get everyone hyped for Smash is to reveal each newcomer publicly before the game comes out. If Sakurai left some of them secret, those who discovered them on the 3DS would be super excited, but the people who forgo the 3DS version and wait for the Wii U would only hear about them secondhand. Much less exciting than seeing a shiny new trailer.
This is awesome. Must happen.Shulk - Shulk and a team of Nintendo characters are standing on a grassy field, facing off against a giant mecha R.O.B. looming in the background. (Drawn in the Xenoblade art style.)

I am an Immortal Demonic Robot Fairy. I cede authority to no one.
Less than a month to go, and it looks like no one knows anything =(
Or, alternatively... they're getting an announcer that isn't Prog for the Smash 4 tournament =(
Cal! That's no way to talk to your senpai!
Oh my. I love the commentary you and D1 do. It is great.<3

I'm betting they're gonna try to keep the info about this close to the event so that people will know about who is going to be a part of it at around the same time as the people that are going to participate.Less than a month to go, and it looks like no one knows anything =(

The Mario vs. Mega Man guy from last year will be commentating the tournament. You've all been warned.
I know you're joking, but they wouldn't outright say "announcers" if they didn't have something special planned. The Mario vs. Mega Man guy from last year will be commentating the tournament. You've all been warned.

yeah, unless they have a non disclosure for talking about going to the tourney I think this tourney is press only![]()
Geoff god will win
Then it's a bit misleading to say 'skilled smash brothers players' if it's just members of the press. It implies that these are people who have played the game competitively or know the games very well. I doubt most members of the press have played a smash brothers since they had their website review brawl.
I need to be there when it fires again.Once you fire your Hyper Beam, it takes a full turn before you can use it again. In this case, the turn is about 2 months long.

highly skilled smash players invited to the event include reggie's son, sakurai's cat, and triforce

Did you honestly believe they would invite pro smash players to play in the tournament? They want a free for all 2 minute stock battles with items with reasonably skilled video game players.
But the number of Pokemon in Smash is honestly fine considering how popular the series is.
It *IS* invitation only, so clearly they must know who they're inviting, so it won't be people that are unknown.
Regarding Pokémon, lets take a look at roster representation in previous games:
SSB - 2/12 (16.66%)
Melee - 4/26 (15.38%)
Brawl - 6/39 (15.38%)
16% of a potential 48-50 character roster would be 7-8 Pokémon characters.
I'm absolutely certain that Jigglypuff and Mewtwo will both be playable. There's no doubt in my mind about that. I also think it's possible (though not very likely) that Sakurai might revisit Plusle & Minun, though that rests solely on how long ago he found out about Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire.
No way, I didn't know that.

That just means that they're not looking for people to apply. Bet they just go around asking some journalist that cover Nintendo games to participate + some minor celebrities and Nintendo employees.
Not to say that nintendo isn't a pro at disappointment, but it would be really disappointing if that's all they meant by 'highly skilled' smash bros players :/

I'm sure grabbing random posts from 2007 or whatever seemed like a good idea to you, but as it happens, I still post here. I no longer think Pokemon is a problem for Nintendo because the company has much bigger problems.

I'm just keeping my expectations in check with a bit of realism. They want to show of smash in a more or less controlled environment and with a slow to medium pace to not overwhelm audiences. Letting pro's have a go at it, potentially exploiting some tactics people don't know the counter for yet could also lead to some negative impressions.

I think the worry is that if the game looks too face-paced and technical, it'll scare off casuals/people who have never played Smash before. Nintendo will want to present it as a fun, pick-up-and-play party game.

I'd hate to see the kind of jobbers they invited to the tournament if fuckin' DSP managed to get to finals.
Why do a tournament at all then? By that logic Nintendo are already working against themselves. This seems like the most sensible way to do it. Nintendo's marketing this game to a general audience, not just to the competitive scene. I can see them inviting pro Smash players, but I wouldn't expect to see competitive-style matches.
I hear this idea brought up a lot, but I've never really been able to relate too it. I can understand the very casual players that avoid video games in general because they're hard. But the audience for Smash Bros. is primarily people that enjoy video games, considering it's basically a homage to every Nintendo game they can squeeze in. Seeing a fast, flashy technical game would excite most video game players. It's only when they get the controller in their hands that they would realize how difficult it is and get discouraged. But that assumes that Smash 4 is fast paced though, which I don't think will really be the case.I think the worry is that if the game looks too face-paced and technical, it'll scare off casuals/people who have never played Smash before. It's gonna be a bunch of YouTube celebrities. Game Grumps, PewDiePie, uh... that cat that plays the keyboard?

Then again, Nintendo ran a tournament at Gamestop around Brawl's launch with those exact rules, so you never know with these guys...
