Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 7: How Can My Smash Brother Be This Cut

Why do a tournament at all then? By that logic Nintendo are already working against themselves.

Is this really going to be a "tournament" in the strict sense - that is, is it really about which player is the most skilled? I doubt it. Given that the players probably won't have had more than a week with the game, so winning won't really prove anything. The players themselves probably won't take it too seriously. The point is to show off everything the game has to offer.

I hear this idea brought up a lot, but I've never really been able to relate too it. I can understand the very casual players that avoid video games in general because they're hard. But the audience for Smash Bros. is primarily people that enjoy video games, considering it's basically a homage to every Nintendo game they can squeeze in. Seeing a fast, flashy technical game would excite most video game players. It's only when they get the controller in their hands that they would realize how difficult it is and get discouraged. But that assumes that Smash 4 is fast paced though, which I don't think will really be the case.

But if it looks too fast and technical, then people might think it'll be too hard to just pick up and play. Imagine if your first taste of Smash was seeing a top-level Melee match. I have trouble keeping up with them sometimes, and I've been playing Smash since the N64, so I can definitely see someone new to Smash being unimpressed.

which does not make sense, given that this group of people presumably won't care much about the gameplay and just want to see the new characters/features/whatever (and also this game isn't going to pick up many people who haven't played Smash before, but this is a separate topic)

They won't care about the finer points of the gameplay - hitstun, whether there's wavedashing, etc. - but if the game looks totally inaccessible, that could give them pause.

Remember, Nintendo doesn't need to market this game to people who've been playing Smash for years, as those people will buy the game no matter what. They want to hook newcomers and people who played Brawl a little bit and are debating whether to buy the new installment.

'I could imagine that Sakurai would want to slowly disconfirm the characters that people have been requesting by displaying the trophies of characters such as Dillion, Wonder Red, etc.' and 'I wonder how long it would last'.
Whoever agreed to correct your grammar is slipping.

Personally, I think he'll carry on displaying trophies to disconfirm characters up to E3, then have a blowout on who is playable there.

That was me and I'm sorry. Personal life quite busy right now so I haven't been anything but a lurker here lately;
forgive me, Heath

I actually thought of a format for 1v1 with items that could be somewhat interesting...but it's not like that's gonna happen lol
(maybe I could run it on GAF someday)

I'm bored, so here are some Assist Trophies I'd like to see:

Bowser Jr.
Bowser Jr. hovers around in his Clown Car, and he hurls bombs down at the stage below.

King K. Rool
K. Rool charges back and forth across the screen (hurting anyone in his path), and he’ll also throw his crown.

Waddle Dee
Waddle Dee attacks opponents with his spear in a variety of ways, and he’ll also use it as a projectile.

Medusa
Medusa’s giant head floats in the background, and she fires quick lasers from her eye that freeze opponents in place on contact (perhaps also turning them gray).

Duck Hunt
Ducks fly across the screen, and a CPU-controlled crosshair moves around shooting at the ducks. Opponents caught in the crossfire will be hurt.

Sheriff
The original Sheriff sprite walks around shooting his gun in different directions.

I don't really expect it to be your full time job. Just few advices would be helpful enough for me. :) Thank you very much for that!

No worries - I spoilered the last bit because I didn't actually know if you were correcting him by PM or not.

Yeah, we talked over PM.

Ok this is the first legit funny one you've made since the Mega Man one.

Speaking of old, is there something older than Game Color TV 15?
Yokoi's Beam Gun which came in both pistol and rifle forms (1975). They appeared in Warioware. Color TV Game came out in 1977, the same year when the sentai JakQ used Nintendo playing cards as explosive projectiles.

Nintendo's not going to put 'realistic' guns in Smash Bros though.

I image that, even if Nintendo was stupid enough to invite Youtube gamers, they would avoid DSP, because they would probably want to keep it at least somewhat family friendly.

Nintendo has had certain Youtubers do promotional videos for them, i.e. Mega64, Josh Jepson, ProJared, Underbelly Show, TheRunawayGuys, The Completionist, Andre the Black Nerd and various others. If they were to go the Youtuber route instead of journalist or professional players, I would expect them to go with ones they've contacted before

*tries digging for videos of these guys playing Smash to see who's at least decent*

Just put Gambit using Hanafuda cards in the game and kill two birds with one stone.

yeah it kinda defeats the purpose of having a tournament with "highly skilled players" if they're going to do free for alls with items on, on any stage. Might as well just call it a Smash Bros exhibition with Bill Trinen and the rest of Treehouse.

Then again, Nintendo ran a tournament at Gamestop around Brawl's launch with those exact rules, so you never know with these guys...
I completely disagree. The idea is brilliant.

If you have a "no items" tournament, the casuals watching will get very, very bored. Sakurai would be hurting the fan base's interest.

However, if he just let anyone play on the big screen, tournament players would be bored as well, wishing they could see what the game is like when skilled players interact with it.

This gives both groups a little something to be happy about. Neither will think it is perfect, but this is one of those situations where spreading the love is better than concentrating it.

Cool POTD. It's what we already know, but it is a nice Assist Trophy.
You can get interesting 100% of the time every six-eight months, or a 40% chance of interesting 4-5 times a week
I'll take the latter here myself. I like the way the POTD is being ran.
Yeah, bayonetta would be bad for me too, even though I like her as a character. Going to be hard to explain to my girlfriend that a character who basically gets naked every time she uses a special move is still OK for kids.

Also, If K.Rool does make it in, he'd be a stage boss, imo!
If by stage boss you mean something like Yellow Devil or Ridley, then I highly doubt that. Every boss we've seen that have been end stage bosses typically have massive, sweeping hitboxes and stage bosses like Yellow Devil and Ridley fit those descriptions. King K. Rool does not and I'll be very surprised if he was one.

He could be a mid-stage boss on Smash Run or the Wii U version though, as well as an Assist Trophy. However, I still think that he's a good contender for being playable (I really don't see the problem with K. Rool being playable).
Very nice, it's not final and complete confirmation, but it's still something.
I'll have a rough draft worked on sometimes today. Not sure when I'll post it, but hopefully sometimes very soon. And while these don't necessarily kill the leak, it's strong enough reasons to believe that RosalinaX should not be taken seriously.
Why are people anti K Rool?

Why are people anti characters?

ah fuck it
"King K. Rool not relevant/popular/unique enough to get in!" or my favorite "He's owned by Rare!" (yes, this is still used).

Both of which are faulty arguments. I've seen these same shoddy arguments used towards Mega Man to an even greater extent and he still got in. Plus that last argument, I have no words for how wrong that is.

The only legitimate arguments are Dixie Kong being competition and whenever or not Sakurai has any bias against him. The first argument is flawed because it implies that only one can get on over the other (even though we could still get two and that Sakurai will most likely look at both individually, not against each other) and there's no indication one way or another that Sakurai may or may not want him as playable. I do think we'll see a larger role than a trophy, though.
Yeah, the idea of "slots" is a bad outlook on viewing the game, like there's some boogeyman holding up a character's entry.
One of the worst arguments I have ever seen against a character period. I see people use this against Mewtwo, which is ridiculous.
Kremlings are the most obvious generic DK enemies to include in Smash Run, so I don't necessarily see what they have to do with a playable K. Rool. He could still just be an Assist Trophy or stage hazard.
The reason why people made a big deal out of it is because they're enemies that haven't been seen in years and yet they are back in Smash Run. That indicates that Sakurai has not forgotten about Kremlings and by extent, hasn't forgotten about King K. Rool as well. I'm pretty sure K. Rool has at least been seriously considered for playable status, whenever or not he does get in remains to be seen.
I made the thread afterall:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=819724

I'd suggest everyone playing ProjectM to register their friendcode ASAP, although I have no idea how MacOS or Linux users are supposed to patch their ISO. If anyone plays ProjectM off the disk: Time to install homebrew :P
You have no idea how glad I am this came to being. I'll make sure to do this.

He'd be fine in any of the 4 possible situations he could be in:
1. Playable - Sakurai could craft a unique moveset for him, for sure
2. Assist trophy. Crown toss, whatever, would be fun.
3. Boss - Just because ridley/yellow devil are huge, that does not rule out K. Rool as a boss. Maybe he runs around and he's hard to hit. Maybe he throws his crown all the time, which makes it annoying to get close. We've seen 1 boss, and 1 shadow of a boss. We don't know how sakurai will handle the other stage bosses (if there are more).
4. Background character on a stage/ stage hazard - I'd love a DK pirate ship with him in the background, occasionally messing with people.

You're forgetting about the Find Mii ghost and KK from Zelda!

Do we know if they're 'bosses' or 'hazards'? They seem more like hazards to me. Bosses have to be able to take damage and then trigger something once defeated. Find mii ghost could very well be a boss, but Koutake and Koume just seem to swoop in, cast their fire/ice magic, and then leave.

I find it amusing you think you will get a response for a post made 7 years ago.

Well, more like waiting for a response recently since he did reply :P

With that said it felt more like a driveby post than anything so I wouldn't expect substantial or a reply.

WARIO, RIDLEY AND MASTER CHIEF CONFIRMED

That's the spirit! IT'S FRIDAY, SO IT MUST BE SO

We're definitely getting a veteran tonight.

I hope so, but I wouldn't be bummed though...I still feel full from all that delicious info from the Direct :) I'll be good until E3.

Yes, we must only look forward to character deconfirmation AT/Trophies and That's so Ridley gifs.

Essentially, but that's not as fun
except for the Ridley posts :P

I'm hoping for a Kirby stage, I can't believe we've gone so long without one revealed yet!
