Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 7: How Can My Smash Brother Be This Cut

People are holding out hope for DLC.

It is ridiculous that mainstays like Birdo, Bowser Jr. and Diddy aren't in. Even moreso when Birdo is in the game's fake advertisement.

It's sad the new characters are the koopalings, Pink Gold Peach and Baby Rosalina.
I think the Koopalings are awesome. They should've left out the babies and metals though and it is strange to leave those three out. Would've been nice for other original characters like Prof. E Gadd, Cranky Kong, Dixie Kong, Kamek, Luma, Sprixie, Noki, Whittle, etc. As playable characters over some of the other choices.

Koopalings are cool, if they replaced the metal characters with a couple fan favorites the roster would be a lot better. The metal characters are just boring as hell.

100% agree with this. I wish they'd also mine the Mario RPG games for characters. I know Geno would run into character rights issues, but Fawful or Dimentio would be amazing.

I don't hate the koopalings, but my problem with them in MK8 is the fact I don't really see them as different people. I like them as a whole, not individually. In the Mario games, they are different (well, most of them), but in MK8, they kind of are basically palette swaps that are just there to fit every weight class.

The Koopalings haven't really been relevant since the SMB3 days, when they were in all the cartoon shows. That's when they actually had different personalities, and that's when it would have been cool to see them in a Mario Kart. Their recent appearances are just fan service, and they certainly don't warrant seven separate character slots.

MK8's roster is by far the worst and most baffling of the series.

We'll probably see a 3DS release date at least at E3 right? Trying to figure out when we're likely to have final roster

It's more likely that we are getting 3DS release date but I really hope that they are going to keep secret characters as surprise but I somewhat doubt that.

It seems they're back to stay this time, they've made more rapid appearances in the last five years. I wouldn't be surprised if the models in MK8 were being developed for the inevitable model library for third party spinoffs, and that's why the Koopalings got priority over a bunch of other regulars.

Doesn't make it less of a disappointing roster, but at least the tracks are king.

DLC would make sense given how small the roster is, but wouldn't they have announced it already like they did with the Mario Golf season passes? Nintendo just did a whole Direct devoted to MK8, after all. They could announce it at E3, but it seems weird to release a game and then announce the DLC less than two weeks later.

Then again, this is Nintendo. Weird is their MO.

They also didn't need 5 baby characters. That's a whole 6th of the roster.

I've never understood Nintendo's fascination with the babies. They were good for padding out Super Sluggers' roster, but not much else. Baby Mario & Luigi were enough for Kart.

So why even have more than one character per weight class? Why have more plumber characters than Mario and Wario? Luigi and Waluigi be wasting slots. Who needs Daisy when you got Peach? Toadette isn't needed when you got Toad? People don't bitch nearly as much about characters on the roster whose sole existences are based entirely or almost entirely on spinoff games yet the Koopalings, who have been in multiple mainline Mario games over the past 25+ years, finally get accepted onto a roster and they're treated like a waste of space by many. People would rather have generic enemies over a diverse cast of actual characters. It's baffling.

The Koopalings have been in several titles in recent years where they performed the same role as they did in SMB3 and World. Anyway, personally I disagree, I felt Wii and MK7 had plenty of terrible choices. Wii's introduction of Funky Kong, Baby Peach, Baby Daisy and, Dry Bowser (I kinda liked him though). Rosalina was the only worthwhile character. 7 also introduced Honey Queen Bee, Wiggler and Metal Mario which were all kinda lame and had a significantly reduced cast compared to DD and Wii's roster. Lakitu was alright though.

Those are the ones you want.

Like rosalina in mario gold, and bowser jr is on that roster.

You just called the Koopalings diverse cast of characters lol...

And your examples are piss poor when you consider that there aren't 7 plumbers or 7 versions of toads.

And thank you for generalizing my statements as I would want generic enemies. I actually wanted Birdo (who has only been a 'generic' enemy in SMB2), Bowser Jr., and Diddy to still be in the game. Dry Bowser would also be cool to come back, much more visually distinct than 7 koopalings. Dixie, Cranky, E. Gadd, King Boo (was in Double Dash actually, forgot about that), and some WarioWare characters.

But you can go ahead and generalize my argument instead.

But the reason they used to be popular, I think, was more because of the cartoons than SMB3. The cartoons gave them all cute, distinct personalities; without them, I doubt they'd have become fan favorites. But the cartoons, and the personalities the Koopalings had in them, are long gone, so much of their appeal is gone. They're cool additions, to be sure, but if people think that they're wasting roster slots, then people will complain.

As for other roster additions you mention, I agree with you on every single one except Funky Kong. He's so stupid and his voice acting is so terrible that I love him.

Baby Birdy Ridley and Meta Ridley.

Agreed. Every new character looks really fun to play with. You know it's something when WFT looks like the most boring-to-play addition, considering she still looks super fun to play as.

I definitely agreed with you there. I'm eagerly looking forward to see what Sakurai could do with other newcomers that we don't know. It's fun part about Smash Hype.

Actually, the animations change based on the clothing worn & not the Villagers gender.

Yeah I know this, I tried a dress on once in the game
I was shopping for a friend I swear

Also, this only in New Leaf. The Smash Villagers are based on the City Folk iterations.

Didn't realise this, New Leaf was my first AC game so this explains why Villager is short and stubby.
