Sony's E3 2014 - What are we all expecting?

Why do you think sony won't announce any new games ?
 
In hindsight, last year was a hilarious year in terms of trying to guess Sony.

Feb Event:
What was expected: Nobody really expected games announcements, as a hardware reveal first-and foremost.
What we got: 4 exclusive retail first-party games, and one 3rd-party exclusive game. (Deep Down)

E3:
What was expected: The alpha and the omega of game events, where people expect megatons,etc.
What we got: 1 exclusive first-party retail game. ( and 6 small indie games)

Gamescom:
What was expected: A shittier E3, aka lower expectations than E3, but still quite high. ( and insiders said to not expect anything, so expectations lowered further)
What we got: 8 exclusive first-party games ( 1 PS3, 2 Vita, 5 PS4). ( and a dozen indie games )

TGS:
What was expected: HAHAHAHA LOL JAPAN.
What we got: 4 exclusive Vita games ( 3 3rd-party, 1 first-party), 7 PS4 games announcements. ( all 3rd-party, status of long-term exclusivity unknown )

There's nothing wrong with this list. It's a very good, well thought out process that shows a decent pattern. But, there is good reason for this pattern not to hold, and that's: It's a new generation. With new generations bring new patterns.

If nothing else, the simple fact that Sony's in first place again and wants to hold onto that should make E3 interesting.

Either way, it's not a race I'm interested in. I bought a PS4 because it was cheaper and the more powerful system. In the end, 3rd parties always benefit me more than 1st party. All I need is for UC4 to look good, RAD to show more of The Order, and Guerilla Games' open-world title to be third-person and take place in a unique world that I want to play in. Outside of that? Meh.

I honestly care more about Sleeping Dogs 2, Arkham Knight, potential Battlefront news, Final Fantasy XV, and maybe Just Cause 3 depending on where it's set and how it looks.

If I was Sony, I'd see how well-received MS's E3 last year was in terms of game reveals/pacing that I'd ape that format, where announcements are plentiful, but extremely laser-focused.

And we cannot exclude the consideration that with a new regional boss ( Shawn Layden ), we're also seeing some changes to how these things are being implemented. It'd be a strong first-appearance if he's associated with multiple new game reveals, instead of say "2 games announced a month before, and 2 games at E3."

Really hard to tell, especially since from X on, each entry has been so radically different from the previous that you have fans of certain styles of FF that don't like _ style of gameplay compared to the ones that they like.

I have friends who LOVE I-X that hate the fact that XV is basically an action-rpg. It's going to be really interesting to see how that game is received, because the one thing I do hear everyone saying about it is praise for how the characters/world look (so far).
 
These third party exclusives that are rumored for xbox are most likely bullshit. We had the same thing during the reveal and last E3. They won't moneyhat anything relevant because it's too expensive.

I remember last year, almost everything was supposedly Xbone exclusive. lol
 
I wonder how much Titanfall and Gears dented Microsoft's 1 billion dollar commitment to content.

What was it last year, Fallout 4, DmC and Prince of Persia or something?

Yeah, I can't believe this seems to be happening again especially with how the past year has gone. I expect to see lots of third parties at MS' conference but not many third party exclusives.

I wasn't on GAF then, but I remember seeing rumours flare up on Dragon Age 3, the next Mass Effect and Battlefield going to be XBox exclusive, or some insane stuff like that.

Now we're hearing Fallout, Red Dead, GTAV, etc.

I believe this, and yet...a year's a long time, man. In that time, Microsoft's had to completely retool the way they initially planned the Xbox. They've spent every month trailing behind Sony, even when their big gun that nobody would shut up about came out, last month they've sunken lower than the 360 ever did, and most recently they dropped the Kinect despite originally claiming that it was a vital, integral portion to the XBox One experience. There's even a growing contingent of people wondering if the Wii U might just top the One's sales for a month. (I doubt it, but it might come close.)

What I'm saying is...Microsoft wants to win. And nothing wins like exclusives. In fact, I'm far less worried for MS than I am for Sony, and I'm a Sony fan. MS is doing everything it can to place itself back in first place. Meanwhile Sony...hasn't had to do much of anything. The concern is that Sony will hold back reveals not because they're trying to wait until a game is perfect, but they're doing so because there's no other legitimate competition.

What is funny is that all three will most likely be advertised as ps4 games since rock star and Bethesda are partnered with sony for now.

I don't believe there's particularly any obligated ongoing partnership between any of these companies. They'll side with whoever provides the better offer.

An essentially Sony sanctioned E3 thread (You're your own person so it's okay I bet)? I'm curious, and also on board. Surprise me.

What do I expect from Sony E3? For them to take all the things we don't think they'll do because it doesn't directly benefit them, and do it. Things like disc based backwards compatibility and cloud streaming for games you already own digitally. Those would be much bigger deals than any one game (unless it's something I can't even imagine). Also, I'm gonna just go crazy and start expecting more than just a typical E3. Typically, 3 new AAA announcements is a miracle, but we've getting so many singles that I'm upping that to 5. 1 for Winter 2014, 1 for Spring 2015, 1 for Summer 2015, 2 for Winter 2015. And I want some indie exclusives. I want a True Exclusives ( No PC, PS3 or god help I'm so sorry, Vita [ Though, I'll take an exception ;) ] ) for every month of 2015. Something Transistor-The Witness sized. Things like Helldivers and Hohokum are good. Give me something to spend my money on.

Also, don't forget to say hi to the audience that's watching the stream via the internet. It makes us feel special. I hope Mr.Layden is a likable interviewee.

For a company that wanted to win, where's my $299 SKU with Kinect and $199 Kinectless SKU? Where's the no Gold paywall for MP?

To me, my rational belief is that if MS were really attempting to do something insane, Sony of all people wouldn't take it lying down. They know, how potentially fatal a megaton XB1 exclusive will be. If MS were able to lay blank cheques for all that, I find it hard to believe that Sony wouldn't counter with something of their own, if only to maintain parity.

Any business, rationally, looks internally first to address their issues before working with external people on it, because relationships change as swiftly as the wind in businesses. I can believe MS dropping prices, I can believe MS signing multiple first-party exclusives, but suddenly going to the insane depths of exclusifying a major 3rd-party franchise at the scale of a megaton?

I find that hard to believe.

Could Shawn Layden be the reason behind the different strategy Playstation is taking this year in announcing games? As the SCEA president, I would imagine him being the guy to have the final word on game announcements related to E3. After Andrew House ofc.

Maybe he is the E3 megaton host Neogaf deserves?
 
Excitement level is low at the moment. Last year it was super high

Sony has been really quiet and the same is true for the insiders. No hints at all, all we got was a Project beasts leak....and then all the departures from various studios and cancelled ssm project.

I hope sony delivers though

I think part of this issue is that people think that because MS has so much money that the Xbox division is allowed to go wild with that money. They aren't. You constantly hear issues with shareholders and rumors about selloffs of it for a reason. They don't have that free reign over all that money that some think that they do. That doesn't meant that they don't have a lot of money to spend, but it's not the infinite pit that some believe it is. If it were then you never would've heard them make that quote about not focusing on being the most powerful console. They would've just made sure it was and ate the costs.

Anyway, one thing is for sure and it's that the PS4 is much more important to the future of Sony than the Xbox is to MS. Sony is in more of a position where they'll do anything to make sure that it's a big success.
 
This is the largest silence we've ever witnessed from Sony. Odd. They normally have a few large reveals in the lead up to E3, but this year, nope.

Not complaining so long as they have a great show. Would be disappointed if it just ended up like last year and we hardly receive any game announcements though.

I just want some new IPs

I'm all for showing sequels such as Uncharted as well as brand new footage of already announced games such as The Order 1886, but I want the bulk of the show to bring us some fantastic new IP's

New generation should bring introduce franchises.
 
At least Driveclub is out of way, but why keeping the order 1886 too quiet. 20-30mins demo? I think it should be on pre-e3 better as we know what it will be. Let surprise titles have own demo section.

I'm trying to understand this logic because I see this all the time and I just don't get it.

Do you expect them to not announce or show some gameplay footage of any of their 2014/2015 games just because they're in the lead? Let's say they decided to do this at E3 for some reason (they won't)...Now the announcement/reveal ---> release date is much shorter. To me, that's good, but they need to get people excited for the upcoming months.

I'm not sure where this "oh man, they're in the lead so there's no way they'll show anything" mentality is coming from. Wouldn't it be wise to have a big showing to run a few more laps around the competitors? Sony sees far more benefits by chasing the Wii's sales burst than just being above the X1/Wii U.

More consoles = more subscriptions (this is where a ton of money comes from. Remember what games Sony and Microsoft released in 2013 and how the number of PS+ subscriptions jumped in Q4.) more developers making games for the console, and more games sold.
Higher gap between competitors = the benefits of the friends effect and overall mouth of word becomes more important.

Basically Demon Souls 2, with guns possibly replacing magic (Think a guy in the screenshots had a sword and a shotgun), so a lot of people getting hyped over an Evil Dead Souls game.
 
I cant believe they are probably going to waste stage time on TLOU PS4.

I was expecting a small pre E3 showing for that like Sony normally does but it seems they are keeping every little thing for the show. I expect a lot of time on games already announced.

I only expect 1 new SCE reveal
 
I just hope that they are focusing on their internal studios and second party offerings, the third party stuff (that we often can see elsewhere) with the "exclusive missions!"-stuff should be kept to a minimum.

Oh, and games, games, games. Sony is always loosing the pacing race to MS, please, let this year be different.

You might see a remaster of that game, but that's about it. Cory has already said Twitter that it's too early to show what he's working on. And we know he's working on the next GoW.

If it's not X, and a proper Dragon Quest XI game, it would be the megaton of the show for a lot of people (unless some crazy shit like FFVIIR happened).

It's weird, because I couldn't honestly care less about SCEA stuff aside from middle-ground titles that will never get announced anyways. It's all those potential 3rd party, Japanese-developed announcements that could rock my world and make want to buy a PS4 now instead of getting another PS3 and clearing out my backlog.

This is the first time in recent memory where there haven't been major leaks coming out of the Sony camp before an E3, and I'm not sure whether or not that's cause for concern or just a revived Sony handling things differently and making sure stuff doesn't get out there beforehand.

The show will be 2+ hours likely. TLOU may be 5 minutes

Yeah Dragon Quest popped into my head because they usually end up on the largest console userbase and the way PS4 is taking off I'd imagine they are inking a deal to put the next single player console version on PS4

I know PS4 has too much remastered games but i hope that this one and GoW3 will really be announced
 
I wonder if we'll see/hear anything about the PS1/PS2 emulator for PS4 at E3. That would be a pretty big announcement imo. Especially if it is disc compatible.

I have never participated in an E3 on GAF before, but when do Sony leaks usually
come out? E3 is still 2-3 weeks away. Is there time for anything to leak?
 
Not much. I think it wont be as good as some are expecting it to be. There wont be too many reveals.

Best we will get is TLOU reveal for next gen and maybe a proper trailer for Uncharted 4.

I've been lurking on here for a long time, and I recall always getting a few juicy tidbits a month or two before the event happened. Jack Tretton even joked about it onstage back in 2009 when they announced FFXIV for the first time (because it hadn't leaked).

And I'm sure a few do own the system among those people, but most of them don't. It was no different last year too really. So this isn't anything unique not seen before.

Again sales sales sales. You just said yourself you sold yours because it didn't have games you liked..and guess why that is? Because like you, sony also thinks about the vita same way. I mean again if this is your angle why they shouldn't spend a a meager amount of time like 15mins on the system, then they should have ditched the PS3 in it's first year. The financial ruin that system brought the company has not been overcome even now. but aren't we all glad they didn't? Even after some horrific first years and losing marketshare big time

IF the company was actually 'smart' as you say, no system of theirs should be selling sub 5k a month in a market as large as NA. Vita is insignificant in the long term of things when it comes to sony's troubles too fyi. If you actually check their financial statements in the past years, this is a none issue for them. Their troubles with losing money primarily lies elsewhere.

Again not saying they should go crazy with the system..that's your own imaginary take on it. I'm saying they can spare about 15mins for content/features/bundles etc for the system. It won't harm the PS4 and it certainly won't harm the ps3.

but yeah I'm happy with the systems content. Lots of localization happening and I actually have a backlog now. I'm just saying the way sony is handling the system at these big events is absolutely pathetic. I mean don't change your initial argument now, you said no one cares etc about vita at these shows, yet I recall many gamers in general being happy with reveals such as Tearaway, KZ Merc, Gravity Rush too. Because at the end of the day we play the games, not the sales. And sony can do much much worse (and have in the past) than spend a brief amount of time about a great piece of gaming hardware like the vita

I agree with everything except this. The Vita is the only thing that is keeping the Playstation name floating in Japan right now and its user baser is growing more than last year. Publisher are developing more games for it, and their games are selling well on it. It's fostering and strengthening playstation's relationship with third party in Japan, so it is very important. Besides it is profitable so that always counts for something.
