Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 7: How Can My Smash Brother Be This Cut

I just realized why people wanted Brittany and the other captains as "alternates" for Olimar. I'm thinking people thought Sakurai could make it "Pikmin & Captains". Same moveset and everything, but with different captains. That would have been neat, though their body shapes are quite different aren't they? Alph is close to Olimar though.
I'm aware of that, but why can't we have a "retro" villain of a franchise, too? (Not that King K. Rool is really "retro" at all...but you know what I mean. He doesn't have to have appeared in recent games for him to be a viable option for a playable character in Smash Bros.)
I'm making a clear distinction in my posts as to why I think King K. Rool won't be playable. DK is an active series. Kid Icarus was a defunct series.

King K. Rool is a somewhat old character in an active series. Pit was an old character in a defunct series.

The one thing Sakurai has been consistent with is that active series have active characters as newcomers.

Pit's concept allowed Sakurai to implement a unique mechanic in gliding. I'm sure that Sakurai included Ice Climbers because he wanted to experiment with dual characters.

What could K. Rool bring to other than being another overgrown lizard?
While I'm well aware he's not in at this point, his Blunderbuss was pretty kickass in DKC2 and there's nothing stopping them working in some elements from Returns where he'll whip out Kalimba and hypnotise someone.

If lack of personality was a reason to exclude a character, then half the roster wouldn't have made it in (G&W, Link, ROB, etc.) Ditto for "hasn't appeared in a game in ten years" (G&W, Ice Climbers, etc.) At the end of the day, DaBoss is probably right:

DaBoss said:
And with that also said, please don't compare his relevancy in the DK series to another character in Smash. That isn't an argument for a character at all. Each character's inclusion is under unique circumstances.

...but that also makes it impossible to discuss who's in and who's out, since other characters on the roster are our only point of reference. We have to compare potential newcomers to other character, because we have no other real way to talk about them.

I may have exaggerated that by a bit and made it unclear. It is possible to compare the circumstances of when the (existing Smash) characters were added and not their current circumstances.

Would be easier to not just compare it and instead just state reasons like relevance, popularity, uniqueness, and etc.

And honestly, I find character discussions tiring due to that lol. It is all just conjecture really and we don't know if most of the things are what Sakurai thinks.

They didn't change Diddy's rocket pack from DK64 to his Returns/TF one, so maybe relevancy within the franchise doesn't matter? Besides, a playable K. Rool could lead to a proper stance change character between his different costumes, and that would be pretty darn interesting to see.

Fire Emblem was an active series (in Japan, at least) when it was represented with playable characters in Melee. Marth, however, had not been in a Fire Emblem game in 7 years prior to Melee, yet he was included as a playable character. That's the same amount of time that King K. Rool has currently been absent from the Donkey Kong series.

Marth had two games that he starred in vs none for Rool, he currently has 4 games total that he's the main chracter of and the most recent game (Fire Emblem Awakening) Marth is a major part of that game as part of the mythology and the plot. Marth's way closer to Donkey Kong than he is to King K. Rool.

But that's a feature of a character, not a character itself. They gave Mario FLUDD, which is hardly relevant to the Mario series in general (I believe Brawl is the only game other than Sunshine to have FLUDD in it.) Picking an obscure element of an important character and using it as a move is one thing - picking an obscure/irrelevant/no-longer-relevant character from a bigger series is totally different.

Besides, a playable K. Rool could lead to a proper stance change character between his different costumes, and that would be pretty darn interesting to see.

What do you mean by stance change? You mean Soul Calibur-style, like Maxi or Ivy? I can't see that working for Smash. Too complex.

I know, but when has that ever been reason to not include a character in Smash Bros. if they're significant enough to their franchise or Nintendo as a whole?
Sakurai includes who he wants - roster arguments are silly. I was just disagreeing with a premise that was made.

I see what you mean. Yeah, it's way too different (and I totally forgot aboutt he FLUDD. God I hate that thing)

I meant more like Gen in Street Fighter. That could work in Smash and would be a better alternative to full on transformation characters.

I believe Marth was recommended to Sakurai by Intelligent Systems as a good representative of the Fire Emblem series along with another character (but Sakurai ended up choosing Roy). Marth is also the protagonist of the games he was featured.

Roommate and I preordered our WiiU today. Getting the Mario Cart 8 Bundle too for all the shits and giggles.

Assuming we get atleast the 3DS Launch Date at e3, do you think we also get the Full Roster Reveal?

We'll get a few reveals at E3, but I doubt it'll be the full roster. Given that there will likely be 2 months or so between E3 and the release, they'll need to keep some material secret so they still have stuff to reveal in the interim.

Expect a full STARTING roster at E3 if we get a release date by then.

I think we'll get at least close to the starting roster. Depends on when the game comes out. They don't want it to be dead air before the game releases, so I'm guessing we'll get the last starting character reveal the same month the game releases.

not really, Wii boom + them putting everything Mario (i.e. Mario Kart, Mario Party, and everything else) together=massive sales
now on an 8th gen chart, Mario isn't getting anywhere near that
Oh man, I totally misread that chart. I just sort of glanced at it and thought it was sales of all time. Haha, yeah, if it's just since 2005 that makes way more sense.

I'm finding it really hard to gauge how much could potentially be revealed at E3. There was basically nothing revealed about Brawl at E3-2007... but on the other hand, the usage of the current site for reveals is very different to the Dojo that was in use at the time.

The only thing that can be guaranteed is at least one newcomer trailer. A release date/starting roster do seem likely. I just don't want to be foolhardy!

A 3DS launch date at E3 would be sweet. We already have a season, so according to the Nintendo Release Date Cycle, we should be getting a month next ;)

well shit, look at what I just saw

I'd be very surprised if we don't get a specific date for the 3DS version.

I'm kind of expecting a release month for the Wii U version as well, but that's definitely much less likely.

Tonyh just posted this in the awesome fan art thread...

OMG

Villager you bastard!

You think he would have full control of the fireball like Zelda would?

Anyone have a list of everything Nintendo is doing at E3? I'm confused.

Smash tourney, the digital Direct (?), 1.5hr Smash discussion, 1.5hr 3DS new title..

What else am I missing?
