Nintendo invites fans to the Super Smash Bros. Invitational

Yes, of course. The Digital Event is at 9 AM while the Tournament is at 4 PM. Just imagine if Nintendo would do the Tournament at 9 AM and the Digital Event at 15 PM they could right use the same audience and room for their big announcements, it would be 2004 all over again.

15 PM?

Japan Time

I think Nintendo will have something special at the Smash Event.

Just fill the front row with Rosalina and Wii Fit Trainer cosplayers

What I don't understand is how the 16 contestants were chosen. Was it through the fighting game tournament (that Nintendo forbid, then allowed) that happened last year? Was it through some Japan-only tournament (probably more likely)? What can regular people like us DO to get in to the top 16?

This is great nonetheless. It should be an exciting show. I'll be livestreaming it of course since I don't have the time nor the money to fly out to Los Angeles and stand in line for a chance to be a part of the audience.

Supposedly, this guy is in charge of making the list of people to invite and he's part of NoA. He's been in a few of the Directs before (usually when they have to announce some localizations? I think?) Anyway, if you check who he's following you can see he's following tons of Smashers from Mango to Android (Armada's younger brother) to Kounotori (Japanese Falco player) to progducto to TKBreezy to ChuDat to even Shroomed and S2J (there's more he's following obviously, like he IS following Armada).

Now obviously that's not an indication of who will be invited exactly, in the end, but it's a good sign that because he's the one making the list of invitees we may see some of the people he's following on it. And also, him following prog and D1 gives good hope that they might be the commentators. Again, it's at least a sign that someone in NoA seems to follow the Smash competitive community.

I really hope it turns out OK, anyway. I really doubt Nintendo would use some small Japanese tournament to decide who gets invited to this lol.

Although weirdly he's not following PPMD or Mew2King. But like I said, who he's following wouldn't necessarily be a 100% indicator of who's on the list lol.

This has me all tingly.

Music to my ears

An interesting part to all of this is that Nintendo is turning a big part of E3 into a consumer Expo.

Wonder if other companies take notice and follow that lead. I'm wary of the Comic-conization of E3, but its current status as a retail and press only event is obviously changing.

It's not the first time.
The famous 2004 E3 that everyone talks about was open to the public.
And other years have been open as well.
Regardless, the pass only gets you into this single event. Not on the E3 floor.

Yeah apparently in NoA they also had a small Melee tournament a week ago or so and he mains Peach. When he asked for advice about the Sheik MU some smashers that follow him (because he's following them) gave him tips on what to do against her (her Fair in particular). Someone even jokingly asked for ClashTournaments to stream any of their NoA tournaments lol.

So he definitely dabbles in the competitive side himself. And we always knew Treehouse still played Melee.

Is the digital event the direct? Or when the media ask Sakurai questions? I'm a little confused.

Digital Event is basically the press conferene this year, except it's not live.
Smash Bros. Invitational is a tournament being held on the afternoon after the Digital Event.
The Smash Bros. Discussion will then take place at 7 later that night I believe.

Edit: Beaten

Hm. That inspires some confidence.

I wonder how early one would need to line up to make it in the first 3,000 in line? 7am? Earlier? Trying to figure out if I should throw on my Ness outfit and head over half-asleep or not.

Where did you get this info?

they would probably invite whoever accepts their "terms of agreement" and will not talk badly about the game no matter what..pretty much what EA did with all the youtube fifa guys

3000 is a lot of people. I'm sure 7 AM would gain you entrance, right?

You should at least try. I'd love some personal experience from someone on Gaf.

lol what? People would be able to play the game at Best Buy and talk badly about the game themselves. Silly logic there.

Profanity is something they wouldn't want to occur during the tournament.
i was pretty sure it said tuesday. im probably mistaken though
Wednesday. Tuesday is for the Smash Bros roundtable.

3 weeks until this starts

It would be nice to hear who the participants are

I want to see good players in a free for all, items on, best of 1, all stages single elimination tournament.

So who of the pros do you guys want to see there

AMSA because his Yoshi is incredible, obviously. I think M2K would be a good choice, he's versed in Melee and Brawl and he's pretty known for having a number of "mains" so he'll probably show off the character variety a bit more.

Mango and PeePee are just damn good in their fields, naturally, so those guys have just gotta show up.

Oh, and long shot: there was a dude at a Project M tourney who I can't remember the name of (something beginning with "P") but his DK was INSANE. It was so fun.

I'm going to be seriously disappointed if Falcon isn't a selectable character for the tournament. Knee hype is too strong.
