MCU fan here and I'm very excited for DoFP. I'm fine with Fox keeping the rights, just keep doing the characters justice, as they seem to be doing with this film.
I would agree if not for the fact that the MCU can't use the term mutant or properly explain who the Maximoff twins are. I don't necessarily need X-Men in my MCU movies, but I do want access to some of the auxiliary characters.

I don't see how people can put First Class above X2

Because its really really good.

Its funny how they show Magneto and Xavier working together for such short time and yet their friendship seems pretty real...

...something that obviously didnt work in Thor, in which thor spend 3 days with natalie portman and decides she is the love of his life

Hm? Why is the workprint better than the theatrical?

Have you SEEN the workprint?

But honestly...it was more entertaining and laughable than seeing the awful effects put together. It gave it the bad, B-movie vibe that it was supposed to be that awful and not taking seriously in any regard. You can't say that about the theatrical.

Just how long do you think Mags and X palled around for? We know Thor spent 3 days with Jane. I'd say they spent a good 4-6 months together getting to know each other.

You are right, Thor was about 3 days but Charles and Erik were only together for 3 weeks tops. And even that is stretching it.

I could see people really loving First Class if they just saw it the once. I remember coming out of the theater feeling really pumped about it, especially with Magneto's theme playing during those credits. It was only on rewatch that I realize how bad everything without Fassbender/Bacon/McAvoy was.

Just got back. Movie delivered. It's probably as good as it gets in terms of adapting Days of Future Past into a live action film with the same continuity and cast from the existing movies. Pretty satisfying. Trask was fantastic. Editing was really good. Not that this would be a particularly high bar, but I think it's probably one of the better made time travel blockbusters out there - reminded me a lot of Terminator 2 in terms of execution.

It's pretty interesting to see the DNA of both X2 and First Class very obviously intertwined into the film's structure. The way mutants and a large cast of characters are used is right out of the X2 playbook, with memorable but short scenes for almost every character, great power showcases, nothing which really bogs down the pace of the film either. The bigger set pieces and the way it uses a period setting is very much First Class influence though. Might be a detriment to those who didn't like how in-your-face the historical references and reimagination of history with X-men in it were, but I thought it was pretty fun, even if some stuff got a bit over the top in scale.

Looks like Bryan Singer still has it as a director. Too bad about all the other stuff surrounding him lately.

My rankings

X2 >> Days of Future Past = First Class >>>>X-Men> The Wolverine >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> X-men 3 > Origins

Sounds great! Can't wait to take my kids this weekend. We just did the X-Gauntlet (yes, I sat through X3 again....) and we're ready to go. My daughter loves comics enough that we're getting her a Marvel Unlimited sub. for her birthday.

Clicked on the spoiler thread on accident. Scrolled down and saw something I really didn't want to see.

I'm not a guy to get worked up over spoilers, especially when it's my own doing, but goddamn

I can't wait for this movie.

UP THERE WITH TERMINATOR AND BACK TO THE FUTURE ?????

*hype reaching critical levels*

Keep in mind that the comparison is entirely based on how I feel that most "time travel" movies, especially blockbusters, spend way too much time trying to justify the reasoning and rules which bogs a movie down. Like the good ones, this doesn't feel the need to over explain or justify why time travel in the show exists, it just does. You accept that, and the narrative is driven by the motivations of the characters and the objectives. Nothing that takes you out of the movie or makes you try to look for loopholes in the rules. It just flows really well, and the editing makes both the past and future feel engaging enough. Very much like the good Terminator films.

I actually think going by critical reception leads to a fairly accurate ranking:

1. X2
2. First Class
3. X-Men
4. The Wolverine (the Japanese flavour actually makes me prefer this to the first film, but I don't think it's as big an accomplishment. Third act problems, as well.)

5. Drinking gasoline and then smoking a cigarette

6. X3
7. Origins

If you go by Rotten Tomatoes scores, X2 and First Class share an 87% rating. First Class has twenty more reviews, though, and a higher audience score too.

Yah. Those two tie. I broke that tie in favour of my own preference.... (and seemingly the consensus? First Class as the best X-Film seems like a minority opinion, but I guess I could be wrong.)

I'm really impressed at how positive the reviews are. I thought people might criticize the time travel or have issues with too many characters, but it seems like the movie is an all around rollicking good time.

FC really isn't a slouch. Its not X2 great, but few films are. Lots of great ideas, a period superhero for a change. Strong cast.

- January Jones.

I'll admit to only seeing ~60% of Origins on FX one night when some friends and I were channel surfing.

It's astounding how crappy that movie turned out.

I give First Class a break because they went from opening shooting to release in less than 10 months. I mean, Jesus, talk about a rush job.

Just got back from watching it as well.

The pacing and direction was great, but it felt something was missing because I wasn't really emotionally invested in the characters. Maybe it's my own fault. But there's nothing much I can nitpick about the movie, everything was quite easy to follow without handholding audiences. Maybe it lacked some sense of scale? Maybe it felt like the movie was just going through it paces? I dunno.

I felt the same way. It was weird cause the acting seemed well but there was some element missing.

I don't think there's an element missing so much as the movie chooses to be what it is. It's both a flaw and a benefit. Days of Future Past is a film so confident in being part of an established X-men movie universe (as shaky as it is) that it doesn't waste any time on establishing a setting, any of the characters, or selling the audience on the character investment.

The end result is that as a stand alone movie it can definitely feel hollow or detached at points, but I think it also totally works in the context of being a result of all the other X-men films building into it. The connect is not as organic as it is in Avengers, because the X-men film universe is a mess, but the casting is so good that it evens out imo.

Additionally, Charles read Erik's mind almost immediately upon encountering him so he always had a pretty good idea of who Erik was, in addition to all of the crap that happened to him over his life. Erik didn't have the same advantage, but it still allowed them to connect more easily. (The audience also gets to see stuff like Erik seeing Charles' mansion for the first time, which may have made Erik grow a bit more distant.)

The scene in FC when Erik unlocks his best childhood memory and Charles thanks him for the opportunity to experience it is one of my favorite parts of the movie.

I think you're right. I didn't watch any of the previous Singer X-Men movies nor read Days of Future Past before. I did like First Class a lot though even with the flaws it had. Maybe fans would get a better kick out of it.

I like the sound of this. Just get right to it, don't waste time on setting up things we already know.

So you've only seen FC and DoFP?

Yup. Though I have to reflect that the past Charles and Erik didn't really seem to have convincing motivations either if I only base it on what I watched in FC. Maybe for me I needed a setup for what happened to them between FC and DoFP.
