I actually really liked first class when I watched it and thought it was the best X-men movie at the time. But recently rewatching both I rate X-2 higher.
So Sculli, what are the chances you'll like this movie?
I would agree if not for the fact that the MCU can't use the term mutant or properly explain who the Maximoff twins are. I don't necessarily need X-Men in my MCU movies, but I do want access to some of the auxiliary characters.MCU fan here and I'm very excited for DoFP. I'm fine with Fox keeping the rights, just keep doing the characters justice, as they seem to be doing with this film.
I don't see how people can put First Class above X2
First Class > Days of Future Past > > X-Men 2 > X-Men > > > > > > > > > Wolverine > > > >Origins Wolverine (Leaked pre-CGI) > > > > > > > Origins Wolverine (Theatrical) > > > X-Men 3
Cause it was the best and didn't have to be hindered by forcing Wolverine down your throat. Plus better characters/actors/tone/story...

Hm? Why is the workprint better than the theatrical?
Hm? Why is the workprint better than the theatrical?
Because its really really good.
Its funny how they show Magneto and Xavier working together for such short time and yet their friendship seems pretty real...
...something that obviously didnt work in Thor, in which thor spend 3 days with natalie portman and decides she is the love of his life
Just how long do you think Mags and X palled around for? We know Thor spent 3 days with Jane. I'd say they spent a good 4-6 months together getting to know each other.

Just got back. Movie delivered. It's probably as good as it gets in terms of adapting Days of Future Past into a live action film with the same continuity and cast from the existing movies. Pretty satisfying. Trask was fantastic. Editing was really good. Not that this would be a particularly high bar, but I think it's probably one of the better made time travel blockbusters out there - reminded me a lot of Terminator 2 in terms of execution.
It's pretty interesting to see the DNA of both X2 and First Class very obviously intertwined into the film's structure. The way mutants and a large cast of characters are used is right out of the X2 playbook, with memorable but short scenes for almost every character, great power showcases, nothing which really bogs down the pace of the film either. The bigger set pieces and the way it uses a period setting is very much First Class influence though. Might be a detriment to those who didn't like how in-your-face the historical references and reimagination of history with X-men in it were, but I thought it was pretty fun, even if some stuff got a bit over the top in scale.
Looks like Bryan Singer still has it as a director. Too bad about all the other stuff surrounding him lately.

UP THERE WITH TERMINATOR AND BACK TO THE FUTURE ?????
*hype reaching critical levels*
*dies*
I actually think going by critical reception leads to a fairly accurate ranking:
1. X2
2. First Class
3. X-Men
4. The Wolverine (the Japanese flavour actually makes me prefer this to the first film, but I don't think it's as big an accomplishment. Third act problems, as well.)
5. Drinking gasoline and then smoking a cigarette
6. X3
7. Origins
If you go by Rotten Tomatoes scores, X2 and First Class share an 87% rating. First Class has twenty more reviews, though, and a higher audience score too.
I know plenty of people who call First Class their favorite X-Men film. It's great.
FC really isn't a slouch. Its not X2 great, but few films are. Lots of great ideas, a period superhero for a change. Strong cast.
- January Jones.
At least she looked good, right?
At some point, Emma is gonna get the actress she deserves.
Just got back from watching it as well.
The pacing and direction was great, but it felt something was missing because I wasn't really emotionally invested in the characters. Maybe it's my own fault. But there's nothing much I can nitpick about the movie, everything was quite easy to follow without handholding audiences. Maybe it lacked some sense of scale? Maybe it felt like the movie was just going through it paces? I dunno.

I don't think there's an element missing so much as the movie chooses to be what it is. It's both a flaw and a benefit. Days of Future Past is a film so confident in being part of an established X-men movie universe (as shaky as it is) that it doesn't waste any time on establishing a setting, any of the characters, or selling the audience on the character investment.
The end result is that as a stand alone movie it can definitely feel hollow or detached at points, but I think it also totally works in the context of being a result of all the other X-men films building into it. The connect is not as organic as it is in Avengers, because the X-men film universe is a mess, but the casting is so good that it evens out imo.

I think you're right. I didn't watch any of the previous Singer X-Men movies nor read Days of Future Past before. I did like First Class a lot though even with the flaws it had. Maybe fans would get a better kick out of it.
How is the 3D?
So you've only seen FC and DoFP?
