Xbox One gets external storage, real name support, auto-sign in w/June system update

For god SAKES, will they just add back the feature to stream my MP3s! It's literally all I want :( Forza is so boring without my music.

You're doing it wrong. Turn off all music when playing Forza, listen to the sounds of the cars.

Nice. I'm glad the auto-login is being added. I still want a swappable internal HDD option, but the external HDD is better than nothing.

You're coming along...not bad MSFT.

Segate has the highest failure rates compared to WD and Toshiba. Toshiba is the most reliable followed closely by WD. The difference in faliure rates between WD/Toshiba and Segate is something like 10-15%, so I would suggest you invest in a Toshiba/WD external.

Why would you want an external HDD when Sony already lets you swap the internal HDD? Am I not seeing something?

I'm happier on having a one-piece PS4 (console), instead of a multiple-piece XBO (console + psu + hdd).

Yes, it's a little bit easier to unplug and plug in a external hard drive than swapping out an internal one. In addition, you don't have to store the OS on it, format it, patch it and who knows what to get it up and running when you swap.

It's kinda like having to swap your internal hard drive for your laptop, formatting the drive, installing OS, patch it, THEN play my movie. Instead of just plugging stuff into my USB port and playing a movie.

Never understood why more options are worse.

I'd rather have the option to do either. Plus having to copy your crap from one drive to the other is a lot more effort than slapping in a USB3 hard drive. I'm sure Sony will give us this option eventually.

Oh and one thing I'll mention to all those buying their external drives for this - 2.5 inch external drives that don't use external power are generally slower in read/write performance than the bigger 3.5 drives that have external power.

Unless your using a SSD in an enclosure of course but that's overkill ;)

Internal HDD is max. 2 TB at the moment
Also the price is roughly double than that of an external 3,5" HDD (Price / TB) which go up to 5 TB atm

Those saying the Kinect sign in is slow are incorrect. It's damn near instant in my case. If you're in sight when you say "Xbox On," you're instantly logged into your profile. If you maybe were out of Kinect's line of sight, which happens to me when I'm on my PC, then the moment you properly present your face where Kinect can see it, you're signed in instantly.

Only explanation I can gather for why it may take too long for some is if Kinect isn't calibrated correctly, or if there's some other kind of interference.

Both have their advantages. Replaceable internal drive means less clutter. External means:

  • more than one at a time
  • you to keep the initial 500gb
  • no need to worry about transferring everything if you've already used it awhile
  • can opt for cheaper/larger drives (which you may already have laying around)
  • can pick it up and take it to a friends place

Personally, I'd prefer internal simply because I don't really care about any of the external advantages. But it's not as simple as one being outright better than the other.

What would be nice, would be to have both options.

Same. It's even funny when it once-in-a-blue moon logs my wife in when it sees my daughter mistakenly. But overall it logs me in very fast.

Everyone is talking drives, but I like the real name options too. Sadly you can't make it show up in games. I wish you could.

Awesome! I'm not going to use the Real Name tho, my friends are the handles to me now online.

Also I really hope they get the boot to TV in this release.

I used to have a 2TB MyBook until it crapped out on me. Switched to a 4TB USB 3.0 Seagate for $170. Love it so far.

Damn. I couldn't imagine even filling up a 1TB HDD. I did just buy one though thanks to this news. I have tons and tons of Steam games for example and my 1TB HDD isn't near fully with that and all the music I have stored on it.

Finally that auto-sign in returns

That useless kinect auto sign-in was useless and slow.

It works really well for me. I walk into my living room behind my couch and by the time I come around and sit down I'll be logged in. I'm surprised how much it does work even in low light.

I'm doing the download only thing and my HDD is already half full. I'll be adding a 3TB hard drive I have sitting doing nothing as soon as I get this update.

I presume that by "copy" they actually mean "move"? It would be amazing if you could make backup copies of your digital games on multiple hard drives, that would solve the problem of preservation of digital Xbox One games, which is one of the main things keeping me from going fully digital, but I doubt they would allow that because of piracy and sharing concerns. Can any Microsoft Gaffer clarify?
even if they do they mean that what's to stop you from downloading it again to another hard drive/ you xb1?

Perhaps I'm missing something here but would it be possible to load up an HDD with digital games, give it to your friend and if he has your account info then play those games while you play them on your own XB1? That may be prevented by the whole "Home console" thingie but I'm not 100% sure. Anyone have some insight/clarification?

The UI in the video and what they say over the video specifically says, "move" to the external hard drive. Not copy. However, you will be able to copy games off the hard drive to another person's Xbox One eliminating the download if that person wants to keep a game because games are tied to your account and not the system.

I'm having a hard time holding off on ordering a HDD from Amazon, but I want to wait to see if MS comes out with a list of supported devices.

What more do you need to know besides any drive at least 250GB in size and USB 3.0? I'd get one with external power just to be on the safe side.

I suppose if you didn't want to log into your XB1 at home for a while that would work.

you wouldn't be able to play online on your console since he would have to be signed into your account on his. unless you set your home console to his. You can already do that though; it has nothing to do w/ external storage.

Skifta or similar apps on your phone/tablet can help - you can use them to control a DLNA server and play it on your Xbox. Maybe not perfect if you want to browse from Xbox, but better than needing to be at your PC

Yeah, it's just a bummer to have feature regressions; it's more for kids than myself, really, they're generally not permitted to touch my PC, but they're very accustomed to navigating to various ballet and video game OSTs that they enjoy dancing to.

Didn't realize Skifta had an iOS version, though, thought it was Android only, will check that out, thanks.

I'll hook up a 4TB drive, that should be enough for a while! I'd rather switch out the internal drive, though, but at least we don't have to deal with overpriced HDD's now.

From my experience I only get logged in when I'm actually holding the controller, even in the kinect line of sight.

i have to say as a ps4 owner that seeung ms improve their os tenfold whilst sony seems to rest on their laurels is infuriating. sony should be doing the exact same thing as ms here.
This. Its baffling to be honest. Probably why my bone gets more love right now. Software > *
