Xbox One gets external storage, real name support, auto-sign in w/June system update

Yup. The modular design of the OS is showing how useful it can be with all these quick updates. For instance, Skype is snappable now and didn't require an OS update. Certain things seem better tied to the OS, though, like the party chat and invite system which works better on 360 and PS4.

The PS4 invite and party system wishes it was the 360 invite and party system....but at least it has them.

Windows Phone beta has it to. I checked after a reply made to me earlier.

ah, ok. I just went back and checked the post from 4/1 and it said:

Reorder your pins – Go to the Pins Hub in SmartGlass to drag and drop the order of your pins on the Xbox One console (This feature is currently available only on the Android version of the SmartGlass update preview, for now.)

guess they added it to Windows/Phone later

Have they said if the external HDD needs to be self powered or will the console power the HDD? I know on the WiiU it had to be a self powered HDD. Just need to know before placing my order. I have 2 Xbox One's in my house and don't want to order 2 incorrect HDD's.

3,5" External HDD cannot be self powered. The USB Port just does not give enough juice in its specification.

2,5" Should work (minus some minor power-hungry hdd types).

I'm not sure to be honest -- They updated the preview registration app to allow you to invite friends, but I invited a few gaffers who requested it and I don't think they ever got anything

Yeah, I think the preview forums mentioned at some point that no one else would be invited for the time being. I'm not sure if that was before or after the invite button showed up, though.

I did not read all the comments in the thread, but looking at some I am surprised no one mentioned this (if someone did, I apologize)....

Was anyone else expecting, even slightly that when they mentioned external storage that they were going to stick it to us and make their own external HD's and charge up the nose for it? Part of me was expecting that because that is what MS has done in the past.

I was on Newegg the other day and you can get up to 5tb HDD now and the fact that you can have 2 of them connected is even better for those that have extra drives laying around and don't want to buy new ones.

This is such a great addition to the console. Now to decide what HDD to get! :)
In all seriousness, if SONY wasn't around you better believe they would. Competition is the main driving force behind a lot of the decisions that are made for both companies. Exactly why all the morons clamoring for MS to fail should be careful what they wish for...

Will this work now with Sky HD so that I never need to see their UI again?

Yes but the oneguide isn't great - only shows around 4-5 channels rather than the 8 on my TiVo for instance, so browsing can be slow - especially by voice. Using the smartglass app might be more useful, but then I already have the TiVo app which is great - TVs guides work really well on a tablet.

I might buy the media remote see if that helps - or is there a harmony profile that can control the navigation on the Xbox one?

It also needs 'boot to Tv' soon, as my wife is getting increasingly impatient at having to fiddle with things just to watch TV

So no improvements to browse-ability of media shares for DLNA? It's pretty absurd I have to initiate this stuff from my PC.

Skifta or similar apps on your phone/tablet can help - you can use them to control a DLNA server and play it on your Xbox. Maybe not perfect if you want to browse from Xbox, but better than needing to be at your PC

I haven't tried it, but harmony has official support for xbox one

Thanks to Targets crazy trade in deals I will be picking up a 4TB hard drive "free" for this very reason :)

I have about $300 in Target credit and up until I read your post, I did not even think about going to Target to get a External HDD. lol. That just save me some real bucks! Thanks! :)

For god SAKES, will they just add back the feature to stream my MP3s! It's literally all I want :( Forza is so boring without my music.

Thanks, will take a look. Voice is cute for channel changing, but some channels are unreliable, and voice for volume etc is just silly, so a combo of voice + remote is probably better

Targets selection sucks though and prices are pretty high. They have a Seagate 2tb for $149.99 while Amazon has a 4tb Seagate for the same price.

Because clearly adding features that are already on PS4 is beating Sony. And no adding external storage support is not better than the ability to change your internal storage to whatever size you want but it will be a welcome addition when Sony adds it to PS4.

Its funny reading these threads, with every update Microsoft releases you see these comments. Most of the update features are things that were on PS4 from day 1.

Sony needs to fix the stuff they broke in the last update. And where is suspend/resume games?

Still intrigued by "hero stats" ... especially because I have been thinking that Microsoft shoud upgrade its achievement system, that number is absolutely meaningless today.

With Xbox Rewards, we get cash back for achievements earned each month on both Xbox systems. We also get cash back for any money spent on the marketplace.

I know the Xbone's OS was pretty half baked at launch and really was probably rushed given all the 180's, and there was a lot more room for early improvement on their end than Sony....but I've got to hand it to MS...they have been pumping out quality, large updates to the OS on a real consistent basis...

Sony needs to step their game up...

External storage, welcome. I don't get involved with the real names aspect. If I know you, then I know you, and your gt/psnid/etc.

With regards to real name support, I pray there isn't a bug or hiccup that accidentally reveals everyone's real name without their permission. Would be really inconvenient for people to find out I've been Bill Gates this entire time. :P

Which would have been quite easy to play off as a coincidence without this post...

External storage is fantastic to hear about, might just take the plunge on a huge HDD and not have to worry about storage for the rest of the gen, as I'm already 50% full on my XBO right now.

Real name support is one of my favorite things on the PS4, glad they're adopting that. And auto-sign in is great as well, even though Kinect sort of does that anyways right now.

You secret is safe with me, Billy.
