As excited as I am for the invitational, I really can't shake the feeling that something is going to go terribly wrong with it. I mean, Nintendo went from nearly shutting down the EVO tournament last year to suddenly becoming MLG partners and hosting their own Smash tournament.

I just can't help but feel just a bit skeptical about the whole thing. Obviously though, I'd love to be proven wrong and this whole thing goes on without a hitch and ends up being a great event, possibly even leading to more tournaments like this.

Until they prove anything else, I'm guessing every invited contestant is either a games-journalist or a big youtube personality.

Oh, I know why people prefer Melee and have no qualms with that at all. I'm just curious as to how they're going to take the new game. Hopefully it's more competitive.

It doesn't need much to be more competitive. Tripping's already gone so all it needs is tight controls and a workable amount of hitstun and we're golden. It doesn't need to be capable of OMGZCUMBOOZ for most people to accept it but some comboing does need to be possible.

What I don't understand is how the 16 contestants were chosen. Was it through the fighting game tournament (that Nintendo forbid, then allowed) that happened last year? Was it through some Japan-only tournament (probably more likely)? What can regular people like us DO to get in to the top 16?

This is great nonetheless. It should be an exciting show. I'll be livestreaming it of course since I don't have the time nor the money to fly out to Los Angeles and stand in line for a chance to be a part of the audience.

Sorry guys, totally forgot I posted that. Yeah I won't give out serious hints, but I can say that a variety of players will be represented (sponsored/not sponsored, younger/older, guys/girls, Melee/PM/Brawl Players etc). I see a lean towards Melee players but I do believe that's because I'm in the Melee circles and not the overall Smash or Brawl circles.

Many of the players you guys can predict, but there are a few surprises for the people that don't know the community personally.

Of the 7 you know, do we have multi-game representatives yet?

I think everyone that knows the community will be impressed and happy with the selections. At least of the ones I know.
