Amplitude (Harmonix) PS3/PS4 - KS (Funded, final day)

Sony own the IP which makes the whole thing sleazy as shit.

Why is it being crowd sourced in the first place if Sony is so invested in trying to get it funded? Oh look Sony's blog is telling people to fund it and the yosp fucker is tweeting about how he's giving $2k. I don't trust this to all be legit. I wouldn't be surprised if a large number of the backers are hundreds of accounts Sony made and donated $20 just to save face. It's a Sony first party game pretending to be an indie title.

That part is speculation though. I don't like to speculate too much.

Your posts don't make sense

I'm with you, it's really sort of shady and I think we're going to see more of this once this funds.

If this was truly an indie passion project, if Sony really didn't want anything to do with it, why didn't Harmonix pitch a spiritual sequel with a different title that they could have more freedom with? Nope. This is a Sony IP appearing on only Sony systems and being promoted by Sony. It's the first corporate-sponsored Kickstarter game and it's probably going to open the doors for others to follow.

And Insomniac's totally in on the deal, using it to promote a Microsoft published game by putting a Sunset Overdrive song in the game.

So I guess we've established MS is going to sell XBox division to Sony, and Sony's paying for it with old Rock Band codes. There's goes the big E3 surprise, thanks.

Came to thread to see what's up with reaching the goal. Been chuckling at the backlash, loved this response.

EDIT: Well thank god that guy is gone. This is time for partying!
Yep! Posts were rubbish.

They talked about this in their stream yesterday - they could have made a generic "spiritual" successor but they were clear that they wanted to this to very much remain AMPLITUDE, and that includes keeping the name and working on it with Sony, who was the one that allowed them to make the first one in the first place.

It's interesting to see that the pledge total sometimes drops a couple of hundred dollars. It seems that backers who pledged large amounts of money retract their pledge because this kickstarter is so close to finish line that additional monetary support is not needed.

I used to face button until I realized how needlessly hard I was making it on myself.

I did too, until the difficulty in Frequency made that pretty much impossible. I could never get the hang of L1/R2/R2 so eventually I tried the combo(L1/Triangle/R1 I think is what I used) and it was the best way for me to play.

Why no Vita? They've already said in FAQ its a stretch goal.
They say it's unlikely, not that the stretch goal doesn't exist, so that probably means the amount of extra funding it would need is way above what they think is possible in 22 hours. The Vita stretch goal is probably at least 1-1,1 million, probably/possibly even more.

A different title and spiritual sucessor wouldn't change the fact that EBM music racers are a very niche market. Nobody would chance it without something like this.

Goodnight, sweet Dave. I assume it was because insulting other gaffers and making up tinfoil-hat conspiracy theories doesn't fly.

Sooooo close. I'm so happy the game's getting funded. My only experience with Frequency was when it was on a demo disc on the old PlayStation Magazines
(Hours of Britney Spears Dance Central and NBA Street, what the hell was I doing as a kid?)
, so I hope the game does well so I can get the full experience.

That's what I'm thinking.

And if they wanted to work with Sony, Sony should have funded it.

It's just strange to me, I guess. I don't know if big corporations should be involved in crowd-funding.

Anyway, I'm not going to drag this out while everyone is celebrating, perhaps a discussion on big corporations being involved with crowd-funding can be a separate thread after the dust settles here, I think it'll be an interesting topic to watch and discuss.

We're not funding Sony. We're funding Harmonix. Sony championed the campaign for self-interest of course as it will be Playstation exclusive game without them needing to fund its development. But Sony won't have any part on the sales revenue because of that. I for one am excited at the possibilities this campaign opens.

Yes, yes, the amazing success story of the failed IP that somehow managed to barely make enough money to reach the goal will open the door for others to follow. Next up, Call of Duty.

That makes no sense though.

It's a dormant Sony IP appearing on Sony systems (because it's a Sony IP) and being promoted by Sony (who have never advertised indie games before, right?) made by and published by the original developer who are "leasing" the IP from Sony and using Kickstarter to fund it because Sony would not.

I am not sure how a game that wouldn't otherwise get made getting made is bad.

Vib Ribbon? Jumping Flash? G-Police?

How many old, forgotten Sony IPs could be resurrected via indies and Kickstarter?

The only way I can think of it getting a Vita port is if the game is enough of a commercial success to justify one. I doubt the Vita is getting one at release.

Sony doesn't only own the IP, but also some of the mechanics. Hence it will be difficult to get around the IP and make a game in the same vain.

Maybe they don't think Vita is a good fit without L2/R2? Heck, put the money towards more music then.
They could use a variation of DJ Max's control scheme -- notes on left/up/right and square/triangle/circle for 1/2/3, L/R to switch tracks and down/X to use a power-up.

(btw, for those asking - we're going to drop our first stretch goal after we cross the funding line/finish this stream)

I'll create a new thread on this topic later as to not poo poo the good news in here, so this will be my last response in this thread..

This is just sad. There's nothing shady about it. Harmonix wants to do it, Sony doesn't want to publish it due to bad sales in the past. Sony, however, gives Harmonix the option to use the IP if they can get the funding themselves. Harmonix crunches the numbers and figures out how much they can put their own money into it and deduces that they need about 800k from crowd funding to make it a reality.

Harmonix then put up the Kickstarter and Sony promoted it just like they've promoted a ton of other Kickstarters because it will potentually give Sony platforms more games and it gives them positive PR in the eyes of many gamers that they are so willing to promote the underdogs and not just lick the asses of Ubisoft, EA and other big publishers.

That's not shady, it's just wise business.

I want to back this, but locking away in-game content at the $100 level is not really sitting well with me.

First off, your username is so appropriate right now. Anyway, this is something I was also concerned about. But I got the feeling based on what they've said on livestream that at least the song would probably be offered as paid DLC down the line. The exclusive beat blaster is something that doesn't personally bother me because it's just a cosmetic thing that isn't really important to the gameplay at all.

Mighty No. 9.

...is a different game involving different companies with a different IP and different contracts.

Dude they've already explained why they had to go this route before. There is no "corporate-sponsored" conspiracy theory going on. If you don't like it, you don't have to support it.

If they open champagne during this livestream, I look forward to people whining about:

- Why did they waste money on pies instead of lowering the funding amount?
- Why are they buying champagne if they need Kickstarter money?

EDIT: LOL they DO have champagne!!!

I'm not counting JP developers since they have not yet discovered the internet. Also would be too expensive.
