X-Men: Days of Future Past |OT| aka The Last Stand aka First Class 2 aka Wolverine 6

Wow, I'm doing a series re watch and I forgot how awkward some parts of First Class are. The whole, "pick our names," scene is so laughably bad, and some of the CG doesn't hold up (not quite X-Men Origins level bad, but sometimes close).

That being said, the movie itself is still pretty good, and I'm looking forward to DOFP sometime this weekend.

The whole premise is pretty convenient. I mean most time travel stories are. They transfer consciousness through time but it breaks the brain, but a healing brain might survive? I can forgive that, especially if it were handled well and more naturally (ie instead of standing around and talking, have it play out a bit more first) - I get it, they want to set up the rules and get it out of the way to tell the real story, but there were a lot more of this kind tuff in this film.

Want to add some drama, requiring wolverine to actually convince prof X without mind-reading? Ok prof x doesn't have his powers. Which he conveniently gets back when the time arises, and by choice. Again, if more naturally played out perhaps not so bad, but I wasn't convinced that he was that "broken".

Talking to future prof x through wolverine? Again, awfully convenient.

Breaking magneto out - how do we do that? Wolverine: oh, hey I know a guy.

You know. And so on.

Just quite a lot for me. I still thought the movie was fine overall, but not great.

Ok. I think we have different definition of what plot conveniences are. To me it is what happens in Godzilla: the main character falls in the exact place at the exact time, multiple times. Sheer luck out of nothing. Things happen the right way for no reason at all. Deus Ex Machina.

Most of you wrote is explained in the movie, it makes sense within the context of it. They don't happen out of nowhere because of luck or coincidence. Are there cliches/tropes in them? Yes. They are what I'd call plot devices. Maybe I understand the terms wrongly.

I will give you the the last one. Thinking like that, it is what I consider a plot convenience. But it didn't bother me because what happened after it was ace. =P
 
I have come from the FYUCHAH.

And the FYUCHAH is good! Singer should exclusively direct X-Men movies from now on, it truly is what he does best. It was super fun filled with good spectacle and character moments. Quicksilver haters gonna have to eat their words and a lot more (including myself, maybe, I don't remember :P), his scene was probably the highlight of the movie.
 
X-Files, Xbox and X-Men - this brave new world suffers from a surfeit of X's. For those of you who think that X indicates buried treasure this latest instalment is probably best avoided.

Wolvie doesn't wear one in the DoFP comic so it's actually justified for once.

The First Class costumes were really close to Morrison/Quitely's New X-Men, though.
 
Well was going to say I was wrong about Pietro and apologize for that portion but the mocking and misquoting makes me feel like I shouldn't.

Well, I will.

Sorry. Quicksilver does stick to his comic form. My bad.

I did like that in First Class they went with the blue and gold instead of black. And I especially love that the movies give them uniforms. Cause by gawd, the X-Men should wear uniforms!

Yeah maybe we have different definitions.

Yes they can be explained away easily. Things that can't be explained to me are plot holes.

A plot convenience to me is something that is obviously just written for the sole purpose to set something up, and very loosely just explained. Like its simply explained away and that's that. Yes it can fit the context, but it's generally not a satisfactorily set up plot device.

Like wolverine being the one to go back. The explanation is very weak and may as well have been "just because ... Wolverine".

an example of a plot device that is actually done well and fits with the premise was, say, using mystique as the assassin of Trask. I mean in concept, it could be any bad guy, but by developing the plot to require her DNA as an advancement point for the sentinels is tied in well and feels like there's a reason to use her

Again, I can handle a few. Too many and it just becomes very apparent.

Yup. It's still a little subdued, but the art people pay attention to where it's needed. They got rid of Cat Beast after all!

I'm sorry, but I can never take people's praise of Beast in First Class seriously.

Are you saying I praised it? Because I didn't. :P

They nailed it with DoFP Beast though.

HOWEVER: There are mutants that do look grotesque and possibly don't possess any powers. I'd like to see more of them in the movies since they are the ones the X-Men are fighting for.
 
Don't know when I'll get to see this, probably not this weekend, but maybe next. Anyway, I'm excited with all the good word on it. X2 is still the best superhero movie until I see this. First Class was alright, I had some stuff to really like, and some other bits that were not so good.

I would have it as X2 > X1 > DOFP > TW = X3 > FC > XOW

I actually don't have a problem with X1, i actually think if they combined the first half of X1 with all of X2 we'd be on a real winner.

And likewise with X3, yes it's the weakest in the trilogy and killing off Xavier, Cyclops and Jean was a bit ugh... but it's not the worst movie ever.
 
It's looking like this is going to end up being the most critically acclaimed of the X-Men movies, both in terms of the aggregate score, as well as the levels of enthusiasm. That said, it's interesting to see very few people ITT ranking it as the best in the franchise.

Predictably, X2 is still king for a lot of people... but it seems some others are ranking it behind the original film and First Class as well. I wasn't expecting that. Are the critics just falling victim to lowered expectations?

I'm definitely interested (and a bit anxious) to see where it falls for me. My screening starts in two hours...
 
Just got back, great movie. I need to watch X2 again to be sure, but this might be the best X-men movie.
 
Bloody incredible movie.

But can someone refresh my memory...did I miss it or did I NOT see a Stan Lee cameo?

Edit: Googled...turns out no cameo. Odd.
 
Oh buddy. Def one of the best movie experiences in a while. It panders to the audience at times and I took it fully. Haven't enjoyed a comic book movie like that since x-2 or spidey 2.

Agreed. Dinklage didn't bring anything to the character. (On the other hand, the script is also to blame since there was no back story or motivation for Dinklage's character)

Personally I thought the movie was allright. It was generally strong, had an incredible Quicksilver sequence that was the highlight of the movie, but it ran out of steam at the end. For a movie with such high odds, there was no real suspense, I really didn't care for what happened to the characters in the future. The movie should have been substantially longer to add depth to those characters, because a number of them were no more than glorified cameos.
