So...evil laughs *are* real?

I don't know what else to say really. But I do send my thoughts and prayers to the families of those affected by the incident.

Anyone else feel this is a watershed moment in certain aspects of internet culture? I read about this earlier today on a news website, immediately thought of 4chan and promptly went there to multiple threads about him on several different boards.

He seems to exemplify a twisted parody of the toxic brew of fedora tipping, alpha beta, manlet, inadequate male shaming that exists in certain pockets of the internet. It honestly sounds like satire until you realise he was serious.

Yea it really put things in perspective. Usually I find that type of posting to just be trolling, but maybe not anymore.

Without a shadow of a doubt.

It's a toxic environment encouraging a vicious cycle of misogyny where, instead of dealing with issues, they receive reinforcement that nothing is their fault and women are the root of all their problems.

This wouldn't be so bad if siloed, but they then step outside into a society filled to the brim with the results of similar thinking. From our media, to our social heirerachy, to our politics - the traces are all there.

Feel really bad for the victims and families. This is a very sad story all around, feel bad for the perpetrator as well. Just terrible, mental illness is no joke.

Wonder why he stabbed his housemates rather than shooting them. Maybe to avoid drawing attention?

He said he would do it while they were asleep so I'm assuming it was so the other wouldn't wake up which would allow him to kill them all.

He had this shit planned out.

I'm kind of shocked that anyone takes his "creepy" videos at face value. They are so obviously the result of a zero-charisma nerd trying to sound like an anime villain.

More to the point how did he do it without a fuss, were they sleeping or what?

He actually says in the manifesto that he was going to hit them in the head with a hammer then stab them while they sleep. Dunno if that's how he did it but obviously he was planning to avoid resistance.

That kid must be feeling a crazy wave of emotions right now.

I can't even imagine. There has to be a part of him that's relieved his brother didn't make it to him, combined with the anger and sadness of the tragedy. Must be fucking horrible. I'd hate to go through that.

This whole thing is just depressing.

"the media" usually reports on what people want to know about.

Why not blame all the people posting in this 1500+ post thread? Guys lock the thread and cease discussion so history forgets him!

I've never agreed with the "we should ban the names of every killer" mentality.

Where the media does go wrong IMO is in completely obsessive focus on the perpetrator of an act past the facts and rational analysis, in order to pump for ratings at that point. Victims often become secondary to the "sexier" angles. And the media tends to fall back on outrage farming the low-hanging fruit rather than real investigation. (How long until there's multiple reports on this kid playing video games, clearly murder simulators get results?)

I realize the common fear relates to encouraging copycat acts. But I'm not sure how effective censorship really is for that. People who are looking for trouble are going to find it. Refusing to document reality doesn't really improve society in the long run, but addressing underlying problems may. In the case of this kid, it seems that society's misogyny and warped ideals of manhood and sex did far more to contribute fodder than the names of historical murderers being known to the public.

Who ever done the interview was clearly unqualified.

edit,
"police found him timid and courteous"

That's really not a fair statement at all. Some of the most successful mass murderers could be quite deceptive in their presentation to people they weren't obsessing over. His hatred rose to the surface whenever he saw love that he could not have.

He probably was calm and somewhat rational when in front of the police. Most psychopathic killers have what has been termed a "mask of sanity"

I think that's what's creepy about them. It would be easy to dismiss them as the silly ramblings of some sad nerd, but he actually is a villain.

crazy to think of the reactions on here if that video was posted before he actually carried it out and we knew he was serious

This is what I was talking about when I posted that.

Reading through bits and pieces of the manifesto...

I wonder if he ever shared his thoughts with anyone close? His entire world view is so utterly distorted and unhealthy, that even without the killing and murdering, it would've lead to tragedy in one way or another.

This is an act of deep depression, borne from a fundamentally misaligned world view of wretched romanticism; a self centered egotistical view of the world, with the fates aligning for him - when proven to be false, and all his plans come undone, left at wits end, he lashes out in the only way of significance that he knows how.

A badly acted and tone deaf "villain rant" isn't validated just because he pulled the trigger. This ain't the Joker. It's a geek.

By the sound of it he called his mother crying several times after 'incidents' (read: seeing happy couples enjoying themselves). She raised the alarm, got him therapy, called the police for a housecheck etc.

Good point. was thinking the same thing about his "appearing to be sane", being all shy and timid when he wanted to be. But fuck.. guns need to be controlled alot better in the states.. one way or another, for everyones sake.

So now we have a maniac that got therapy? People knew he was messed. The cops were called and he still was able to get ahold of a firearm and go on a spree?

What was that thread awhile back where the guy said that his roommate got furious when he could hear the people upstairs having sex? It's the first thing that came to mind. Hope it wasn't him :/

I thought you disagreed with the majority of the rhetoric the NRA puts out and thought they were going about things in a bad way. Am I misremembering or have you changed your mind?

I don't think bashing the NRA is an acceptable in this situation. Of course I disagree with the NRA on some things but the notion that they're at fault for why guys like this do what they do just doesn't resonate with me.

Personally I believe when someone has a slew of youtube video's up and leaves a murder manifesto up they should have the cops come grab them and force them into involuntary commitment and get a judge up (even in the middle of the night) to adjudicate the person as incompetent and keep them locked up until they get treatment.

But if they didn't see the videos they wouldn't be aware of what he was threatening. Do I think seriously disturbed individuals should be institutionalized and have their gun rights pulled? Yes. But the reason that's not the case isn't the NRA no matter how much some may claim. There really don't set rules to how this works. I think the whole "OMG if only nra would not oppose things!" really sells the conversation short.

I remember that, oh man...

What is a douchechill?
It's the feeling you get when watching Star Wars Episode II when Anakin basically cries and begs for sex. "I don't like sand" etc.

I get the same feelings from this "creepy" video.
