2016+ Gaming Laptop Thread: Embracing Pascal's Wafer (Please Read OP)

I was referring to what I bolded in your post. You said you wanted a quiet laptop but Clevo are probably the loudest of all of the gaming laptop brands. I say you just go for the Lenovo. The Lenovo is actually a little bit lighter than the Clevo too if weight makes any factor at all.

Yeah I heard about the fan issue.. But I heard that was fixed through a patch of some sort..

Still browsing as I'm not sure I want to drop 1,100+ on a laptop when I do have a desktop that works fine for home.

Well the reason I'm asking is because I haven't shopped for a laptop in around a decade so I have no idea what prices are like for certain features. How much does it cost to stick with Windows 7 in a laptop (the only W7 laptops Dell still sells are Alienware)? How much extra does it typically cost to get a laptop with an SSD? And surprisingly, even if I only wanted to install the odd indie game here and there, a lot of the low-end ones surprisingly don't run on integrated graphics, but ask for at least a low-tier dedicated GPU.

Edit: Wait, can you actually just put an SSD into a laptop? Or are there certain kinds and compatibilities?

For Windows 7, you'd have to buy a copy, find all of your notebbooks drivers, and reinstall yourself.

For SSD, you'd have to decide what size you want, the larger ones obviously
being the most expensive. Installing an SSD is very simple in the majority of laptops.

For gaming, today's integrated graphics can play pretty much any indie game.

gathered my thoughts a little better (low end laptops are quite a minefield to pick out decent value). looking for a family laptop mainly for the kids. homework plus basic gaming - primarily minecraft. Keeping it below £500 would be ideal.

Thinking that a 4200M and 4200U should both be enough power for general use, but the 4200U should be with dedicated graphics as otherwise it gets clocked down due to the limited TDP. 4200M should have a faster IGP and be able to use it better due to the higher TDP of that chip.

options (in order of price):
1) Lenovo G510 £429
i5-4200M
Integrated graphics (but being the 4200m this shoudl be the HD4600 which should be ok for basic gaming?)
4GB RAM (can upgrade myself)
15" 1366x768
notes: slightly faster CPU than the 4200U and acceptable GPU?

2) Lenovo Z510 £499 link
i5-4200M
GT740m 1GB (says DDR3 for GPU ram though. eww)
4GB ram (easily upgraded)
15" 1366x768

3) Lenovo G510 £537
i7-4700MQ
Integrated graphics (should be the HD4600 which should be ok for basic gaming?)
8GB RAM (can upgrade myself)
15" 1366x768
notes: fastest CPU and acceptable GPU but worth £100 over the i5 4200m?

Always take the fastest GPU, in this case the GT 740M.

Primary use is for travel and hanging out with friends instead of being stuck on Skype with my desktop.

So why buy a gaming laptop? Do you need to game away from home much?

How long the laptop will last depends on what you intend to play.

You can get a Sager cheap that is easily upgradeable in comparison to most other laptops on the market..

I was tooling around on Sager's sight and came to one around 1000$ but it had an i7 -4810 instead and an nvidia 850m instead.

To the post above, (sorry on my at work dont know how to quote both posts) because thats the primary thing ill be using it for is for games. I mostly play mmos with friends as we both just started GW2 and play when we get off work via skype.

Bought the Y50 with a $100 discount code, but I'm not sure how I feel about it.. It will be a nice addition, but I'm hoping I made the right choice over the Sager considering the latter has more powerful specs..

You can get one with an i7 4700 and 860m for roughly $988 but it won't have an OS.. It's a perfect time to load Ubuntu though, if you desire..

How much difference between an i3-4110m at 2.6Ghz, and an i5-4210m at 2.6Ghz? Just the turbo boost on the i5? Trying to shave a few pounds and if an i3 is a reasonable option I could go that direction.

PC specialist.co.uk have the cosmos II (apparently a Clevo 650Sj) with i3, 8Gb, 500GB SSHD and GTX850m 2GB for £575. GPU seems a big bump from a gt740m so if this is a good choice I might consider stretching the budget

Budget: $1100 (will do 12 and change if the laptop is really worth the extra bit)

The most demanding games I play are DayZ SA and Warframe, so I don't need anything too crazy; those are also really the only "new" games I play on PC. With the ones I'm looking at I may be extending a bit more than I need at the moment, but I'm a tight-wad that'll hold onto this laptop until it's falling apart, so I want some security that it won't be completely useless for games three years from now. The TigerDirect store near me had this MSI, but that bumps right over my budget and is basically the same as this Clevo. They also had an MSI with an 870M and a 250gb SSD for like $1700, but that doesn't seem worth it at all.

Are the Clevos really shotty quality or are they passable? I travel relatively frequently so I do need something that, at the very least, won't melt/disintegrate if it gets a bump on the side every now and then.

I'm open to any suggestions.

I wouldn't go with anything lower than an 860M.

The i3 and 850M would be the wiser combo to take. It is indeed a large amount faster than the 740M, and you never see as large of a dividend from choosing the faster CPU.

My biggest issues with Clevo, are that the speakers are crap, and the sound quality you get out of the headphone jack is laughable. Outside of those two, the machines are just utilitarian.

Are they sturdy enough? This needs to last my kids at least three years, and although I can get a warranty, I'd also like at least some reassurance that it shouldn't need it. Otherwise I'd be tempted to go for the slower but hopefully nicer to live with lenovo

AFAIK, all laptop brands have a failure rate of 10-20% within a relatively short time (maybe 5 years). Even the best brands, including Apple laptops. I remember reading it in a Consumer Reports a few years ago, I don't think it's changed too too much. Either way, point is, laptops have a significantly higher failure rate than desktops, and I believe extended warranties are never a bad thing to buy when it comes to laptops, unless you know you'll be replacing it for a new one soon after the warranty expires.

5 years is actually a pretty long time to reach 10-20% failure rate. I suppose damage that's obviously the user's fault is excluded from those numbers. Still, even a careful laptop user will unavoidably put a laptop under some stress in mobile use, and a lot of people are anything but careful.

A laptop which lasts 5 years is a success. But laptops always seem to have an issue right after the warranty runs out, which is why I recommend upgrading to 2 years on a $1k+ investment.

Clevos are built well enough to last for a long time, they just have cheap amenities.

That is the truth, my laptop's DC jack is acting up and now I have to replace it manually because it's way too expensive to get it done by someone else.

I should change my profession to laptop repair man, $150 for changing a freaking plug!? It's insane.

I've also heard that the fans on Celvos go ham like 24/7. If I can, should I just shell out the extra $200ish for the MSI and save myself from the four years+ of little annoyances like loud fans and shit speakers?

There's really no perfect answer, in this $1k to $1.2k price range.

Clevo has mediocre speakers and headphone jack power, while the the GE60 and Y50 both have good to great speakers, but poor touchpads.

The GE60 has the higher gaming temps of the bunch.

Clevo has by far the worst idle fan profiles of the bunch.

Y50 has the worst touchpad, which matters if you don't primarily use an external mouse.

The GE60 Apache Pro has a Samsung PLS (same technology as IPS) display, and the best keyboard. Those may justify the extra spent over the Clevo. If you're buying from XoticPC, you might as well spend an additional $35 for the IC Diamond Thermal Compound.

The Y50 is the thinnest and lightest.

I received my MSI GE60 Apache Pro-003 yesterday from UPS. I gotta say, I'm enjoying it a lot. The screen on this thing is beautiful. It's so crystal clear and vibrant. The keyboard feels great with its rubbery keys. I like that I can customize the lights on the keyboard to whatever I like, whether it be a wave style or it pulses to music. One thing I didn't expect to blow me away were the speakers. I turned up some music and my jaw dropped. I just didn't expect this kind of sound out of a laptop! The laptop isn't overly heavy and the screen-size is just right for video editing/gaming. I was going to go with an ASUS G750-JM, but I decided against because of the size and weight of it. I knew I was taking a hit on the temps, by going with this laptop, but I had to compromimse for the size/weight difference. I was underwhelmed by the touchpad. It's just not sensitive enough. Luckily, I can just plug up a mouse and ignore it. The case is sleek, but I already see a ton of finger prints. The build quality feels very solid. The only game I tried so far was Arma 3 and it ran smoothly (as much as an Arma game can). Above the keyboard, there are two buttons for turning off the keyboard light and I guess some kind of extra fan or something. I haven't quite figured that out. The only issue I've had is registering this thing with MSI for the warranty. I bought it in very-good condition from Amazon's Warehouse Deals. Anyway, it seems like a great laptop so far.

Yes, MSI uses the best laptop speakers in the business.

I'm glad you're liking it. The amenities such as the speakers and great keyboard are why I usually recommend MSI machines.

Fyi, the button above the keyboard is Cooler Boost, which sets the fans to maximum for gaming.

Is that something I should turn on every time I game? Or just when the computer gets so hot I can't stand it?

Also, this thing doesn't run as well on battery (Is this a no duh thing?). The power plan is on high performance. Is it throttling?

You should use the max fan when you feel the temps are too high.

Gaming on battery? Impossible, because a 75W GPU and a 45W CPU are too much for current batteries to power alone. Both components are throttled if the machine isn't plugged in. There are ways to get them to run at full speed, but you'd just be killing (literally) the battery, quickly.

Hello everyone!

I was thinking of buying this laptop next month and wanted some input on my possible decision.

http://www.fona.dk/elektronik/elekt...tommer-bærbar-pc-n56jr-s4006h&id=0-4404231040

Personally I want to have a computer I¨d be able to have with me outside/to school, i.e that it looks sleek and professional, not a black chunk, neither a flashy mess.

I think this provides a good middle point between actually being able to play games on it and it looking good. It costs about 1460 USD.

hey guys,

does someone here has a Sony Vaio SVF1532Z1EB ?
maybe writen differently, ist from the fit e series.
i7 proc., 8gb ram

i'm interested in buying it, but you cant find a lot of information about it here. especially reviews.

Good lord. So I bought the lenovo z510 in the end - £450 from amazon for 4GB, i5-4200m, gt740m 2GB

Figured I'd just plop another 4GB in myself, how difficult can it be. Oh, quite. You have to unscrew and remove the keyboard, then remove the DVD drive, then unscrew and remove the rear case, then remove the battery. Then you can add another slot of ram. All apparently user serviceable, but amazingly convoluted. The ram could easily have been handled with a simple hatch on the bottom..

Also slightly disappointed that it only has a standard 1Tb drive in. I think other countries get an SSHD standard. Lenovo really has a ton of variants for different markets. Oh well, will put an SSD on the wish list for Christmas.

Performance is fine for what it is needed for. Getting decent framerates in minecraft even with the newer integrated graphics (H4600)

Hi guys, I need a new Laptop

Country: Germany
Maximum budget: 800-900€
Max size: Not really important. I mostly use a monitor anyway
Planned usage: I use it for schoolwork (programming), watching streams and videos, and some mild gaming. I didn't really game that much on my previous laptop, but it would be nice to try a few newer games on low-mid settings (but I have no idea if my budget is too small for that)

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

That's like 1/3 of what you'd get for $1460, in the actual US. This is a much better buy, for the same price.
.

I'm slightly confused. Unless I'm reading them incorrectly, the one you linked to is an i7-4702MQ, 8GB ram, 750Gb HDD @5400rpm, no optical drive, 750m 2GB, 1080p screen

The one he linked to was an i7-4700HQ, 8Gb ram, 750GB HDD @7200rpm, DVD RW drive, 760m 2GB, 1080p screen.

So isn't his better spec for the same money?

You know what, good catch. I misread his as a GT 740M.

Edited.
Your budget is actually pretty decent.

Take a look at this.

13", 1080p IPS display, Maxwell GTX 860M, dual core CPU. € 899.00, and if you stretch the budget you can have it with a quad core i7-4701MQ for another € 76.

That will play any game out right now on High settings.

so, i ordered for my friend a Sager laptop from XOTIC PC , he is along time macbook user , and he said he want something different
he don't want a desktop because he travel from time to time ( he is a doctor )
at first , he insist of alienware , but they took 2 month and still didn't finish it ( problem from alienware it self )
so , we change to Sager

here are the spec :

i7-4910MQ 2.9Ghz 8m Cache
SLI (2x) - NVIDIA® GeForce™ GTX 880M (16.0GB total)
32GB DDR3 1600MHz
SSD : 750 GB
HDD : 1 Tera

my question : will this laptop be able to run the next 5 year of games in ultra sittings ?
what about the fan in this laptop ? is it loud ?
because i hate the fan in my msi ge60 , its too loud , and i figured the sager has 3 big fans , maybe its less loud ?

I am still not entirely sure if I want to pay 800 or 900. So another suggestion closer to 800€ would be really nice, then I have to decide how much I am willing to pay ;)

Hey guys. I'm looking for a really great gaming laptop for ~$2,000 - $2,500.

Should I still stay away from Alienware? I was thinking about a souped-up Alienware 17 or the GT60 Dominator 3K-474.

Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!

Thanks. How does this compare to the Lenovo Y50, especially quality of the screen?

I was also looking at the Asus N550JK-DS71T, but is the 850M good enough for gaming? I like the IPS screen on this though.

They both have good screens. The Y50 has a really bad touchpad though, according to users I've seen posting.

The thing about the Asus' 850M is that it has DDR3 memory, which is a large bottleneck. I'd stick with laptops which had GDDR5 VRAM.

Two 880Ms are about the power of a GTX TITAN, so yeah, it will last quite a while.

Here's a User Review of this notebook.

The GT 755M is not a bad card, but the GTX 860M is 50% faster than it in a lot of the latest games. so that extra 100€ nets you a great deal of extended longevity.

I can't say much bad about the AW17, except that you get a lot more for the money with other brands.

This goes for MSI, Alienware, all brand really: I really don't like the idea of spending $2k+ without coming away with a GTX 880M.

Well, it looks like the one you originally posted is the best in that budget range. If you want to go up to a much higher tier, this MSI is where you should go.

Hey K-Jack, is there anything a little cheaper than what you recommended me two weeks back? Budget was 1000-1200. You had recommended the GE60 Apache. I'm really only going to be playing mostly D3 or WoW on it.

To update, I found a laptop on Craigslist. Despite the risks, I got one far more powerful than what I could have afforded new. Lenovo Y580 - i7, 660M Graphics card, 8 gb ram, blu ray, and 256 gb Samsung 830 SSD (replacing the normal HD). The previous user did a clean install of Win 7 x64 Premium before selling it.

I have two minor issues, though. Battery life is low - a game can deplete it in just over an hour. Would it be a good idea to get a replacement like this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FB01KGC/?tag=neogaf0e-20 ?

Also, the system consistently fails to wake up from sleep mode. After reading online it looks like this occasionally happens with some models of lenovo laptops, and the best I could do was switch it to go into hibernate instead of sleep mode.

Games are going to tear through your battery life period.

Hey K-Jack, is there anything a little cheaper than what you recommended me two weeks back? Budget was 1000-1200. You had recommended the GE60 Apache. I'm really only going to be playing mostly D3 or WoW on it.

So how much less than $1k do you want to spend?

Gaming on battery always burns through the life extremely swiftly. That isn't a sign of a battery going bad.

So, I learned that the small light located on the power button on my MSI GE60 shows whether the 860m (lights up orange) or the Intel HD Graphics are running (lights up blue). What does it mean when it constantly blinks from blue to orange?

Also, I've been thinking about getting a cooling pad so I can comfortably edit/game on my bed, but I remembered someone here saying cooling pads aren't necessary if the laptop is doing its job correctly. So is this a better option? Just to keep the heat away from me.

Have you manually set Steam to use the integrated? It usually defaults to the Nvidia GPU.

I use a wooden lap table to protect myself; that one looks like a good option too.

Not less, just wanted to know if there were any other options I guess. I do want it to last thought through my last two years at uni though.
Since you'll be carrying it around school a lot, the 13.3" Sager NP7338 may be the better buy.

Little update.. Since the Y50s are in huge demand there might be even a bigger delay than before.. As you know, no one has received one yet.. They said mine will ship on 6/11 but who knows at this point.. I'm actually considering cancelling my order and going with a MSi or Sager..

They also have added various models as well.. Most people are certain that all the GPUs in the device will be Maxell variants of the 860m but some are skeptical since some models are 2 GB vRam while others are 4 GB which is equivalent to the inferior Kepler model. Anyways I really am somewhat disappointed that I have to wait but I will still give this a chance.. The Laptop is very attractive considering the size and hardware, but I don't mind the heavier and nosier Sager either..
