Super "NeoGAF Arcade Stick Thread" II TURBO

Hello GAF

I am looking to buy a Mad Catz TE stick since prices have gone down and I feel the need to play some Street Fighter with a proper stick instead of punishing my dualshock. I've ran across various offers on ebay aaaand I ran into a strange coloring of the initial SF4 TE. I know it says Collector's Edition on the box, but haven't found out anything about it on the webs. Is it legit, everything alright? I thought of funny lighting but still believe it's too orange/yellow-ish for that. Anyway, here's the photos, please advise.

Thanks!

Likely it's the art has faded due to significant UV exposure. That's what mine ended up looking like after a while- I should've put it in a cabinet or something when I wasn't using it.

I thought of that, but the logo looked pretty well, to me at least.
Gonna wait on a few more opinions and might make the purchase tomorrow.
Please keep advising GAF :D

Speaking of Focus Attack, just saw on SRK that they'll be at Saltfest and will have a coupon code:

"Use SALTFEST coupon code to score 10% off storewide this weekend. If you're attending, drop by table 801 Mods as they rep FA with both merch and professional mod services. You can also get a coupon code from them that's active all of June."

Anybody know what this coupon code is? The SALTFEST one expired yesterday. Would like to get that one that's good for June.

Snagged this today thanks to a weekend sale and some store credit:

I already like it more than my TE. The shape and layout is just plain better, I think. At this point the only mods I may bother doing to it are throwing a Hayabusa in there, plugging the two rightmost buttons (I strongly dislike 8 button layouts) and putting a bat onto it (if I don't somehow get used to a ball by then).

I'm with ya, fuck those 8 buttons, but a bat-top? That's just crazy talk...

But seriously, you like the Kai layout? I know there is a secret war brewing here between the guys who like the joystick close to the buttons like [B][I][U]STANDARD ARCADE PANEL[/U][/I][/B], or weirdos who like more space to waggle their sticks like Noir/Tekken weirdos. I bought a Kai variant stick accidently, without realizing it is a Vewlix layout with extra spacing between the stick and buttons, which secretly makes me hate it.

Damn you arcade politics!

Large hands have always made using a balltop difficult for me and playing HF at work every day during the week (both cabs use IL/Happ sticks) has rendered me damn near unable to use one. The extra space is part of this, too.

I've honestly never cared for other layouts. * City layouts aren't good for me even though they're closer to the actual human finger layout. To use them I would have to literally make my own panel. I remember the first time I used a Vewlix layout I fell in love because it was comfortable and worked.

Might as well post this, got my buttons in a while ago:

Not sure whether to get another clear top or stick the green back on, or get a pink bubble top and green clear or [insert a billion other combinations of balltops]. Damn Sanwa for not making clear pink parts! (I do have a clear red top but I think that'd stand out too much)

I also want some light inside the panel cause the clear rims look dark from above but can't think of a simple way to power it when the cab itself is switched on. Maybe hijack/piggy back on the speaker lines but I've heard that can tweak the sound.

Grabbing the 5v and ground from the JAMMA wiring should be more than enough to power a few LEDs. That or try to tap into the marquee lights wiring.

I want a confirm of this.
I have a WWE Brawlstick (should be like the SFIV arcade stick), are these parts correct?

One thing I don't understand in the stick description is: "Switchable from 8 to 4-way operation by rotating the inner part of the restrictor plate. ". What does it mean? I don't need an 8 way restrictor? EDIT: ok I was a video, the 4 way isn't a square right?

Both 8-way and 4-way are square. You achieve 4-way by rotating the plate 45 degrees to a diamond shape. This will make it impossible to activate 2 switches at once, giving you only the 4 cardinal directions, which is great for games like Pac-Man but unusable for stuff like fighting games.

my idea was to use the 4-way for fighting games and the 8-way for games like metal slug.
The parts are correct for a wwe brawlstick?

Yeah, they're drop-in Matcatz replacements.

In 4-way mode, you won't be able to jump forward, jump backward, or block low attacks in fighting games.

Shhh... Don't tell him that. Lets beat him up in Street Fighter a couple of times first, then let him in on the secret.

maybe I'm missing something, but isn't the brawlstick restrictor a square one?
edit: ok is probably a misunderstanding, with 4-way I mean a square gate , you mean the one like a + ?
edit2: yeah in fact that's what sixteen-bit was saying, my bad.

so basically if I want to play fighting games and shmups or else like metal slug, do I need to buy the 2 restrictors (square and octagonal)? Or only one (because of the one included in the joystick)

Square and octagon gates are both eight way; both allow you to hit four cardinal directions and four diagonals. Octagon is a subset of a square gate and is totally unnecessary.

8 way octagon - will lock in at all 8 directions

8 way square - will lock it at 4 diagonals, but still allow UDLR

To get a 4 way (diamond), you can rotate the inner ring like this

I see, so the 8-way restrictor that comes with the joystick is sufficient?
Yes it's like the stock stick, square if you move the stick along the edges and works as 8-way. But with this one you can rotate the inner piece so the square becomes like a diamond (i.e. just a rotated square) and becomes a 4-way stick as a result.

I use the octagonal gate myself but it's not necessary. Some prefer it, some don't. There's also circular gates if you want the stick to move in a circle along the edge like the usual sticks in American cabs.

I see, I guess I'll take an octagonal gate too then!

...not really sure if you interpreted the post right but whatever, it's something to try out if you don't really have any preference I guess.

There's also other tweaks like spring mods to make it feel tighter, or actuators to change the amount of throw to gate and/or switches.

My HORI Fighting Edge randomly died on me today for no reason, does anyone know where I can possibly find a replacement PCB for it and if they ship to Canada? I don't know about these things so I don't know if it's something that's specific to the FE or if I can get any random PCB and throw it in there.

did you contact hori

Waiting on reply.

I've already spent so much on upgrading my PC(literally upgraded yesterday) That I can't afford to repair this. Is it at all possible to replace the PCB with a PS4 PCB so it will be playable on a PS4? If so I'll just wait it out till the fall.

so need to a new joystick for my harp3 it feels like the switches are going out.

and part places online still last time i looked lizard lick closed

The FE certainly has a unique PCB; I don't see how any old PCB could drive the touchscreen interface.

I tried playing metal slug with the default square restrictor and I find it uncomfortable (with 2D fighters is great) that's why I wanted to try the octogonal one.
In the arcade machines which one do they use for metal slug for example?

Anyone think they can lend a hand?

I have a Matcatz Fightstick SE for PS3 that I bought ages ago when SFIV first released. I've since sold my PS3, but I snagged SSFIV on steam for the sale. I've plugged my stick into the PC and it recognizes it and installs it, but none of the buttons work. I've looked around and this appears to be an issue with Nvidia chipsets, which I don't have. I have an Intel chipset, but I don't know if newer chipsets are also incompatible. Is there any kind of work around?

If not, is there any kind of option to easily/cheaply change the PCB in the stick or something?

Thanks

Depends where you're from. In the US you're generally playing on Happ sticks with circular movement (and generally feel completely different in other ways too) unless you happen to have an arcade with Japanese cabs (or live in Japan of course), in which case you're usually dealing with square gates. Anywhere else uh, probably square...or circle.

Kinda, assuming it's even the PCB that's the problem. Off the top of my head there's the PS360 and Toodles Cthulhu (and other boards by him?). There's some others around but those are the most widely available I think.

Hey gaf, just got my account activated. Thought I would share the few changes I made to my TE.

Just quick HD Audrey Hepburn picture I found online and to take the seriousness down a few notches threw Godzilla and king geedorah in the background. Just Pink Sanwa parts replacing the stock parts. Swapped it out to an octo gate for a while but recently went back to square.

I have the exact same problem as you, and was just typing up a big post until I saw yours! I guess my old PC was lucky to have a compatible Mobo, but my new PC does not.

I did a bit of digging around and apparently if you run it through a USB card with the right chipset that can also work. I'm thinking of trying one of these myself, but I'm still not 100% sure: http://www.ncix.com/detail/syba-io-card-sd-via-5u-5-a7-2222115133.htm

Has anyone had success using one of these cards with those Madcatz PS3 fightsticks?

FWIW, Recroommasters has started selling these 2 player control panels:

SD_controller_SM.png

SD_Control_layout_lg.png

They come in black, blue or red color schemes. Sticks are Sanwa. Not sure about the buttons buy they are illuminated. Works with PS3, 360, PC, Mac out of the box and has auto switching. They're expensive ($300 for the first run, now $350) but then again two new 1 player arcade sticks can cost that much depending on make/model.

They are made to work with their DIY sitdown cabs (I have one and love it), but I imagine they can also be used independently or adapted for other cabs etc. I ordered the red scheme one for my cab. Maybe I'll post some pics in a few weeks after I get it.

I'd so buy one of their cabs if I had the money. Pop in a PC with MAME on it and turn it into an old school fighter cab.

I'm thinking about getting a plexi cover similar to this, but without the hole for the turbo panel, and no holes for the middle screws. Does anyone know if 4 screws make the top panel less stable? Will it bow up in the middle or anything?

Question: Are the dimensions of Sanwa switches the same as the off-brand ones used in Mad Catz' non-TE arcade sticks? I've got a TvC stick converted to 360 that had several of the stock buttons break, and I was hoping to internally turn them all into Sanwas while also being a total cheapass.

Yes. I've replaced microswitches on my clone buttons with sanwa ones.
