I guess because I had absolutely zero hype for this movie, I walked away entertained. My wife, who is a diehard X-Men comic book fan, has been underwhelmed by every single one of the X-Men movies save the very first one. She even hates X-2, which many people list as their favorites.

I was pretty convinced she wasn't going to like DoFP, but she loved it. She actually applauded when it was over, and I don't think I've seen her do that for a movie in a while. I don't even think she did it for Godzilla, and she loved that one too. She was more relieved that it wasn't a big steaming pile of shit like The Last Stand, she said.

I felt it was a solid, entertaining movie with more humor than I was expecting given its grim premise, and I felt the characters and acting were great. I loved Mystique having a bigger, more fleshed out presence, and the winks and nods to various plotlines/characters from both comics and movies were nice as well. The standout scene for me was the Quicksilver scene, which had the audience, myself included, rolling and cheering. When I first saw the pictures of him and his outfit, I thought he was going to be the worst thing in the movie, and he ended up being my favorite. I felt the time travel story was straight forward, and uncomplicated. No crazy twisty, timey-wimey convoluted stuff we often get with time travel. It's like Back to the Future in that regard, which also had a pretty straight forward take on time travel (although, ironically more complicated than DoFP, for a comedy).

My criticisms of the film are very few, for the most part:

The opening was the weakest part, for me. It was visually well done, but very exposition heavy that felt sloppy. It felt like we were missing a movie in between The Wolverine and Days of Future Past. It seemed like we should have gotten another movie in between those two, set in the future, that kind of established that setting, and why it was so important to change it. With that said, it still does a good job of setting the tone of the film, but it felt under-utilized. I am a fan of starting stories en medias res, however, so I don't know.

Fassbender was pretty dialed down in this one, I felt. Granted, I don't feel he had much screentime or meat to work with, but I think his performance in First Class was stronger. He does have some excellent stuff once the story gets going full swing, however.

Hank McCoy. I love Beast, but his makeup was pretty bad, and the actor who plays him is...boring? I guess is the word. He felt kind of useless for the direct plot of saving the future, but he was important to Xavier's story in between First Class and 1973. We just don't get to see much of that. He was just kind of there.

The future mutants were really cool, but we didn't get to know them very well, so when shit starts hitting the fan, we feel something. That's where I felt a movie that took place in the future would have been nice to have, starring Blink, Bishop, Warpath, Kitty, etc, etc. I felt they had some interesting dynamics to them that we missed out on.

Some of the special effects, in particular a night time scene looked pretty weak. Mostly just that one scene, but for a $250 million movie, I was surprised.Overall, though, the movie looked great.

Jennifer Lawrence's duck face in that one scene they show in the trailers (and at the end of Amazing Spider-Man 2, if I recall). I love Jennifer Lawrence, but I hate the duck face. I know her lips are kind of full and pouty, but man, it looked really stupid.

I don't give movies scores, but I definitely recommend it as a "Watch" for people that may have been turned off of the franchise after The Last Stand, and never gave First Class or The Wolverine a shot. These last three X-Men movies have been incredibly solid and enjoyable, even if they aren't perfect and have some dodgy elements.

EDIT: Also, let me know if anything above should be in spoiler tags. I tried to be as spoiler free as possible, but I may have missed some stuff.

Better than First Class, and I loved that movie. My biggest gripe with First Class was the weak characterization across the supporting cast, and I felt DoFP improved on that front immensely. Even the few characters who weren't fleshed out worked pretty well, I felt. It made sense that suddenly being in a dystopian future, there were some elements that may be unfamiliar or even odd to the audience, and that extended to a handful of characters who you never really got an opportunity to get to know. You knew their motivations, however, and they were really easy to root for. I find that to ultimately be a more enjoyable style of characterization than the fairly weak portrayal characters like Emma Frost and the butterfly girl got in First Class. Then characters like Quicksilver killed it, and this is also by far the most I've ever enjoyed the ice guy.

But like in first class, Magneto and Xavier were the best parts. God, I loved both of them in this movie. I also felt like Hugh Jackman and Jennifer Lawrence pulled out the best Wolverine and Mystique, respectively, that they've ever done.

All in all, great stuff.

growing up with the series really helped too tho. like this was during the lotr and matrix years for me. when i was in...junior high.

i think i was around 12-13 when x2 was in theaters.
Yeah, that's exactly what I said. Made it more impactful, this is the first one since 2 that got my true excitement stirring again.

I'm watching the entire X-Men series as a lead-in to Days of Future Past (excluding Origins because fuck that movie)

In X-Men: The Last Stand, it shows Xavier and Magneto circa 1990 going to meet Jean Grey for the first time. Xavier is walking and the two are still working together to find mutants.

In X-Men: First Class, Xavier gets injured and breaks up with Magneto in 1962.

I take it for DoFP, First Class takes precedent? Or was First Class a full reboot and no one told me? I thought DoFP was both a sequel to First Class and to the original series?

Whether or not First Class is officially a reboot, it is in my mind.

Original trilogy and the other 100 Wolverine movies are pure shit and should be taken as nothing other than Wolverine fanfiction

I liked it a lot. Tightly scripted and the ending leaves a lot of possibilities.
Problems stem from the huge cast, as expected most of the cast doesn't do much other than be in one or two action scenes (though they are very good scenes).

I'd like to see a film with the entire future cast to be honest.

The best part is
the ending wipes The Last Stand from canon, and it seems like the films in general have put X-Men Origins as non-canon. X-Men and X2 seem to have still happened, at least roughly.

Though it's a bit odd to render The Wolverine non-canon a year after it came out and was well received, but then I guess Wolverine's character development in that film still happened.

Just got home from the theatre. I'd say this is right there with X2. Quicksilver was awesome. Blink was awesome. Dinkledge was oddly quirky and fun as Trask. McAvoy and Fassbender perfectly nail Young Xavier and Erik. I found Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique in this to be particularly strong. She was pretty weak in First Class, but she really owned the role in DoFP. Jackman was amazing as Wolverine, as always.

If I had to rank the X Flicks:

X2/DoFP
First Class
X-Men
The Wolverine
X3
Wolverine: Origins

As far as Superhero Films in general, my top 5:

The Dark Knight
DoFP/X2
Avengers
Batman Begins
Iron Man 3

And holy hell. I cannot effing wait for Apocalypse.

My family is watching First Class and my dad is certain Kevin Bacon played Klaus Schmidt in 1944 and then became Sebastian Shaw in 1962. If he's right, then who was the Klaus Schmidt Erik killed in Argentina? Was Sebastian a Nazi so he could speak German?

Really amazing movie.
does the ending mean wolverine has no adamantium skeleton?

Also are there two wolverine origins movies? I remember seeing one with dead pool that was awful.

There's X-Men: Origins: Wolverine. Which is the one you're talking about. Everyone considers it to be awful.

Then there's The Wolverine, which is not an origin story, just a one-off story about Wolverine that's pretty good! I'd recommend watching it.

‘X-Men’ Rules World With Massive $261 Million Global Box-Office Opening

“X-Men: Days of Future Past” steamrolled the competition on its way to an estimated $90.7 million three-day Memorial Day weekend haul in North America, and added a huge $171 million from overseas for a whopping $261 million first weekend globally.

...

The domestic opening for “Days of Future Past” is the second-best in the 14-year-old franchise's history, behind only “X-Men: The Last Stand,” which brought in $102 million over three days on Memorial Day weekend in 2006, and $122.8 million over the four days.

...

The critics were sold (91 percent positive on Rotten Tomatoes) and audiences have been too, awarding it an “A” CinemaScore. Director Bryan Singer largely skipped the promotional push on the film, and concerns that his legal problems would hurt the film commercially evaporated.

...

Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros.’ “Godzilla” took a considerable 67 percent second-week drop from its $93 million debut last weekend, and becomes the fourth movie in a row to be No. 1 and done after a week on top, following “The Other Woman,” “Amazing Spider-Man 2” and “Neighbors.”

Did Kitty Pride always have to ability to time shift people? Also, using Mystique's DNA to modify the Setinels....was that part of the actual comic story line?

Explain this quicksilver thing to me. How come the character can be in both X Men and Avengers 2?

They are using two different versions of the character. MCU Quicksilver is not Magneto's son and there isn't any mention of him being a mutant or part of the X-Men - the word the MCU uses for mutants is "gifted" instead. X-Men Quicksilver meanwhile is mentioned as a mutant (quite obviously), but there isn't any mention of him being in the Avengers. Wether X-Men Quicksilver will turn out to be Magneto's son in this continuity is still up in the air.

Also what Andrex said.

all this double quicksilver and "there's no such thing as mutants in the MCU" blows. I wish they could just shake hands and say they can coexist in the same universe and make billions of dollars.

One of the other xmen threads made me wonder. What are the chances of X-Cutioner's Song after Apocalypse? Considering we will be getting an X-Force movie, I think it could work out perfectly.

I liked the quote at the end of Cap 2. "This is the age of miracles!"

Miracles being a word that starts with "M." :P

I don't really like or know X-Men well and I only have vague memory of the previous movies but I thought this move was well done.

The best power in the movie's gotta be Blink though. That's a seriously awesome power and I want it, even beyond all the more flashy ones like Storm or that flame/ice guy or Magneto or Professor X.

Honestly Blink was probably my favorite new character in this film.

I felt bad for Colossus though,
he only got wrecked
. Who was that guy with the daggers that worked with Blink though?

Also, postcredits scene and possible story spoiler:
who are the 4 knights of the apocalypse? I know Gambit is one of them but who are the others?

Warpath was the one with the daggers. He is basically just a good fighter with superhuman senses, especially sight.

Ugh, I don't know how I feel about Gambit being one. I would rather have them introduce new bad guys as the Horsemen. The Horseman of Death was also Archangel and I think he would be better than Gambit. I mean they can use both, but in the comic-verse its one or the other. But Channing Tatum is already signed on as Gambit so who knows.

Here's a list of who has been a Horseman.

I loved Quicksilver's outfit, the only part I didn't like was the super fake-looking wig.

Gonna be Quicksilver for Halloween this year.

Should be a somewhat easy costume too, lol.

I haven't seen much discussion on it, but I've seen the movie 3 times now and each time I come away with even greater affection for McAvoy's performance. I mean god DAMN. He was absolutely incredible in this film.

Award worthy in my mind, seriously.
