What's everyone's thoughts of them releasing the 3DS version this summer with say 35 characters and then updating it with free DLC once the Wii U version comes out?

Basically as a way to not lose the draw of the Wii U once we know the cast with the 3DS version. It also would allow the game to come out earlier since the 3DS is likely not going to have as much content- as we've seen with music choices.
Against that.

No matter how many times people wish Nintendo would cripple the 3DS version for no other reason than to "keep the hype" or whatever, it won't happen.

The draw of the WiiU version with be HD and better controller options, I would rather have a full roster at launch of 3DS.

Noooo. I want all characters already in the cart. Would be lame to have to wait to play as so and so.

I don't understand this argument that knowing/having the full roster will kill the hype for the Wii U version. People will want the Wii U version because it looks better and is better for party-type play: having four people in the living room playing on the same TV is more fun than four people sitting around on 3DSs. Knowing the full roster once the 3DS version comes out does nothing to change that. Anyone who wants the Wii U version now will still want the Wii U version when they have the 3DS version.

EDIT: is there a convenient shorthand for these games? It's so awkward to have to say "the Wii U version" and "the 3DS version" every time.

Personally, I'm into Smash as much as I am because of the characters. And if they can add characters via DLC, then that negates the need for a sequel as far as I'm concerned. And I want to need to buy the next Smash game to get the characters I want, as well as continue using them.

But if they can add DLC, I won't really have a reason to get the next game, other than the fact that it's the one that'll be compatible with what will be the current gen.

I just call it Smash 4.

You know, now that I'm thinking about it, I wonder if the 3DS version will have the traditional single player modes (Classic, All Star, Events, Stadium (Target Smash/Homerun Contest)) in addition to Smash Run. Not to mention if they'll also have Co Op like Brawl did (to be honest, that's one of the better ideas Brawl did)

Of course, this is all assuming that Smash U will have all of those modes (and hopefully its own exclusive SP mode
as outlandish as it is, I'm hoping for an arcade story mode with character intros, endings and maybe even special rival fights like usual fighting game arcade modes do
).

I really can't wait for E3.

EDIT: Completely forgot about Multi Man/Cruel modes!

I personally don't like it. I'd rather have all the characters at the time of release. I'd maybe be ok with the Wii U version having a couple of completely new exclusive characters, but only if the 3ds version got them eventually

for3DS?
4-3DS?
SmashDS (smash hasn't been on a handheld, so smash ds can only refer to 'Super Smash Bros for 3DS")

Also, I hope that every smash bros going forward isn't "Smash bros for <system name>." This one gets a pass because 'for' and 'four' works as a pun, but in the future, not so much.

Both Wii U and 3DS Versions: Smash 4

Wii U Version: Smash Wii U

3DS Version: Smash 3DS

Or SSB4, SSB Wii U, and SSB 3DS.

Easy.

Hey guys just wanted to ask if congressman had updated his wallpaper design, you know the one where everybody is in the logo in the middle

3DS version and Wii U version, stop being lazy and just type it out

It's not about laziness, it's about style. "The 3DS version" and "the Wii U version" are clunky phrases crying out for abbreviations or pronouns, especially when used multiple times over a few sentences.

Of the limited options we have, those are probably the best. I wish they'd just given these games actual names like Melee and Brawl, but oh well :/

Anyone expect Tournaments to have events for both the 3ds and Wii U version or just the Wii U?

Online for 3DS isn't consistent, plus everyone has to have a 3DS to play. 3DS may have a tourney here and there, but expect the Wii U to have the lion's share.

Some TOs have already announced they will have some side tournaments for 3ds. I dont think it will ever take the main stage though, maybe while the WiiU is not out or if the different stages makes it so it develops a different meta (unlikely)

So many duplicate frames.

Poor guy's probably using last-gen ocular implants.
I love the new feature where you don't need to blink anymore, makes it so much more immersive.

They could have called it Super Smash Bros Kerfuffle, but then we still would have needed to say Kerfuffle 3DS and Kerfuffle Wii U.
