Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 8: Put mii in, coach

Just quite a bit more vertical and without the handy projectile. But his Side Special could be used as a recovery too, right?

IIRC it's awful unless it's charged, and if you hit someone (even if they're air dodging!) or a projectile you stop and go into a helpless state.

Florida Locations for Best Buy Smash are complete ass. Miami virtually gets two, Tampa gets two, and Fort Myers (closest city to me) gets jack shit. Looks like I'm not playing Smash till 3DS launches.

I use the side special as a recovery all the time. Of course I'm playing 'for fun' though. In a competitive pro environment I could see how his side special could be used against him.

Of course, a lot of the time it'll be your only option because it has great horizontal movement, but Ike's recovery either with Side-B or Up-B isn't fantastic considering his weight.

I might try to make it to both. I can definitely go Saturday, but I'm guessing it will be crowded. Wednesday I wouldn't be able to make it until about 6:30, and at that point I'm not sure I'd even get through the line. Either way, I bet both times will be a lot of trouble just to end up playing a match or two. :
I'm ditching class to go. I'd say try and have a buddy secure your spot?

Yeah, they kinda suck. Closest to me is Daytona Beach, might try to go there on the Wednesday date.

I doubt they'd let me cut in line, even if someone held the spot for me. I can't really cut out of work early either, since I'm already taking off E3 days on Monday and Tuesday lol. Oh well, I think I'll just try to get there and hope for the best.

Good Luck! Somw store might let you.

As expected, no NYC Best Buys. This will probably mean Nintendo World will be doing it instead last like year.
Believe so yeah.

The hype can't wait.

So great that it continues from his death last episode. Perfect.

Also, the physical coin pushed me from 'thinking about going to best buy' to 'definitely going to best buy. maybe both days'

I really didn't wanna go, but now I have to, and early. Shame the wed one is at 4pm :/ And the nearest best buy is over an hour away. Hope that if i get there by 430, they're not entirely out of the coins.

No Puerto Rico again

Lo siento, fellow boricua :( :( :( I moved to the US a while ago, and I definitely don't miss things NEVER happening down there :(
I remember games coming out later than normal, too :/ Probably not a thing anymore, but when I was a kid, It felt like weeks before our stores actually got the games in.

Ah. That sounds absolutely wretched. Hopefully that's fixed up a bit. I always enjoyed Marth VS Ike with me and my bud. Only problem was It was too easy to gimp his Ike. :c

16, or 18 If you count Poke Trainer as 3.

IIRC

Edit. ER... I was way off. 12, or 14 if you counted Poke as 3.

Sakurai considers transformations separate characters. So much so that he split them up this time around.

You forget Lucas. So we had 18 newcomers in Brawl.

Lucas is #6 silly :B

But yeah, that's why I think people who predict a small roster (under 48) are silly. The number of newcomers introduced in each iteration increases each time. Cuts did happen into Brawl, but I'd say only two of them were significant (Mewtwo and Roy).

I wouldn't consider Toon Link a new character. He's the natural progression of Young Link, updated to fit the style of the latest game - which is why YL also isn't in the files unlike all the other cut Melee characters. Toon Link picked up Young Link's moveset as well.

Young Link and Toon Link are less similar to each other than Mario and Dr. Mario are. And Sakurai considers Toon Link a Brawl newcomer.

Speaking of which, it looks like Mewtwo slipped your mind in your 'cuts' list up there. Thanks for the lists though, nicely done overall.

Gah what's wrong with me (I haven't had my coffee yet today). Thanks for the heads up!

I can't believe I forgot him. He's the one I miss the most haha

At least in my mind, Toon Link is a new comer, but Young Link wasn't cut from Smash Bros. I guess, what I mean, is to me, Toon Link is the progression of Young Link, while still being a new character.

Also a lot of characters changed between Brawl and Melee. No doubt Young Link would have probably behaved like Toon Link if they opted for that design instead.

Well, I guess that answers my question about fixing Ike's gimped recovery.

I feel like Sakurai likes to balance strength with recovery, but it's not equal across all strong characters, nor is that really a good balance to achieve when smash is primarily played on the edge.

It's impossible to increase the number of newcomers each game, especially when the number of potential smash bros candidates isn't increasing much. Just because the trend says newcomers increase each game, that doesn't mean that trend will continue. If anything, it'll be a bell curve. We barely get any new notable characters anymore, and there aren't THAT many older nintendo characters deserving of a spot. Rosalina is a perfect addition for a new nintendo character introduced (and used in more than 1 game) since the last smash bros. Little mac is a perfect addition for a 'retro' nintendo character that probably deserved a spot a while ago, but never got one. We have so few left on the list of 'nintendo characters who have been a primary part of more than 1 game.' Most of them are villains, at this point. There's also the issue of balancing a game with a humongous roster. The more characters you add, the harder it is to balance (have to test every possible character combination).

At best, we'll get a chiasmus of newcomers, where we can hope for melee amounts, followed by smash 64 amounts of newcomers, but I think brawl was the 'peak' for newcomers. I definitely wouldn't hope for more than 14, which is what melee had.

We have 6 announced so far. At this point in brawl's pre-release lifetime (3+ months before launch), we had about 11 newcomers announced. I can see 2-3 more announced for E3, and maybe the rest being secret, or announced in some sort of 'smash brothers direct' right before 3ds launch. Hopefully they all get trailers.

I just wonder when or if we'll get the Marvel Vs Capcom 3 'Reboot' of smash bros, where everyone is scrapped, and the game starts over on a new engine. The most important ones come back (mario, link, samus, etc), and it's a surprise to see who actually makes the cut. Maybe when we get a 'smash bros vs capcom' or 'smash bros vs namco' or something along those lines, and the whole game engine is redone.

Shame hearing about all you guys who can't partake in this. I'll be sure to play as characters you all wanted to try if ya want?

Rosalina, if you could? I'm really curious to see how she works with Luma. Like, just how independent Luma is, the attack changes between solo Rosalina and Rosie/Luma together, stuff like that. She's the newcomer I'm looking forward to the most, and the most unique looking one as well.

I'm honestly perfectly content with the number of new comers right now. Once/if Mii and Mewtwo are announced I'll pretty much have everyone I've ever wanted in a Smash Bros game.

I don't think we'll get any less than at least 10 newcomers for this game.

I suppose so.

I agree with this.

I think it's true that we won't just keep getting more and more, but we are by no means scraping the bottom of the barrel right now. I fully expect the roster of this game to be between 50 and 55.

The only thing people seem to underestimate is Sakurai's ambition. The man is a fuckin dynamo.

Someone in the Smashfest thread said that they only had one Wii U available for the public to play last year, that sounds awful.

Also, it will be 4 players right?

Brawl felt like a "clean up" roster. Like half the new comers were characters that should have been in Smash since day 1. I think that's why the roster of new comers is larger than it feels like it was.

It took 3 games to get Meta Knight, Dedede, Diddy, Wario, Pit and Charizard, characters that could have, and should have been on the roster well before the 3rd entry in the series.

Wario and Dedede still baffle me, to this day, how long they took to be added to Smash Bros.

I would rather them focus on making more characters return (which likely requires quite a bit less effort) than them bringing in lots of characters of which very few people know. IMO there are not too many worthwhile characters left, and I would rather them bring back characters like Ice Climbers and Jiggly Puff than introduce characters that only people from places like here have ever heard of.

I think Mii's would be worthwhile edition, along with Wonder Red, Ridley and maybe another F-Zero character... but really, how many characters that are worthwhile are left?

Keep in mind that Dedede was planned in the first game, and was kept as a backup concept for Melee, and Wario originally was considered as Mario's clone in Melee, but Sakurai didn't think it would do Wario justice.
