Washington Post: Scripps National Spelling Bee draws racially charged comments after Indian Americans win again

For the first time in more than 50 years, two young wordsmiths were declared co-champions of the Scripps National Spelling Bee on Thursday night. However, some on social media seemed more preoccupied with their heritage than their way with words.

Sriram Hathwar, 14, of Painted Post, N.Y., and Ansun Sujoe, 13, of Fort Worth, Tex., shared the win after almost exhausting the 25 designated words in the final round.

Both boys are Indian American. In fact, the past eight winners and 13 of the past 17 have been of Indian descent, a run that began in 1999, the Associated Press reported.

The fact was seemingly too much for some on social media — who tweeted, for example, “Where are our American kids?”

Matt Yglesias has a collection of tweets in case dumb people saying stupid shit on the internet surprises or interests you: Racists attack spelling bee contestants

Our 'American kids' are up there winning the spelling bee, you racist hicks. :)

As for why the racist hicks' kids aren't winning, I suspect they spend too little time teaching their kids to spell and too much teaching their kids to Jesus.

Disagree.

They're not up there because they're too busy learning how to use guns and protect the 2nd amendment rather than learning unnecessary things like spelling.

Can we get this casual bashing of Christians out of here?

You'd think they would be ashamed of themselves that their "true American" kids lost to "sum immigrant terrorist Muslum Islamic communist non-American who dun even no howda speak english nyuck nyuck" in a spelling bee.

Another example of the word 'racist' probably being thrown around too easily.

These tweets are awfully ignorant, but not really racist.

Let's see:

White people who kicked out native people of America, whom were mistakenly called Indians, are now complaining that the American kids of real Indian decent are winning the American spelling bee...

Have I got that right?

What does being caucasian have to do with being an american?

These tweets are fucking stupid.

Everything. We are the majority. We found America. We were here FIRST. All these smelly middle-eastern kids shouldn't even be allowed to compete.

And is it even really a competition? They have to be giving the Indians some easier words. When you have names with like five o's or two u's, you can't possibly spell any NORMAL American words.

USA USA USA

They should be ashamed for being ignorant racist fucks, but the spelling bee is fucking stupid and a pointless waste of time.
Also, when you make fun of "how dem rednecks talk", you're just making fun a regional dialect of poor people, which is not that great of a thing (not on the level of racism, but still).

p.s.
With that being said, a tie?
This shit is unamerican.

are we sure these places are really in America though?

I've never heard of this "Fort Worth". Sounds fake

Ra-cism

1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.
3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.

Read that and read the tweets again.

I feel like some of the examples weren't really serious.

If you're Indian I'm cool with you winning spelling bees but don't mock my American heritage.
Come on. That HAS to be a joke.
Some of them just seem to mock the fact that "american" kids suck a spelling bees (apparently). I dunno if this is as racially charged as I was lead to believe

Why is spelling such a big deal

Just do math contests or even art contests

Put these chicken nugget ass kids in obstacles where some macguyver shit needs to be done

Fuck aardvarks

Yeah, looking at it now I feel like it was a very stupid thing to do when I could have just wrote it normally. I guess I just got too annoyed at the racists and found it amusing that their perfect "American" kids were being beaten by who they see as foreigners/immigrants. Still, I get what you mean and I apologize for it.

Leaving the comment up though, because I won't try to hide my fuck-up or cover it up and pretend it never happened.

You know, it's okay to call white people racist when they say racist things. You're not going to be racist by association.

Still not seeing it. I mainly see people who don't understand what an 'American' is. Not discrimination or hate or feelings of superiority over other races.

And I do.

White people who kicked out native people of America, whom were mistakenly called Indians, are now complaining that the American kids of real Indian decent are winning the American spelling bee...

Have I got that right?

No, you're quite mistaken. The white people who kicked out the native americans aren't the same people who are now complaining that american kids of indian decent are winning spelling bees. They are actually completely different people. The people who kicked out the native Americans have been dead for hundreds of years.

This seems factual. So it's not them, it's their kids.

We will get these stories after big events from now until the end of time, or at least the end of Twitter, because gathering stupid comments is so easy now.

I know. It's just particularly frustrating with Twitter. So many of these account will have like four followers or some shit. These people are literally screaming into the void. Then these articles are basically calls to action to harass these people.

There's no way to read these stories and get any kind of understanding out of it.

Yes, because no other white people came to the US after that, ever. Every white person in the US right now is a descendent of someone who killed Native Americans. Definitely.

This also seems factual. So many random white people just are racists no matter what their historical background.

I thought the correct nomenclature was American Indian.

Indian American sounds, like, from India to me. And it was the first time in 50 years or something, but racists get butthurt.
It was not the first time in 50 years.

And they are Indian Americans, not American Indians.

Still not seeing it. I mainly see people who don't understand what an 'American' is. Not discrimination or hate or feelings of superiority over other races.

Shit, man. A bunch of ignorant assholes essentially hold this perverted view that just because some American kids do not belong to the nationality by virtue of their skin color. What does it take, a lynching?

It was not the first time in 50 years.

And they are Indian Americans, not American Indians.

First thing the title made me think of was that Simpsons bit:

Apu: "Today, I am no longer an Indian living in America. I am an Indian-American. "

Lisa: "You know, in a way, all Americans are immigrants. Except, of course Native Americans. "

Homer: "Yeah, Native Americans like us."

Lisa: "No, I mean American Indians."

Apu: "Like me."

Lisa: "No! I mean... "

Shit, man. A bunch of ignorant assholes essentially hold this perverted view that just because some American kids do not belong to the nationality by virtue of their skin color. What does it take, a lynching?
They identify them as 'Indians' before they identify them as 'Americans'. Not because of they have dark skin, but because they *are* of Indian descent. Notice the black guy in the tweets? This isn't a whites vs dark skin folk thing.

Just going by the article: "For the first time in more than 50 years. . ."
You might want to read more than just the first few words then. ;)

This also seems factual, e.g. my dad. But only white people seem to cry about what constitutes being American.
I personally know Mexicans that "cry" about how other Mexicans are coming in illegally, and treat them like shit because their family did it the "right" way.

Both are living, working in America. I would say both are Americans.

Everyone has groups that hate each other, even within their own group.

That's some fucked up shit, but then again the other day this GF beating POS who also happens to be Korean was calling me a FOB and asked me why all FOBs are faggots and stop hitting on his GF.

I was really confused...

So your saying I meant only one of them instead of two? Because my initial statement doesn't seem to mention that. Reads it again, sorry not seeing it, unless you meant something else?

It's a very strange thing. The first time I heard a Mexican coworker of mine get angry at a Mexican customer, and call him a wab/wetback behind his back, I just kinda stood there like "This is a term other people have probably used to try to hurt you, why would you use the same word..."

Does he see himself as white(r)/superior to due to having lighter skin or something?

Like a black guy calling another black guy a nigger. I just...what?

If you are gonna be racist, at least get it right. Anyone born in U.S. is considered "American".

Should have said "where da white kidz at?"

Racists are bad enough as it is but racists who are bad at being racists are worse. For example, nothing more embarrassing than using a derogatory term used for Japanese against Chinese people.

Or Caucasian being used exclusively for white people.

I appreciate a racist who knows his shit.

I don't think the reactions are based on the co-win, but just on the premise of Indian Americans winning all these spelling bees in general.

FYGM transcends all race and culture.

But surely the "first time in 50 years" refers to them both winning, not the reactions? Unless your claiming that's what I meant (which I didn't, I know there have been racist remarks before).
