Sony stick pretty closely to their ~10 year plans, huh? One of the reasons I was generally okay with getting a Vita in the first place.

Play Stick it to the Man if you like Double Fine. Best on Vita because of the control scheme.
 
I posted this in the other thread, but it's worth mirroring. As part of Sony's Backstage series of articles, PSP's engineer team got to explain their design methodologies and challenges from the initial concept to the PSP-1000.

I've never seen anyone from SCE indicate that they're willing to support Vita and PS4 for ten years. The world has changed too much for that to be a viable plan. I wouldn't be surprised if PSP's discontinuation came at the hands of rising component costs due to scarcity than entirely collapsed sales.

No. But it's a safe enough assumption. I doubt they spent 2 decades building up consumer trust just to cash it in on the Vita when they could very easily keep it on life support and a low cost low risk plan. And as far as I can tell their premium curation plan (Minis->Vita->PS4) runs through the Vita up to the PS4. I'm mostly using Futurlab as a template for how to bring a studio up from nothing to just so good. And they just expanded to three teams. The Vita isn't going anywhere even if it'll never get another Western AAA ever again. And besides, it's a handheld, those mofos get relaunched every 3 years.

I think both of you are right, to a certain degree. I agree with Takao that world's changed too much. The emergence of digital content, as well as how it's delivered (downloads, streaming) is definitely going to impact the lifespans of these consoles/handhelds. I still think Sony will support the Vita and PS4 for a while though, I don't think we're at the point where streaming is a viable enough option that hardware refreshes will become more common. So yeah, it might not be a whole ten years for the Vita/PS4, but I don't think Sony's going to release new hardware so soon either.

Nice haul. Check out Deadstorm Pirates in the Time Crisis collection. Definitely worth the purchase for that game alone.

Just ordered that Asia FFX-2 and the repress of DJ Max for Vita. Hopefully I get both safe and sound, as expected. Pricey, but ehhh... whatever.

Got some digital stuff to get tomorrow, and then Blazblue probably. I think I'm gonna have to pass on Soul Sacrifice Delta from PlayAsia this month, which I'll certainly regret later.
 
Is it dumb that part of why I won't be getting the Vita 2000 is because they don't have any colours other than black in Australia?

It's too much work to buy something online and wait for it to come in the mail? I'm not seeing it.

And no it is not more money since I actually bought my Lime Green/White one from SuperUFO for cheaper than the price EB Games are charging for the local release here, including shipping that only took a couple of days.
 
Well, I like just going to the store and paying money honestly. Shipping to me is a minor hassle.

Also good tip on SuperUFO. Might check it out.

Considering the prices of games in Australia, is it really more money to import? Do they add taxes on top of the online price?
 
Well I was mostly going off play-asia prices, which all have an insane markup, than you factor in the shipping and all that.

SuperUFO seems super reasonable though.
 
We've been getting a ton of $199 Vita + Game deals these last 6 months though, so importing hasn't been a huge saving up until this point. Hopefully we get some good LCD Vita deals around Xmas :)
 
Finally got around to downloading Dragon Age:origins. It's funny I've played Kotor 1 and 2, the Mass Effect Trilogy when it first came out, and even Alpha Protocol yet I have never played dragon age before. Here's hoping the ps3 version runs decent.

In 2012 John Koller, SCEA’s Vice President of Hardware Marketing, talked about long term support in this article.

I actually agree with what most people have said before me though. In that the market has changed significantly to the point where 10-year life spans for consoles seems far too economically infeasible.

That said whether it is stated explicitly or not in general I've found that Sony tends to favour the long tail of a console even during generational overlap. You see it with the PS1, PS2, and now with the PS3 (I'm not sure where the PSP falls in because I'd say that the rampant piracy probably artificially expedited its viability on the market).

So yeah, we might not see support on the scale of the PSP, but enough to maintain the audience that the Vita has found.

Nor should they, as a handheld console it's still more than capable despite what some ports might suggest.
 
I'm loving Demon Gaze at the moment.

While the fanservice at the inn can be incredibly tedious, it's a tiny part of the game, and the meat of it, the dungeon crawling, is very strong. Using the gems to gain specific drops is a nice mechanic, as are the demon allies. The boss battles have been fun too.

It does seem to have a bit of a difficulty spike at the start while you are trying to figure things out, but if you stick with it it levels off sharply once you have got three party members and are working towards a fourth.

I've finished the first two areas (for now), am saving up for the fifth party member, and wondering whose room to put my nice new rug in. Strange game, but very entertaining.

Very interesting read since one of my micro professors worked and designed the chip inside the PSP.
 
I just read on the PSN official forums that I can buy PS3 games on the web store and then download them through the account management option, without having to access the console store which refuses to open. That should work, right?

I still hope it gets fixed, as I don't see how that could work for demos (unless they too get marked as purchased or something). Besides, it sucks not being able to browse the catalog from the console itself.

I practically never use the console store, lol. Just terrible! You can buy and and even queue downloads (including demos) directly from the webstore. Works wonderfully. On PS4 downloads trigger instantly so it's pretty cool. With PS3+Vita downloads start on the next boot up or whenever you've set PS+ to update.

Thanks, that's good to know! I want the problem fixed, of course, but at least there's a workaround. Sadly I skipped getting PS+ last night because of this, so I won't get Puppeteer and Uncharted 3, but whatever.

Do you know if this also works for demos? And can I do this without being a PS+ member?
 
Just started playing Catherine for the first time. This game is pretty ruthless even on normal. At least I can empathise with Vincent, some of those levels can really feel like a nightmare - especially when you get stuck in a loop.

I really enjoyed the single player of the first game. I actually quite enjoyed the second as well (co-op was where it was at for that game though), but they changed some conventions that definitely marred the experience. No weapon wheel in an Insomniac shooter = :-(
