Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 8: Put mii in, coach

If they'd confirm Red Shells are back, you could have a fun little Mario Kart items only battle.

I love the item variety this time around though.

Yeah, I really love that we can now have more item themed battles other than 'mario only' or 'pokeball only' battles. I think I categorized them a few threads back, but i'm bored so i'll do it again! I didn't do mario, because it's Mario Kart + more chaos. Roughly half the items are from mario! :p

Also, if sakurai implements an Assist Trophy switch (like item switch), this opens up a whole nother can of worms for themed battles. You can select Mario-only assists (like mah chompers!), Zelda ones, etc.

Still, it's this part that has me curious:

hope they've figured that out by now!

Yeah, I'm interested to see what items make the E3 demo cut. I'm assuming this one won't be present.

I'm going to cry if Jigglypuff isn't revealed by E3

Jigglypuff has been unlockable in every game and has never been revealed before release(correct me if i'm wrong). I wouldn't get your hopes up.

Edit: My bad, she was in the melee intro.

This is wayyyy moving the goalposts. I say keep it binary - if she's in, #TeamReal wins, if she's not playable, #TeamFake wins. No bonus points if she's an assist trophy, no freebies if Palutena texture data's buried in the disc hexadecimals, whatever.

NopeNopeNope
I joined TeamFake because it was about the leak itself, not Palutena, who I think has a high chance of getting in. If Palutena is in, and her model is significantly different, and we dont find any in-game/codes/models or have any developers stating the contrary, teamfake wins

Yeah, I'm on #teamreal, but if she looks completely different in game, the leak was probably fake. I'd be shocked if she wasn't playable though at this point.

Or she could have changed over time. Maybe the reason she hasn't been revealed yet is that her character model is constantly changing and evolving and they haven't 'finished' it yet. Unless that exact character model makes it into game, we won't know if the leak was real, but we can't disprove it either, unless the faker shows proof that it was faked OR sakurai and team explicitly deny the leak.

Eh... I'd still consider it likely fake lol

By this logic, any rumor posted on GameFAQs could be true just because something could have changed over time.

Just for the hell of it, this is my prediction/hope for the final roster organized by horizontal rows (pic to come maybe if I get to my PC). Confirmed characters are noted with *:

Robin (Probably Chrom)
Pikmin & Olimar*
Villager(s)*
Chorus Kids

Jigglypuff
Ivysaur
Squirtle
Charizard*
Mewtwo
Lucario*

Takamaru

Wolf
Captain Falcon
Snake
Sonic*
Mega Man*
Pac-Man

INTERESTING NOTES:

- 55 total characters. 5 rows of 11

- Extremely hopeful that Ivysaur and Squirtle aren't cut. They're honestly the only ones I'm worried about (and Snake a little). I can very easily see them coming back though. Sakurai hates hates hates cuts, so I don't imagine he'd take cutting unique characters lightly. More Pokemon cuts would bum me out though :(

- 55 characters just because that made the number of rows and colums nicer. If I had to cut 5 from the above: Ivysaur, Squirtle, Snake, Jill & Drill Dozer, Ridley. These are the biggest question marks. The first two because Charizard, Snake for reasons likely already discussed, Jill because she's kind of a wild card, and Ridley because many reasons.

- Jill & Drill Dozer probably stands out as an oddity. When I was constructing this roster I knew I would have between 50 and 55 characters, so I wanted to bring it up to the nice number of 55. Jill is honestly kind of filler here, but I think she makes sense. Rather unique playstyle, Assist Trophy graduate, female, human/robot duo. I'd love to see her in, but honestly on the roster above she could be exchanged with a number of wild card picks.

- No Dixie Kong, which is a bummer to me. The fact that Sakurai didn't reveal a DK newcomer for Tropical Freeze doesn't necessarily mean she's not in, but I think it's odd. TF was the comeback for Dixie in the new Retro DK games, and it would've been a great time for her reveal. But I could easily see her just being a secret character. In that case I would swap her in and Jill & Dill Dozer out.

- I just don't know about Ridley. The way Sakurai is teasing fans just doesn't sit right with me. I don't think anyone can definitively claim to have an overwhelmingly strong case here either way. But I'd love to see him so I've included him.

- Mewtwo returns! I expect him to be completely overhauled, maybe retaining most A moves and a couple specials.

- As much as I wish the Awakening rep (which I'm confident we'll get) would be a change up, I'm pretty sure it'll be Chrom. Plus, if I'm putting enough stock in the "leak" to include Chorus Kids, I can't ignore Chrom. If we happened to get Robin though, I think a gender switch a la WFT and Villager would be amazing, as well as a Grandmaster alt costume.

- Speaking of Chorus Kids, yes pleeeease. It seems like a very "Sakurai" thing to do, and I love love love this franchise. I think this may be my most wanted character now. If the RH character is the Chorus Kids, I'd be really interested to see how the three characters in one thing would work.

- I was very close to giving Jill's spot to a second Kid Icarus rep. It would probably be Hades if I were to pick one.

- No Zelda newcomer, which is a bummer. If I were to pick one, it'd likely be SS (or Hyrule Warriors please) Impa, or maaaaaybe Tingle. I still don't like Tingle though :B I just don't think there's room in this iteration for another Zelda character. That's just my interpretation though. I'm hoping they buff the hell out of Link and Ganondorf to at least make the Zelda cast feel fresh.

- Takamaru presents an neat parallel to Little Mac, and a very interesting playstyle. I think it'd be a cool way to bring back a more obscure retro character. Little Mac is a cool retro character, but his recent reboot makes him feel like less of a "pure" retro choice than I think Takamaru is. Anyway, Takamaru sounds like he'd be very interesting to play as, and I'd be excited to see what kind of look he got in Smash.

- I only halfway expect Pac-Man and Mii, but I would be stoked at their inclusion. Sakurai would make it work well. He hasn't let me down with any of the newcomers so far.

- Shulk seems like a no brainer to me, but I'm wary of thinking that about any particular newcomer. He was in a very successful new IP, and would make for an interesting twist on sword users with the Monado. I would love to see Shulk.

- Honestly, the only reason this roster looks so big is... well I mean it's kind of big, but it's also due to the separation of transformation characters. I like the separation for Zelda/Sheik and Samus/ZSSamus, but for PT I think it kinda stinks. PT was a cool way to represent the training part of Pokemon, and I think a simple removal of the stamina mechanic to avoid making players switch would've been fine. But what I was saying was that if transformations were still a thing, then this roster would only be 51 slots big, which isn't as shocking to the eyes.

I'm kind of confident in this roster, give or take a couple characters.

I'm going to cry if Jigglypuff isn't revealed by E3

I don't see her being revealed by E3 but I also don't see her not getting in. She is one of the original 12 and that seems to up her chances to return (although this is sakurai...) and was never revealed for brawl pre-launch anyways. To be fair Sakurai is never one for patterns but I still don't see her not making it

By this logic, any rumor posted on GameFAQs could be true just because something could have changed over time.
Exactly. People can just always fall back on: "Oh something changed during development."

I could sit here right now and claim Goku and Master Chief were planned on being in the game and then when they're not I can claim "Oh it changed during development."

How could you prove me wrong unless you got Sakurai himself to say something about it.

Unless we have insight into development, yeah. This is a bit different, since it's a screenshot, but basically yeah.

If someone was on the smash bros team and quit/was fired a month or so after it started, maybe they had insight into the initial plan for the game, but the final product was lacking several planned features/items/characters. It's entirely possible.

We discredit text rumors though, since they're so easy to make up. A leaked photo on the quality of the palutena leak is a bit more difficult to make up, though. That said, tons of things could have happened to her/the game since the picture was taken and the final release. To me, the only thing that will 100% prove it's real is if she is in the game and she looks nearly identical to the leak picture.

Since anything can happen, we have to assume all rumors are false unless proven true, but, we also have to accept that there is a possibility that the rumor MAY have been true at some point, but we'll never know.

#TeamReal
Same model and looks. Maybe a little tweaked but ultimately almost identical to those first screens.

Darn it Anura, I seriously thought you were qq posting.

But yeah, doubt Jiggly is cut.

That's the very definition of moving the goalposts, though. The claim being made was "these pictures are images of Palutena as she appears in the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros."

Anything else comes off as grasping at straws.

Hopefully she hasn't changed since that picture was taken and it gets proven true :)

I'd be willing to bet that if someone had leaked a picture of yoshi from the first month of development, it wouldn't look like yoshi does now. Even diddy kong is still using his brawl artwork for his portrait in the smash direct footage. Things change during development, which makes rumors and leaks really hard to prove or disprove.

Edit: I'm not saying that this is what the rules to GAF teamfake/teamreal are, but to me, it'll only be TRUE if it's nearly identical to in-game model, and it'll only be FAKE if it's proven fake by a faker or sakurai himself. Any other thing will make me say "I can't know for sure"

I never realized how many Mario Kart items the game has... Wow.
