iOS Gaming June 2014: A Comfy Beach of Sunshine and Screen Glare!

I like Zombie Stampede. It's a strategy-based zombie shooter.

You recruit heroes, train them, and then set them to fight in different environments. You can only place your heroes on pre-set spots and they fight automatically, unless you choose to have them concentrate their fire on a specific target.

It's free-to-play, but you can get along well without buying stuff. And Namco Bandai has been very good about creating specific themed events for the game to allow you to collect the coins and zombie juices you'll need to grow your fighters.

The game also has some wonderfully translated Engrish. And it's oddly charming, with stuff like characters getting into a front-loading washing machine and going for a spin when it's time for them to power up.

I really wanted to play DQVIII :( Just wish it ran great instead of... well, shit.

Do we know when Monster Hunter is out on EU?

What device to you game on? If you're on iPhone 5 or newer, or iPad 4, Air, or 2nd gen Mini, it should play well enough. Not as good as it could, maybe, but certainly worth it if you're a fan.

Having played a bit more, there's features I like:

- Full maps including dungeons, so you don't have to find the map in the dungeon like you do in PS2 version.
- Onscreen minimap
- On the level up screen, you can see what perks you get at what threshholds, so you can spend your skill points more wisely than the PS2 version.

If you've got a good device for it, it's worth at least picking up on sale.

I think the most interesting iOS release to me this week looks like Tales of Adventure Company. Not the greatest name, but from watching that video it looks like a cross between Disco Zoo's tetris-like shape finding and Dungelot's risk/reward block tapping/get the key and move to the next level gameplay, and given Dungelot 2's inability to exist in a playable, bug-free state and me having finished Disco Zoo a few weeks ago, this could potentially be something worth checking out. Other noteworthy differences seem to be it will be IAP-free, feature a party instead of just a single character like Dungelot uses, and see free content updates (I guess like many iOS games). Hope it ends up being fun.

Hello guys, second post. I want to talk about a game that is giving me tons of fun, called 99 Bricks Wizard Academy from WeirdBeard. It is a tower physics strategic building game with NO IAP that shares some similarities with Jenga -tower equilibrium, but instead of removing pieces, you have to add them- and with Knightmare Tower -the thrill of the ascent-.

There are different classes to play with -each one adding some story bits to the game new tutorials-, many upgrades like new robes, magic wands or your power ups. The power ups -and the physics engine- adds a strategic element to the game and used wisely can save your tower from falling down. These include lightning to remove unwanted blocks or concrete, to make them sticky to each other and many more. And to top it, there are evil rival wizards that are trying to crush your creation, like speeding up the blocks or making giang blocks.

Seriously, I didn't have this much fun since a long time. Its 2.99$ and so worth it.

Yeah, I've been hooked on 99 Bricks since I got it yesterday. Almost four hours and I rarely put that much time into a single IOS game in one day. This game is really addictive

The last building/balancing game I played was the Perfect Balance Collection. Besides Perfect and Imperfect Balance, I hadn't found any other similar games that really held my interest. 99 Bricks is my favorite in a long time.

When I first saw the game, I was curious if the magic and abilities would be gimmicky or not, but they add a cool strategic element to the tower building. Besides figuring out where you want to place blocks and dealing with evil wizard curses, you have to be think about other factors as well. Each height interval freezes the current state of your tower so you need to always be thinking ahead and not only keeping your tower steady, but also creating a solid foundation in the process. Using your limited abilities at the right time, on the right blocks, can be a lifesaver. And carelessly placing a block, only for it be frozen in an awkward position, can ruin a great run

And it's 100% premium, no IAP. You have to respect a developer who switches his game from F2P to premium/ (Originally the game soft launched as F2P, but the devs felt that format hurt the game so they switched to premium with no IAP and focused on making the game fun rather than focusing on monetization
The game was soft launched in the Netherlands as a F2P game. It got a very high number of downloads and amazing critical acclaim. However, financially the results were disappointing. We concluded F2P didn’t fit our game design and rather than pushing F2P any further, we chose to go premium without any IAP.

This felt like a weight being lifted off our shoulders. It was more about game design again: how to make the game as fun as possible, instead of looking at how to optimize for monetization.

After some radical changes to the structure of the game, to better fit the premium model, we’re finally ready to show it to you.

Agreed, spent my whole night playing 99 Bricks, its very rare that I play a game that many hours if its not Battlefield. You nailed the description, I agree with almost everything, More_Badass, looking forward to other games you recommend.

Am I going crazy or is Battleheart: Legacy soundtrack has a sample from "Bayram Gelmiş Neyime"? Specifically the part at 2:22. I can't find the game's soundtrack or any info on it but I was very very surprised to hear such a song in a game I am playing. O_o

Tales of the Adventure Company comes out tonight for $1.99. Looks nice.

Haven't tried, but the developer has a free web version to play here.

I'm addicted to Tiny Dice Dungeon. It's turn-based and really grindy — two things that I usually dislike, but in this case it's the perfect game for playing while I'm watching TV with my gf in the evenings.

I'm having a blast with Battleheart, despite initially hating how the game looked and how it seemed to be going too far away from the original's formula. Great game.

Yep... do you ever get uncut dice for free though? I bought the $5 starter pack.

Anybody get Pocket Harvest? Anyone enjoying it, and where does it stand amongst the two best, Game Dev Story and Mega Mall Story?

My GOTY so far just got even better.

Out There was just updated with new balance modifications.
Little things that will be immediately HUGE for experienced players, giving you much more control while retaining space as a deadly environment.

A bit easier now to get at least very close to the good endings.....now you can enjoy the IMHO best part of the game.....you will actively and desperately try to make contacts with alien species and gather very specific components.
I almost red completed the game on my first run.

Awesome stuff.

Dream Quest is a god tier hidden gem, it's ugly but deep and innovative.

Damn I really want to donate more to the poor dev so he can hire some competent artists.
Honestly I feel like there's no excuse to release a game with these assets. It's one thing having programmer art, but this is one of the most unprofessional looking games I've seen, and that's a very risky move when you release a game on a platform plagued with shovelware like mobile. I refuse to believe the developer couldn't have made it look better with more time, I'm not even talking about talent. It's just lazy and sloppy.

Couldnt agree more with you, it is also my GOTY so far, one of the best experiences I ever had, and without any combat at all, just your own decisions. Now it is the time for the blue ending. I cant wait for Mi-Closs to release the PC version with more content, and that will arrive to iOS at the same time. I guess it will take time.

Interesting, will have to check it out.

I did manage to get the green ending, thanks to a pimped out ship, and a very nerve wrecking episode of abandoning it for another ship for fuel requirements, stripping key elements off my beastly ship, coasting on the new ship desperately looking for resources, so I could go back and get/fix up my ride. Great game.

This just in, from capcpom

I'll add Tales of Adventure Company and 99 Bricks to the OP tomorrow/this weekend.

In case of use to anyone:

FREE X-Mirage(PC) Mirror iOS screen, stream movie, music and record iOS screen activities on Windows; like Airplay for the Apple TV but this works on your windows machine - (normally $16 lifetime)

http://www.x-mirage.com/giveaway20140601.html

Registration is dead simple they just need an email address for the Key to be sent.

Tried it last night from an iPad 3 and was very smooth on my PC, a lot better than some others I have tried. I tried riptide and Rayman Jungle as it was pretty good, very responsive, some stutter but my PC only has a simple graphics card and my ipad 3 has seen better days.

btw: license is for 1 year

some text from their site:

Mirroring. What you see on Mac/PC is what you show on iPhone, iPad or iPod.
X-Mirage turns your Mac and Windows PC into an AirPlay receiver for mirroring whatever on your iPhone, iPad or iPod screen – apps, games, photos, videos, presentations, websites and more to the biggec screen. X-Mirage receives AirPlay contents in full HD 1080p high-definition. Teachers can then mirror class material to computer, then to the projector, smartboard or HDTV while their fingers are moving on the iPad. Employees, businessmen just need to prepare presentations on any iPhone or iPad for mirroring to the Mac/PC when needed. For iOS app developers or designers, show your iOS app to the bigger computer screen for presentation to attract more people's attention.

Anyone else playing Folt? It's a gorgeous little puzzle game where in you try to clear the screen of the necessary goal by "folding" squares onto the play area. It's pretty neat, very easy on the eyes (the animations are GORGEOUS), and gets quite complex once you beat the first 15 stages. Oh, and it's free. Highly, highly, highly recommend this game.

Nice to see me and Frost aren't the only one's enjoying 99 Bricks. Seems like it's getting overlooked by sites, which is a shame IMO

I love how physics don't always apply here, compared to other tower building games. It's always cool when you finally fail and then the camera zooms out and you see how insane your tower looks.

Yep, thank you so much for the recommendation. But how hard the class challenges get so fast is kind of frustrating. 500m without rotating? wtf?

But I know what you mean about the crazy tower appearances. Just tweeted this one to Robert Ashley, which prompted him to download 99 Bricks and the developers to comment on how lucky I got:

This game is pure genius, and the happiest $3 I've spent in a long time.

Apple now has a way for users of Made-for-iPhone/iPad game controllers to view a master list of supported games from the App Store, but it will first require the controller makers to update and issue firmware updates to their controllers.

....

The feature works much like the App Match feature Apple already offers, which prompts users when connecting an accessory to download a companion app or view compatible apps on the App Store. Apple has recently added the same ability for manufacturers creating MFi game controllers. Rather than sending users to a specific app, Apple says implementing the feature will prompt users to visit an Apple maintained list of supported controller games.

The second piece of the puzzle will likely be for make that new Apple maintained list of supported controller games accessible via the App Store, but it’s unclear if Apple has plans for that.

All controllers will presumably have to receive a firmware update to take advantage , which all are required to be capable of via iOS or Mac. It doesn’t appear any of the MFi controllers have yet updated.

Apple is also introducing other features for MFi game controllers this year including a new Controller Forwarding feature that will turn iPhone’s into a controller for Macs and iPads.

Don't know why they can't just add a flag to the app store and have a games with controllers section.

Yes you can find them in chests and I'm pretty sure I've also had one drop from a monster that I overkilled. They are really rare though.

Sigh, mostly free to play stuff...again. :(
If you don't mind tilt controls and enjoy arena shooters, I recommend checking out Quadblast
Trailer

Regarding the F2P element, it's fair and well balanced,, no timers, only one currency. And there'a $1.99 doubler that removes ads

As for the game itself, the controls are very finely-tuned and keep the screen uncluttered. You maneuver by tilting, fire your beam by swiping to indicate the direction. The tilt controls are responsive and precise and the swipe-to-fire gives the gameplay an almost rhythmic pace. You can upgrade your ship, increases its speed, the width of its beam, slow motion. While the enemies aren't varied at all (the developer is aware of this and is considering adding new enemies in updates) the gameplay itself, the evasion and blowing enemies away, is fast, challenging, and satisfying.

For anyone playing 99 Bricks, do you know how to get multipliers? One of my tasks is to get a 2x multiplier with a gold brick but I've never gotten any multipliers.

I played it. It's great-starts easy and gets very challenging. Great idea for a game.

The game that is along the lines of RollerCoaster Tycoon and also has a 4 in the name got a discount.

Still not free after two months. Pretty impressive.

I know it's basically a non-news but....according to yesterday CD Projekt Witcher conference....the boardgame is about to enter closed beta on PC....so maybe it's not that far away.

I was hoping for a E3/next week publishing.... :(

Apparently it has cross multiplayer (surely between GOG and Steam editions...possibily iOS too).

What ios games are you playing ATM pitta? I saw you started battleheart how's it going? I am a level 14 ranger/bard and am enjoying a lot although it has got a tad grindy as of late.

Kickstarter is up for the digital version of Twilight Struggle, Playdek will be handling it:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/559431060/twilight-struggle-digital-edition

My favorite boardgame of all time and has been on top of the rankings at BGG for the past 3 and half years or so. Release is almost a year out though, March 2015.

sounds like they'll be charging for online play - is that normal with digital boardgames?

I'd like to see an ipad version of X-wing

The new game of Gameloft is quite fun, called Rival Knights. It is a medieval lance competition game. IAPs are quite okay, you can compete in daily competitions and win an substantial amount of cash. Played over 2 hours and got enough money to buy the best equipment .
