So hyped! almost there!
I'm sure with all the footage we will have some deep analysis of playstyles
Also I hope Nintendo takes notes of issues that people may find in order to balance the game a little more...

How long did the Brawl and Melee Metagames take to solidify?
I'm not sure that balance can be determined by 1 tournament or by random people playing at E3. *MAYBE* if little mac wins by a humongous margin against people who are marth masters, maybe! But mostly doubtful.
The next Ike pic needs to reveal a shirtless alt for him.
I (and I'm sure many fangirls) would pay money to see it.

Hoping tonight's update is something fantastic, considering we're so close to E3 and all.
Wasn't it at least a year before people figured out wave dashing, and then a year + before DI became a popular thing? Brawl seemed to be about a year, too. Ice climbers were bottom tier for both games until recently, right? I think a lot of that is people adapting to how the game is.
I think obvious broken things can be fixed within 6 months (like metaknight was obviously broken early on), but you can't just patch something every other month.

Honestly, if Ridley isn't playable, Sakurai needs to get that out of the way before E3. That's not the kind of thing you reveal there, it'll ruin the whole event for a lot of people. In fact, assuming he's not in, Sakurai should have shown Ridley in all his stage hazard glory a long time ago.Ridley teaser today with a caption saying "See you at E3"
It's worthless if there's no shirtless Little Mac and Male Fit Trainer with him.The next Ike pic needs to reveal a shirtless alt for him.

MK was not found to be OP until after the first 6-9 months of the game. At first, Snake, Falco and DDD were the hot picks for top characters -- particularly because of DDD's and Falco's chaingrabs. For Snake, it was because of ridiculous damage output and insanely huge hitboxes.
The meta does not advance that fast, though for Smash 4 things could be pretty different because people know what to look for now whereas with Brawl it was more about discovering what "didn't work" vs what "worked". Lots of tech was discovered fairly early on for Brawl -- people sort of got obsessive with trying to find tech rather than advance characters/work on figuring out characters because they wanted to try and find something akin to wavedashing. As we all know, that never happened. In a way, Brawl's meta sort of suffered because of that mentality. But it was too late at that point (the point where people gave up on that) because MK became played by at least a majority of the top players.
ICs were actually pretty good in '04-'06 (switching to Melee here), even without wobbling (wobbling was discovered around that time, too, though ChuDat didn't really use it back then afaik). ICs became dominant in Brawl more recently, definitely (like 2011-2013 recently, but they've had their CGs since at least '09). ICs CGs in Brawl were discovered really early on and that was due in part because of how easy they are to perform (partly because of the 10 frames of buffer Brawl allots you for inputs). I don't know why they weren't as dominant in that timeframe but I think it's because no one who was good or consistent enough with them played them at the time and now there's multiple people who play them at a high level.
Back in '09 there were maybe like two notable ICs mains for Brawl, Lain (a Midwest player) and Hylian (another Midwest player). And ChuDat switched to Kirby for Brawl in order to not mess with his Melee ICs. They're not a very popular character to play because of how tricky and weird they are -- it's two characters and while on the surface it looks easy to play them they rely heavily on being able to desync them. Which if you're not used to that sort of thing, it's very offputting and time consuming to learn when you could just pick someone like Snake/MK and win ezpz (at least in '08-'10).
The point is, it's best not to make any assumptions about how the meta will develop. For sure things will be figured out early on but some things take at least a year to fully show themselves as being dumb. And by that point developer support for patches may be out of the question (I mean we ARE talking about Nintendo here...)
