Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 8: Put mii in, coach

We need more Ike Pics
Samurai plsss

So hyped! almost there!

I'm sure with all the footage we will have some deep analysis of playstyles

Also I hope Nintendo takes notes of issues that people may find in order to balance the game a little more...

I'm not sure that balance can be determined by 1 tournament or by random people playing at E3. *MAYBE* if little mac wins by a humongous margin against people who are marth masters, maybe! But mostly doubtful.

Amazon Australia doesn't exist though.

I managed to get a hold of some controllers in decent condition from gumtree for $25 each, it's definitely worth checking every few days for people selling lots and inquiring about individual controllers.
Especially since the most common issue seems to be that the rubber on the left analog stick is messed up, which is a real easy fix.

How long did the Brawl and Melee Metagames take to solidify?

Wasn't it at least a year before people figured out wave dashing, and then a year + before DI became a popular thing? Brawl seemed to be about a year, too. Ice climbers were bottom tier for both games until recently, right? I think a lot of that is people adapting to how the game is.

I think obvious broken things can be fixed within 6 months (like metaknight was obviously broken early on), but you can't just patch something every other month.

Well it could help, this is rare for Nintendo to bring people to play it right? So I hope the do analyze everything

The next Ike pic needs to reveal a shirtless alt for him.

I (and I'm sure many fangirls) would pay money to see it.

HAHAHA I would like more something like a black armor so he can be the Guts of smash! :)

MK was not found to be OP until after the first 6-9 months of the game. At first, Snake, Falco and DDD were the hot picks for top characters -- particularly because of DDD's and Falco's chaingrabs. For Snake, it was because of ridiculous damage output and insanely huge hitboxes.

The meta does not advance that fast, though for Smash 4 things could be pretty different because people know what to look for now whereas with Brawl it was more about discovering what "didn't work" vs what "worked". Lots of tech was discovered fairly early on for Brawl -- people sort of got obsessive with trying to find tech rather than advance characters/work on figuring out characters because they wanted to try and find something akin to wavedashing. As we all know, that never happened. In a way, Brawl's meta sort of suffered because of that mentality. But it was too late at that point (the point where people gave up on that) because MK became played by at least a majority of the top players. Actually not just top players but even mid level players -- the character was everywhere (and still is).

ICs were actually pretty good in '04-'06 (switching to Melee here), even without wobbling (wobbling was discovered around that time, too, though ChuDat didn't really use it back then afaik). ICs became dominant in Brawl more recently, definitely (like 2011-2013 recently, but they've had their CGs since at least '09). ICs CGs in Brawl were discovered really early on and that was due in part because of how easy they are to perform (partly because of the 10 frames of buffer Brawl allots you for inputs). I don't know why they weren't as dominant in that timeframe but I think it's because no one who was good or consistent enough with them played them at the time and now there's multiple people who play them at a high level.

Back in '09 there were maybe like two notable ICs mains for Brawl, Lain (a Midwest player) and Hylian (another Midwest player). And ChuDat switched to Kirby for Brawl in order to not mess with his Melee ICs. They're not a very popular character to play because of how tricky and weird they are -- it's two characters and while on the surface it looks easy to play them they rely heavily on being able to desync them. Which if you're not used to that sort of thing, it's very offputting and time consuming to learn when you could just pick someone like Snake/MK and win ezpz (at least in '08-'10).

I suppose maybe the reason in Brawl they're much more common now is because there's less character variety. ICs CGs in Brawl differ in timing depending on the character you're facing so now if you only have to prepare for like 5 characters vs 35... I suppose the consistency is much easier in that sense. Still, they're a very unpopular character to begin with so...

The point is, it's best not to make any assumptions about how the meta will develop. For sure things will be figured out early on but some things take at least a year to fully show themselves as being dumb. And by that point developer support for patches may be out of the question (I mean we ARE talking about Nintendo here...)

Ridley teaser today with a caption saying "See you at E3"
Honestly, if Ridley isn't playable, Sakurai needs to get that out of the way before E3. That's not the kind of thing you reveal there, it'll ruin the whole event for a lot of people. In fact, assuming he's not in, Sakurai should have shown Ridley in all his stage hazard glory a long time ago.

However, that very reasoning could mean that Ridley is in fact playable, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Cool! Thanks for the write up! Yeah, unfortunately, unless something is OBVIOUSLY broken and exploitable, like an infinite chaingrab or combo or something that's a guaranteed KO 99% of the time, I don't see too many balance patches. I think if they look at for glory stats and see that little mac or something is in first place by a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE margin, they might look into WHY. But unless something REALLY stands out, i doubt too many balance changes can be made that won't be some knee-jerk reaction which could permanently ruin a character.

As far as alts I'd like to see:

Mario - Doc Mario
It'd be a nice homage. Not as a separate character though.

Peach - Sports Peach
I think her tennis clothes or something would be a nice outfit for her. The shorts and the tank and her hair in a ponytail.

Rosalina - Biker Rosalina
I love Rosie's biker jumpsuit.

Toon Link - Outset Link
Self-explanatory I think. Plenty to choose from but this is my favorite.

Ness - Pajamas Ness
YESSSSSS
