Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 8: Put mii in, coach

Stage looks nice visually, but... is it seriously ANOTHER walkoff? Y'know, there's a reason why the original SSB only had one walkoff stage to its name - they're kinda contrary to the point of SSB's gameplay. :s

we sure seem to have a lot of walk-offs this time

Looks pretty at least. Seems slightly generic, but if it's a recurring location like you guys say then I guess I'll buy it.

Yeah this is the only thing bumming me out about smash 4 so far. Everything else looks dope

Yeah, I think that since sakurai created the 'final destination mode', he has been able to justify doing less 'traditional' stages. :/ Oh well. I really with there was a 'battlefield' mode for all of these, too. Or a 'kinda like battlefield, but the platforms are laid out slightly differently.'

I think you're creating the problem by yourselves by adding up stages from two versions of the game. The only other walk off stages in the Wii U version are Wii Fit and Mario Galaxy.

And the Boxing Ring and Skyloft - though the latter will only have temporary walkoff edges.

I don't know if adding up the stages to make a general assumption about the two games' content is a bad thing, though, since we'll only know a handful of the stages before release and Sakurai would presumably want to reveal a variety of stages for the two games, so if he puts out, say, 25% walkoff stages (this is not the actual percent) then it's not unreasonable to assume that each individual game will have roughly that percentage of walkoff stages.

One of my saddest thoughts is 'What if the 3DS version has the best stage(s) but the Wii U version is my favorite?'

I actually guessed something right for once?

Well it almost makes up for the infestation of jumping spiders I just found.

E3 plz com fastr

Boxing Ring is a walkoff stage? I remember there was a cutscene in the trailers showing someone walking outside of the ring, but have we seen that in gameplay?

Skyloft isn't really the same though. The walk offs being temporary pretty much kills their main problem.

Brawl had 13 stages where the stage was a walk off or parts of the stage were walk offs.

Are walkoffs still necessarily a fairness problem? Regardless, I agree that they aren't much fun. Takes away the whole fun of the edge guarding game. But if Dedede's down throw is changed, and Fox (obviously) can't waveshine, are walk offs still automatically banned?

This is why I am crossing my fingers for the (unlikely) chance of a "3DS stage pack" DLC of some sort for the Wii U. I don't like the idea of the console version of Smash Bros. not being the definitive version.

It also had the worst-designed set of stages in the entire series, and having too many walkoffs contributed to that.

I thought edge-guarding was done away with already?

This seriously needs to be on every page leading up to the day.

Edge guarding is more than just edge hogging, in any case. Even if edge hogging has been nerfed or removed (rest in peace, sweet prince) edge guarding will be as important as ever.

I know, close enough, right?

Nah, Brawl's edge guarding isn't too bad. Characters still have limited options as they're falling back on, and edge hogging stuff can still happen if you grab at the right time. No idea how 4 works yet, really, just that it's changed.

Let's do it~. Or perhaps hist post it daily!

I wish Pokken is real
Who knows. Onit E3 can decide.

It's been.. changed. We just don't know how. We've made assumptions, but some assume that if you have a higher percentage you can still edge guard.
I see.

dat chiseled jawline
Marth likes great in the shot too.

Treasure the anticipation, for this is the last pre-Smash E3 we'll have for a long time.

A tempting proposition...

But how will I finish more backlog games beforehand?
!!!! Good point. Can one will away the weekend yet tell self to game as well? =0

Ah. Hoping it'll be more manageable and not broken.

Seriously considering freezing myself from here to Monday.
Might just play games all weekend to distract from the hype.

Maybe this stage will actually end up being like the Metal Gear Solid stage. Namely, you can only kill someone off the top of the screen, unless maybe you knock down one of the side walls. Would fit the Colosseum theme better I think, since it's an enclosed ring.

Very nice.

Call me crazy, but I miss the blocky graphics of the original Smash Bros.

Same. Sometimes I wish there were games that tried to emulate that low poly look of the N64. but I understand why people don't.

Oh and Smash 64 still has the best intro of the franchise.

We need more Ike Pics
Samurai plsss

So hyped! almost there!

I'm sure with all the footage we will have some deep analysis of playstyles

Also I hope Nintendo takes notes of issues that people may find in order to balance the game a little more...
Quick, ask for something cool on Monday! He's listening to you.

I still want N64 models as alternate costumes for the original 12 vets.

Blast to the past:

IGN review for Super Smash Bros on N64

Presentation - 8
12 famous mascot characters and plenty of locations based on famous Nintendo franchises.
Graphics - 8
Nice graphical effects and well-drawn backgrounds. On the other hand, low poly models, some ugly textures and pixelated sprite objects.
Sound - 8
Many of Nintendo's most famous melodies and sound effects return. Points off for NOA's unnecessary sound editing.
Gameplay - 9
Easy to pick up, great controls and simple yet addictive gameplay. Just don't expect a fighting game in the traditional sense.
Lasting Appeal - 8
The one-player mode is the game's biggest weakness, but the multiplayer battles rock.

OVERALL - 8.5 -Great (out of 10, not an average)

Edit: First ever video i saw of smash bros. The video that changed EVERYTHING for me. > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2xmMxx9KZ8

I don't think you'll need to worry about the 3ds version being definitive due to the controls. That said, I don't like that we're missing out on some of the stages on both versions.

Posting my list of demo questions again. I'm confident that with nintendo world playing the game for 50+ hours all of these should get answered.

  31. Luma colors? Why is it sometimes a different color? Random?

  33. Does Samus' bomb (down+B) explode on contact, or on a timer? (requested by Karsticles)
  34. Why does Zelda's phantom slash have 2 different types of slashes? Does it just just depend on how long you charge it?
  35. How does Zelda's phantom slash work in the air? Can you charge it?

  6. Final Smash for Ike
  7. Ike's Side B (is it the same?)
  8. What does the P flag do?
  9. What do the galaga bugs do?
  10. Can you attack with the super leaf/raccoon tail?

Please feel free to Direct message me or quote this and i'll try to add any additional questions we need answered.

Once E3 is here, i'll try to update the list and answer the questions as we know them.

I guarantee you the Colosseum will have some kind of stage boss. It's too bland otherwise, and I think Sakurai is throwing quirks into all the levels because now he can do FD mode.

I was thinking that too. I mean, he does say that platforms appear, but I think a stage boss would be fitting... I just can't think of what. You never typically fought monsters or beasts in the colosseum. Maybe random fire emblem vets come in and fight?

Me too! It is a shame there are so many indie games emulating the look of of 8/16-bits games, but there are barely games doing the same with the low poly visual of the 32-bits generation.

I want alternate low poly costumes for all characters. I would love to see how certain Melee/Brawl/4 characters would look with the visuals of the first game.

Probably a Dark Dragon. Series is full of 'em.

I like the "If Pyrosphere is playable, what are Ridley's boss mechanics?" one haha

Also, wouldn't Grima be a major reoccuring Fire Emblem boss who makes sense to be in a FE1 stage? I wouldn't be surprised if that's what we got.
