The only odd thing is the timing. Releasing word of its cancellation makes a lot more sense a week (or more) before E3 than killing your buzz with it post-E3 or, even worse, announcing it during E3.

Umm, I think you might have made a mistake (or probably IGN changed the title), the article title doesn't have the word 'official' in it, nor does it quote any official statement.
Let's wait until there's an actual official statement.
