Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

Welp, I have another.

I can't stand controller whiners. Everytime someone says they hate a specific controller, I just think they must have been born with three fingers because adapting to a controller has never been an issue for me or any of the people I've met. It seems like a ridiculous excuse to me.

"Fun" games being classified as non-cinematic game's these days. It's the most lazy argument out there because cinematic games can be and are fun. Fun is subjective and shouldn't be used to separate types of mediums.

I don't get how anyone can play PC shooters, third person games, and sports games with a M/kb. I feel all PC games should be played with some type of controller.

Gears of wars should not be a gold standard used to compare any third person shooter.

To add to this - I can't believe people hate the DS3 and love the DS4 or vice versa. They are not that different.... N64 and SNES controller are way different, even the N64 to gamecube controller are way different, but DS3 and DS4 are pretty close. whynotboth.jpg

My controversial gaming opinion - Western games are not as fun, because I think they are made for as wide an audience as possible to maximise revenue, thats why most of them are so basic, you are just moving and shooting in the majority of them. Even something that should be really complex like Skyrim, is incredibly basic in its gameplay mechanics.

Japanese games are way more niche, and assume the audience can play more complicated games. I read somewhere they design them for 14 year olds, whereas Western games are designed for 8 year olds even though the genres in Western games can be more mature. The success of games doesn't necessarily mean its a good game.

Not my opinion, my friend recently told me he doesn't like Witcher, calls it "a white man's game with medieval Yurop up it's ass" and that the appeal to a wider audience is limited by this fact. I didn't say anything not to hurt his feelings.

Most game stories, even ones that attempt to do something different like The Last Of Us and BioShock Infinite, are crudely written power fantasies designed in mind for high school kids and younger. (I always joke with people who don't play games that JRPG's are 'high school kids save the world' or FPS are 'enlisted guy does amazing things and stuff blow up.') I would love to see a mainstream AAA, retail released game that treats its audience as if they are above the age of 18 and have an IQ above 100.

EDIT: There are games out there that do that, just not the AAA blockbusters.

I don't get it. It irks me when people are like, "It makes my hand cramp" like what? How long are you playing that your hand are cramping? I'm a girl and I may have small hands but I've seen guys with huge hands work iPhones and never complain as much as gamers when it comes to controllers. The ergonomics of it is not that difficult to understand or difficult to adapt to. To me, I think they just suck at video games and that the excuse, "The controller". For others who may have hand issues or medical problems, that is the only exception.

I think consoles are good for the PC market as they help set a baseline that means you don't need to expensively upgrade your system too often. Back when there were more PC exclusive devs in the pre 360 days the speed of inflation with the minimum required specs was too much.

Metroid: Other M is actually a really good game and doesn't deserve half the hate it gets.

(I'd been putting off playing it for years due to the reputation it had... Finally completed it for the first time last week and was pleasantly surprised by it.)

Sony's new IPs from last gen consistently have had amazing presentation but horribly, horribly boring gameplay. I feel though some people are willing to overlook anything if the game is pretty enough.

Rm88 said it much better.

This is really taste-dependent.

Sony has clearly drank the oh so cinematic Kool-Aid recently, and the exceptions (LBP, MNR, PSASBR, Knack) are pretty weak IMO. I can seen why people would love stuff like Infamous, TLOU, Uncharted, etc. - but that's basically the kind of games I don't play on any system. And it's no wonder the people who approach games like movies would think it's outrageous that Nintendo can keep using their old IPs, lol.

Yup, thats how I feel.

This Policentrism MUST END #downwithendlessslavicgametropes

Sony abandonment of the middle tier will bite them in the ass. Their studios are just not good enough to pump out AAA crap that sell enough to make their money back.

I used to appreciate that they would go out on a limb, but if they are jumping both feet into the AAA pool, they are middle tier.

Everything being AAA fucking sucks.

Now this I can agree with. I often wonder if many people who play AAA games, are between the ages of 20 and 30, and laud them as the New Cinema and whatnot, have, well, ever read a book. Or watched a movie that isn't written/directed by Michael Bay.

I'm not even saying that it's bad as such. I like a few Michael Bay movies. But there's a lot of hype for game stories, whether indie or AAA, being fabulous when much of the time they're not that special. For example, for all that TLOU has those Naughty Dog production values and emotive characters, I couldn't get over it being another excuse for zombie apocalypse fare. Containing the usual plot beats, without even really a stylistic aspect to freshen things up. Uncharted is a lot more engaging as a storytelling vehicle, as nobody really does halfway decent Indiana Jones in gaming.

Spec Ops the Line has the most interesting story and Deadly Premonition had the most interesting.... if totally inept execution - games that are infinitely more interesting than The Last of Us, which is just another zombie story with a dash of CHILDISCURE in the mix and yet is paraded as the second coming of video game christ.

You realize that M/KB is a (type of) controller too, right?

You've literally become a 'controller whiner' in the space of one post.

And, yes, although it might not fit your definition of controller, I'd argue it is no less legitimate as a control interface and to dismiss it outright is as narrow-minded as the people you describe

The Last of Us is a boring game with a boring story.
All FPS games bore me to death.
GTA V and Skyrim are boring, glitchy and ugly. Skyrim can look pretty good with mods though.
Tomb Raider 2013 is the best Tomb Raider.
Super Mario 3D World is the best 3D Mario, and I hope they never go back to Super Mario 64's style.

I like you.

Xenoblade is the worst Xeno game, the gameplay is FFXII on stupid, Nintendo was right to not want to bring it over, and people who claim to love it are either suffering from a form of gaming Stockholm Syndrome, wherein it's difficult to admit the op rainfall was a mistake, or want to be contrary toward the vastly superior FFXIII.

Not kidding. Hate all you want.

you are the reason why we have lightning as a character you are bad and should feel bad about that

Platforming elements should stay out of genres other than platforming games.

I have been gaming since the early 90s and I detest platformers, always have and they've been creeping into other genres. I don't want to go through an intense battle and then be met with a ledge jumping challenge, that's not a warriors death.

Mass efect was a terrible game, in terms of gameplay. Absolutely loved the sequels though.

Ffxii was a step back for the series, neither turn based or full action, and the optional bosses were just insane, having a boss battle that lasts ove 3 hours? Seriously???

i understand the hate for mass effect but how could you like 3 at all?

First Person Games should NOT be made anymore..
It should just die as a genre..

ImOkWithThis.jpg

Only thing I really have against CoD is it's first person. I probably still wouldn't pay for it, but I'd at least play it when my friends used to spam the crap out of it.

Okay, another go for me:

I genuinely believe that people emotionally affected by games (Whether it's the good story, the characters, whatever) are idiots.

Storytelling in video games will always stay shit no matter what.

what if I'm hype as fuck reeling from something that just happened in Street Fighter

Persona 4 is by far the worst game in the SMT franchise and its fighting game sequel is sooooo much better.

FF 13 is the best FF in what is a mediocre series.
-FF9's final boss fight was so bad I turned it off in the middle of it and deleted my save file. To this day, never replayed the game or watched the ending.

Mass Effect 1-3 is so so horrible.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is the best Metal Gear game in the franchise

Platinum Games is the best gaming company in the market right now

Square Enix > Squaresoft

Tales of Graces F has the best combat system of any RPG ever.

SotC was pretty average. This one could be on me though since I'm not a fan at all of giant sized bosses.

That being said, any game can be made 100x better by having human sized bosses, or rival fights like DmC 3, Bayo, Kingdom Hearts, etc:

I think the Wii U is awesome and I love the tablet

I have no desire to play another Gears of War, God of War, or Uncharted. Let them die

The Lat of Us was merely an OK game

GOTY 2013 should have been Fire Emblem Awakening

The Xbox One's controller bumpers are fine

Both the PS4 and Xbox One's UI's are hot garbage

People VASTLY overrate "great" storytelling in video games. Even a "great" video game story is more than likely crappy writing that wouldn't hold your attention outside the context of a game

Watch Dogs is a piece of shit

The Infamous series has never been good

Call of Duty (outside of Ghosts) is simply more fun to play than Battlefield

What? there's controversial opinions and then there's just being wrong. Have you played the Mother series? 999? Ace Attorney? There's way more, but really, some stories are really good and easily worth the emotional investment.

The average video game consumer is an idiot, and a big reason why big companies like EA or Ubisoft can practice unethical buisness and lie o us consumers.

I haven't played them, so I can't form any opinions on them. Maybe someday, I should give them a shot.

I'm really curious of what type of games you play, because I know that most games have shit stories, but there's some amazing games that I consider to be simply amazing story wise.

Most of the "mainstream" games that sell tons usually have really bad stories and create this image that games are really bad at storytelling... but not every writer is crap like David Cage.

Let's play Videogame Mad Libs!

Here's the first one:

  • GAF, I'm sorry, but _____[video game series]_____ is just _____[another series]_____ with _____[common noun]_____!
Jindrax, it's your turn!

Gaf I'm sorry.
But final fantasy is just Pokemon with people

More I could think of:

- Monster Hunter is a nice idea turned mediocre by the ridiculous grinding and farming it requires. Almost every single game mechanic outside of combat is designed to be tediuous and time consuming just for the sake of making the game longer. It's worse than many MMORPG's in the grinding department with none of the advantages of the genre

-Persona is worse than the main Shin megami tensei franchise in basically every sense. It's SMT for the casual crowd by taking away the focus on exploration, good level design and challenging combat and replacing it with what feels like a mix of the sims and a dating simulator.

-For the daily use of "games on the go" (in the subway/bus, in a line at the bank, in some sort of waiting room, bathroom, etc) mobile games are far superior to handheld games as they are truly designed to be easy to just drop-in drop-out and be played during short periods of time.

- MGS 3 has the worst story in the franchise. Boring, predictable and cheesy on a whole new level. Gameplay is the best in the franchise though

-I hate 8-bit/retro style graphics in indie games. And no, I'm not saying indie games should have expensive 3D graphics, there are tons of examples of games made by very small teams (sometimes just 1 person) that look great. Even if you are making a 2D sprite based game there are ways to make it look modern/cleaner/HD.
