2014 Microsoft E3 Conference

It's great, don't get me wrong. But it feels a little repetitive at best.

So I presume you have played it? Because I believe what they showed us were demo's where they were doing pretty random stuff.

So many E3 conferences are full of boring content. I give MS a lot of credit for cutting all that out and just showing off games.

Some of them were just the typical CG bullshit trailers we're used to, but at least they didn't have 5-7 minutes of talk up from someone with no personality beforehand.

since I was never one of the "omg, everything must be games 24/7" type of folks, I actually kinda wish some new system/OS features were announced/detailed. Even if not directly at the conference, at least on news.xbox.com somewhere. Things like the retail devkits, bringing back digital game features, any xbox live improvements, etc.

What did you feel it was missing?

I though the shooting and some of the transitions looked really janky , but it's stuff that can and likely will be polished.

And while I enjoyed the games , where was the announcements of the big fall OS updates/ upcoming features ? Moved to something like Gamescom ?

People might not like the content of this conference (though I honestly think there should be something there for everyone), but its format has been perfect (to the point -games-, no bullshit nor long stupid speeches).

I'm personally not very excited for most of the exclusives shown, except for Phantom Dust 2 and Scalebound (and the latter just because P* is developing it, because I'm not a huge fan of the monsters setting), but that was a very good show. Well done, Phil Spencer.

What did you feel it was missing?

I don't know. It looks fun as heck and I'm actually regaining some faith in Insomniac but I just can't put my finger on it. I'm thinking maybe the animations? I'll probably watch the gaemplay a few more times. The protagonist was also way, way too over the top to the point of getting a bit annoying.

That seems to be happening every month now. Always something they are adding and tweaking but I agree on the Devkit side. Really want to know more about that and their overall ID@Xbox plans.

Thought this was a very solid conference, one of the better ones MS did. Kamiya's game notwithstanding there was very little I was overly interested in, just shooters and racers as you'd might expect from MS. However, everything was about games and there were lots of them. PG game and a few ID@Xbox games looked nice. I missed the Ghibli thing so have to look at that later. 7.

The pacing of the conference was fantastic

That was a really good conference I am looking forward to scale bound. However should I try the original phantom dust or had it aged poorly? Also did they have a date on crackdown or are we looking at late 2015?

If you can find it, you may as well give it a shot. Fairly niche game but full of style. Hopefully the remake shows people what made it fun for fans who got into it.

With all due respect, the CG trailers aren't really games (by which most people mean gameplay). They're promises of games.

They are just a "we are developing this game buy we can't show it yet", Crackdown CG trailer for me was enough proof that they are doing it.

Besides, E3 has always been a CG trailer festival, I don't understand why is everyone so upset, a lo of companies sell their games basically on CG trailers, and has been like that for the past 15 years...

Just finished their show, really enjoyed it. Not gonna give a score or anything because I don't rate everything I can, but it's up there with other good xbox conferences. Sunset overdrive looks better every time I see it, looks fun. It certainly didn't look like a R&C clone, not sure where thats from. Scalebound looked good for a short trailer, it didn't show anything to get hyped for but it's platinum and that is good enough to be excited for me. Ori was the surprise of the show for me, it looked stunning. Loved that trailer. Inside looked good as well.

Overall it was good, I don't know why but my expectations were really low for this, glad MS showed up and did a good job. Not really enough to go out and buy a console, but good enough to raise my interest in an xbone. Now, on to EA's conference! Playing catch up sucks.

You're gonna love the Sunset Overdrive trailer. It's great. The Halo Collection is pretty amazing as well. ntkrnl really hurt anything being a surprise, though.

Crackdown was announced, there was lots of CG. I thought it was a good presser, but the leaks hurt them something fierce. Without those, it would have been a much better presser. As it stands, it felt relatively safe with no real bombs.

Oh and there's some spectacular DLC for Dead Rising 3.

Well paced conference with some nice nods like Playdeads new game and Ori and The Blind Forest.

If you read the leaks on this forum, you were never really shocked. It was the spoiler effect in full force. It was boring for me.

Thanks guys. Always sucks when I have to miss being -there- for the reactions, but this summed it up for me. Don't have the time to read the topic with all the updates i have to make haha

That might get it to a 5 for me. Not saying that this conference was below a 7, it's what I would give it. Just the general principle of only games equals a 7 is what I disagree with.

That's not how it works. Them not doing stuff they shouldn't in the first place doesn't grant them points.

I think this is going on way too much.

Just because this years is better than the previous 3 which were littered with a ton of Kinect footage (god, remember when people were eating up the Future Soldier voice stuff) doesn't mean the conference was good.

Was it paced well? sure
Were there games shown? yes
IMO was there enough next gen gameplay to warrant giving them a good grade? Not to me.

I give them a 7 if it has to be a number grade.

To be honest, I wish they would have dropped some of the 3rd party segments and actually done some talking about some future OS updates.

The reason there was so much CGI was because MS showed games years away from being finished. It was clearly a deliberate move to show games games games, and it's only possible to do that if you're going to show pretty much the whole content pipeline.

At the same time I don't think Crackdown, Phantom Dust, and all-you-can-eat Halo will really resonate strongly outside those who have owned Xboxes in the past. It's basically a lineup designed to shore up the support of existing and previous customers. The whole software strategy can be summed up in two words: fan service.

In E3 terms though it was a pretty good conference. Just the absence of celebrities and embarrassing Kinect segments made it instantly better than anything MS has put on for years.

With all the pre-hype I thought it was kinda underwhelming conference as I legitimately thought MS had a megaton. That said, I liked the variety of games shown and especially Ori and the Blind Forest.

CG trailers had their place in the days of yesteryear before hardware was powerful enough to push truely breathtaking gameplay graphics. For example, the intro cinematic for Crusader No Remorse & Mechwarrior II did great jobs conveying the world you would be inhabiting, but everyone knew the visual fidelity of the actual game would be substantially less. Now we are at a point in time where the hardware is capable of rendering truely breathtaking in-engine, gameplay graphics. There is no longer a need for GC, or visual trickery to sell a title. The Killzone Shadow Fall reveal is a perfect example. We didn't all watch some pre-baked GC trailer of Vekta, we watch a dude on stage play a game... there is power in that kind of honest debut. I think a lot of people are let down by the amount of MS's 1st party CG trailers, because they are obviously nothing more than place holders for games that are a long way out. GAF wants excellent first party titles as soon as possible, not in "2015 & beyond".

Personally the most curious thing about the MS conference for me was the fact that they appeared to be circling the wagons. They seemed to make almost no attempt at trying to entice potential Xbone owners to 'Jump In' at the new price point but rather just maintain their current direction..., which hasn't been that great thus far for a variety of reasons.

For example the die hard HALO fans will lap up the Master Chief collection..., but weren't the HALO fans already onboard for the Xbone? It just felt as though they were preaching to the converted.

Especially with the whole '100 classic MP maps for you to play' and access to the HALO 5 MP beta. While I realize that the HALO 5 MP beta will be a short term thing it still feels like "here's all the multiplayer that you could ever want and/or need..., now here is some more multiplayer".

In saying that I thought that their conference was solid but it felt like it was the work of a company securely in the driving seat with a commanding market share rather than a company that has the huge task of playing catch up with a competitor with all the momentum.

Rare didn't show anything. :-(

I'm not sure that Rare are even showing signs of life never mind a new project.

Well, one thing this conference really showed is how weak MS first party is: they just announced sequels/remakes/rehashes of their well-known Xbox IPs (Halo, Halo, Forza, Fable) and not a single brand new IP: they're completely relying on 2nd parties for original content and fresh new ideas and on timed-exclusive content from 3rd parties (since better multiplatform version is no more).
Surely that's a way to please Xbox hardcore fans, but for everyone else this conference was a pretty big disappointment.

This years Xbox conference was very similar to last years in terms of pacing and games, games, games. They didn't show a single Kinect game last year.

The Halo Collection really piques my interest. I have my Target credit from the big trade in deal from a few weeks ago, so the kinect less XBox will set me back around $200.

Might wait for that to get closer before picking up the console. Though Dead Rising 3 is really, really tempting.

Their conference was a major improvement from last year. A lot of the games they showed were non-exclusive 3rd party titles, but it was a good selection of games w/ lots of variety. and even some nice surprises like the new Kamiya game, Scalebound, and the new game from the Limbo guys, Inside. The Sunset Overdrive gameplay trailer looked amazing. Overall a very strong showing from Microsoft

Kind of validates my criticism of Phil Spencer going into E3. I pointed out that he took the helm on MGS in 2008 and turned into into a Halo, Fable, Forza plant. People dismissed it as all Mattrick's doing. It's pretty clear from today that Spencer is content catering to the traditional Xbox demographic. Mattrick's legacy is Kinect.

I give 4/10 scores for MS E3.
Not 1/10 like last year, but pretty much 70% is multi-platform.
The exclusives are cinematic CGI.
Even an interesting game like Project Spark got that lame trailer.

MS is just fine because their last year E3 was too horrible.

Also, the Conker is like a slap in the face.

Sunset Overdrive GOTG so far for me. Imo looks the best title across all platforms so far being innovative and different with an unmatched amazing art style.

Plus 8 player coop!

Microsoft played this as safe as they could, but really thats how they see "core gamers"?

- COD trailer with a guy loosing his arm
- supercars
- AC French Edition Trailer ending with heads on spikes
- Over the top cartoon violence in Sunset Overdrive and Dead Rising DLC
- HALO 1-5 (Halo is the new "TV")

Also, I missed "THE POWER OF THE CLOUD"... dedicated servers on Xbox Live sounds more reasonable I guess.

I was disappointed by all the CGI and lack of actual gameplay footage. It really felt like MS didn't have much to show in terms of anything coming out soon, we didn't even get to see any Halo 5 gameplay. Disappointed to see that Phantom Dust is just an HD remake and not a sequel too.

Just finished watching the conference, well paced and a nice look at some great games Witcher 3, AC and The Division looked good. Nothing really wowing on the exclusive front though other than Halo.
