Sony E3 2014 Conference Thread

Sony, I know you aren't reading this thread this far back, but I'm going to pretend you are.

Look, you earned a LOT of goodwill after your showing at your PS4 announcement and at E3 last year, partially because you were focused on games and partially because of the negative reaction to Microsoft. Earning goodwill doesn't give you the right to use that goodwill to show us things that aren't games. We told you last year that we'll follow you if you focus on games, and it feels like you want to turn around and capitalize on that goodwill by showing us things we don't care about. I purchased a PS4, partially because I want to play Naughty Dog games, and partially because you presented the system as one that will be better for games (I don't give a shit about TV). Microsoft learned their lesson after last year, and their conference was about NOTHING but games, and while their games are still less interesting to me than yours, their conference was more compelling. They have come to understand that you don't watch an E3 press conference to hear about TV.

Please don't let the rest of your company try to dictate what you give us. As the last year has shown, we're fickle. I fell off the 360 bandwagon for two reasons: they started showing too many ads, and my PC has an SSD. Playing games on my PC is awfully convenient because download times are fast and load times are short (with my download speed, it really shouldn't have taken more than 1 minute to download 1001 Spikes, but it did - things like that are supremely frustrating). I expect you to have things like Netflix on the PS4, but at this point, it isn't a selling point. It's a requirement. And original programming is cool in theory, but like I said, I don't watch E3 to hear about it, because I don't care about TV. I want to be excited to play games.

I guess I'm trying to tell you not to let this goodwill go to your heads. People like you now, but that can very easily change. We don't purchase $400 consoles for TV shows. We can get that from a $60-ish Roku or $100 Apple TV (or even our existing computers). We purchase $400 consoles because we want to play awesome games. I don't doubt you'll deliver on those games, but I worry you'll let your lead go to your head and you'll say "hey, let's push our shitty original TV show on these adoring fans," which will annoy said adoring fans and will, over time, push them to the Xbox.

And then Microsoft, having the lead, will put really stupid things (like an internet browser) behind a paywall, will bombard their users with ads, and will burn their newfound goodwill and push people back to you. So maybe this whole post is pointless because you two will be locked in an eternal struggle, with each company capitalizing on the other's weakness.

I actually liked the Boyes "letters" segment, I thought it was fun and moved at a nice pace. I feel if they didn't have the non games stuff, they win the day, but wow that non games segment sucked all the energy out of the room.

B -

Sony did what it did to promote the brand. The indie releases look promising, shit the best game they show off was No Man's sky.

Pros:

+ Destiny looks refreshing, much needed title for the genre of FPS.
+ Batman looks amazing, in game footage looks smooth and will hopefully play as well.
+ No Man's Sky

Cons:

- Playstation TV, you would think a company would have learned after the bore fest of microsoft's 2013 conference.
- CGI trailers for games releasing 2015. Yeah it's nice to know they are in the works, but show us something that we can play now
- The Last Guardian is pretty much dead, seriously when the hell is this game going to release?

Yeah.

Sony:Tell us what games you want.
Audience : We want Shenmue 3, Crash Bandicoot, Yakuza and new Vita titles.
Sony: Did i heard zombie titles?

The Tim Schafer fakeout really wasn't worth it.

I lost respect for Adam because of that stunt.

He knew full well no one was clamoring for a fucking zombie game (Dead Island 2!?)
to the extent that folks have been asking about Shenmue, FFVII Remake, Crash,
Yakuza and a numerous Vita titles.

The think we're imbeciles.

this was a better conference than last year, but it was so much more difficult to watch. here's how i would have done it.

0:00-0:05: showcase oreshika. make an event of it. then spend the other time showing off a sizzle reel of vita games
0:06-0:14: reveal persona 5, talk about the longevity of the ps3, and show a sizzle reel of upcoming ps3 games
0:15-0:23: use this as a springboard to talk about playstation (vita) tv, and how all those games will be available through playstation now. also, talk a bit about playstation now.
0:24-0:34: reveal littlebigplanet 3 and bloodborne or something previously unseen in the transition to ps4 games. showcase one game with exclusive content (destiny)
0:35-0:40: sizzle reel of ps4 games due in 2014. this is where they should have shown stuff like year old games like the last of us and gta v. this is also where a lot of those third-party games could have gone.
0:41-0:47: also talk about indies in a broad sense. once more, focus on a game instead of a couple. then if there's time, do another sizzle reel of upcoming indie games.
0:48-0:50: thanks for coming, but in case you weren't aware, we're making uncharted 4.

first off, it cuts out the really boring parts, like the absolutely pointless powers segment, or the things that seem out of place like the ratchet & clank movie trailer (and talk of a semi-remake of the first game, but no footage). second, it gives a sense of weight to certain things, so that the audience is wowed by the big stuff. otherwise, there's a big sense of diminishing returns. am i supposed to be super excited for abzu? or no man's sky? or batman? or gta v again? or metal gear solid v? because these games received about the same level of attention. finally, it offers a sense of variety, and should give off a feeling that there's a lot more than what there was. i mean this conference was one hundred and ten goddamn minutes long holy shit. it could have been half as long and twice as good.

No. Us here on Gaf are the minority. We think we're the majority, but we're not. The majority is the people who clamor for call of duty, FIFA, Madden NFL, Battlefield and the assorted zombie games.

No Man's Sky and Grim Fandango remake were surprises for me. Everything else was just as expected. The best stuff they showed was all multiplat. They really could have used Guilty Gear Xrd in between all that numbers/TV/etc. monotony that plagued the middle to end of the conference.

Other then geeks on gaming forums, no one wants another shenmue release. Sega is doing us a favor by not developing another bore fest that will be massively over hyped to no end by the select .05 percent of gamers out there.

Yeah.

I heard the reason they won't make those is because they are afraid they will sell more copies than they can manufacture.

It's either that or nobody bought those games and they stopped releasing them.

Boyes is not going to open up a letter that says 'Shenmue 3' and tell the press "sorry, guys, I really tried to get it, but SEGA wouldn't let me unless a hundred million dollars."

I know who won and now I'll prove it:

Company I Like (A):
- Praise Games I want
- Praise features I won't get but are exclusive.
- Praise the indie support
- Great Multiplats

Company I Don't Like (B):
- Downplay Games I don't want
- Downplay features I wouldn't get but are exclusive.
- Too many indies
- Only multiplats. Where are the exclusives?

Therefore, henceforth, objectively, conclusively without a shadow of a doubt, Company A won hands down.

heh.

Exactly how it should be.

Nintendo is bound to be the anti-thesis for this and I absolutely can't wait to see how they present.

I'm just hoping it is more streamlined and packed with games like a ND or the Smash Direct and not like last year's Digital Event.

Massively disappointed in Sonys E3, all the decent games are coming in 2015. They shot their load at last years E3 with console reveal and so far all it's been is "look at all these awesome games we announced last year that you still cant play yet."

Can't believe I stayed up till ridiculous o'clock in the morning UK time to get a glimpse of Uncharted and it was barely even a teaser trailer.

He flat-out stated that his division scans the net, especially significant GAMING FORUMS
before launching into those letters.

He knew full-well as to what he was doing.

Extremely disappointed in his section. A stark contrast to his brilliant display last year.

Happy about the Far Cry 4 play without needing the game thing. Loved playing games on DS and 3DS with friends who dont have have the game, was wondering when more games would start doing it too. And Grim Fandango got me right in the nostalgia, think that and the White PS4 is enough to push me over.

Yeah.

Sony: Did i heard zombie titles?
Haha nicely said, that's exactly what I was thinking during the conference.

Since everyone's been giving ratings here are mine

MS 7/10 Solid games, but didn't appeal enough to me personally
EA 3/10 wow... that was baaaad. A few points for the awesome NHL trailer but it was awful
Ubisoft 8/10 AC:U, FC4, R6 all looked pretty great, hell even The Crew which I'd given up on after microtransactions and always online looked damn good. Broke my heart with no BGAE though.
Sony 7/10 Sony was really hit and miss for me personally, higher highs than MS but the pacing was so off at times. Also shattered still no TLG, especially after the twitter thing earlier in the week, I thought it would be in for sure...

Nintendo could steal the show for me tomorrow, butl they would have to run a tight presentation with no filler (it's pre recorded, use it to your advantage Ninty), show a New Zelda / Metroid, X, a new 3D Mario and a new IP.

So the breakdown is, when I get an Xbone, I'll buy 5 games for it from this year's E3. I'm interested in 5 more than that, but I'll be buying them on PS4. As for PS4, I plan on buying 20 games from E3, not even counting the 5 from before, so... yeah.

It's okay.

You can play a bunch of games released last year instead but REMASTERED!

good show as the ms one to me, but not great. blood, let it die, lbp and unchy vs scale, phantom, crackdown are similar, but too many 15 games, no tlg, no vita, make me plan to wait for next year before jumping on board

this was really bad imo.
After ms conference i was like yeah those are a couple games i can see me buying but its ms so no. After sonys conference i was glad i didnt buy a ps4....dont get me wrong a ps4 is in my future and certainly before a x1 but.....

I am a day1 vita owner and besides fandago.....well yeah go fuk yourselves

You mean when he spent 20+ minutes on Assassin's Creed and Watch_Dogs back-to-back?

Which were far better than his section this year.

I will agree with some of the other comments here about the length:
it was way too long.

Had they cut out Layden's abysmal debut and Adam's section, then
you'd be left with an amazing conference.

As of now, it was simply solid. Hence the B+.

What were you expecting?

2 VERY BIG ISSUES WITH THIS CONFERENCE:

1) That Layden chap brought he entire conference to screeching halt. Like what the
FUCK? Then that Power TV series and Vita TV segment, why could that not have been
announced outside the actual conference? Was it filler because their other studios
aren't ready to show their games?

2) Adam Boyes's section was rage inducing because I'm convinced that those
letters weren't indicative of the type of games people have been begging for.
It was completely disingenuous.

Everything else was great.

Solid B+

Agree on both points. As to the letters, it made me think of the requested Vita games like FF0 and Valkyria 3. I was not expecting something like that but when I saw Dead Island 2 I was just thinking "were people clamoring for this?" No knock on Dead Island it just seemed disingenuous to me as well.

Andy House was far too smug than he had any right to be, Sony still taking cheap shots at Microsoft and continue to show absolutely nothing.

Sony is slipping back into old arrogant habits and this is coming from someone who hated Xbox One reveal and bought PS4 pretty much day one.

They showed plenty, you might not like what was shown but they did show alot.

IMO MS had the better conference. Sony's conference was pretty weak in the exclusives and relied on multiplatormers like Batman, Destiny to deliver the show, whereas Microsoft's didn't and relied on their own content. MS seemed to have more exclusives like Crackdown 3, Forza Horizon 2, Fable Legends, Cuphead, famed Kamika's new game, Killer Instinct season 2, Halo 5 beta, Inside, Ori, Scalebound, Happy Wars, Project Spark and not to mention QB and Gears of War were not even there. It was also really boring when Sony started talking about Playstation TV and spent far much time on Powers and discussing Destiny content, like wow big deal when MS kept going from project after project. I don't really care for LBP and remasters. I guess it's all subjective though.

I wanted to punch that guy talking about TV. Jesus Christ. And when they were talking about fan letters, they gives a stupid zombie game no one asked for. Where is fuckin TLG!!

Batman looked fuckin good!!!!!! And all those indie games where fantastic! It was nice seeing some variety of games coming from Sony.

But overall only marginally better than the MS conference, a bit of a missed opportunity to really do a proverbial curb stomp on X1.

That conference was crazy awesome, except for no mans sky. I'm convinced that's going to be like fable.

I think Spore is almost a better comparison. They are being so unclear with what the limits of the procedural generation are it will almost certainly disappointing when we see where the boundaries lie.

I still think it looks great though.

To have a better presentation than the others Nintendo just need to do something that isn't bad.
What the hell happened this year?
