PS Vita TV coming to West as Playstation TV, $99

So for someone like me who doesn't have any Sony consoles/handhelds (except an old PSP)... would I be able to buy this and a controller and use PlayStation Now to play PS3 games? Essentially what I'm asking is... is this a $99 PS3?

I do plan to buy a PS4 eventually, but not for another year or two. But for $99, I'd love to play some PS3 games.

The vita has always been region free, the only problem is the memory cards are not so you need a card for each psn account. It really should be setup like PS3 is.

Unfortunately the Vita TV currently out in Japan/Asia only works with Asian PSN accounts. So yes, the Vita TV is region-locked (I think retail gamecards of different regions are hit-or-miss).

I wonder if they'll remove the region lock for the Western launch.

That compatibility list for US will be super important to me. I think ultimately, I'm going to end up getting this anyway, but I'd rather know what games I'd get to play on the TV. And I'm curious as to the degree that we'll get screwed/limited.

PS Now is eventually coming to it. But we don't have details on how much of the PS3 library will be available. To be honest, I don't think the controller bundle is a very good alternative to the $200 PS3.

Hmmm... I don't know what to think.

PS4 is more than capable emulating the PSV, and at the least PSP.

Does it have 1080p netflix output? If it does I'll end up getting one. If not I'll just wait for the PS1/PS2 backwards compatibility for PS4.

Well the other part to it is I plan on getting a PS4 so having a second TV to use for that would be nice. Plus, if there's ever any Vita titles I'm interested in, I may not need to buy a Vita and could just use this. And it takes up less space in my already crowded room. But... I am open to other alternatives. If there's a relatively cheap way to play PS3 games, then I'm all for it. Whether that's a PlayStation TV or a PS3 or whatever.

That's basically how I see Vita, or rather the Vita's internals surviving in Western markets - as a PlayStation TV microconsole and inexpensive PS4 accessory/second room extender; with the actual Vita also simply becoming a [more expensive] accessory.
I've never personally really viewed the Vita TV as an extension of the Vita brand, but rather an admission that the base product is a failure, and instead re-purposing the core technology of that base product into an accessory device for the flagship product. I don't anticipate it will be released in Western markets as "Vita TV" but rather as PlayStation TV, and it will primarily sell to people who buy a PS4.
Called it. :P

Excited for this! I will deff be picking this up some time, get to play those Vita games I want (as long as they are compatible).

While it is a bit messed up the Vita TV isn't called a Vita anymore :(, it does make since the way Sony is marketing the device here.

It can natively play PS1, PSP, and select PS Vita games + PS3 and PS2 games via PlayStation Now + have Remote Play function with PS4 = almost.....six different Sony platforms under one box, not a half bad deal for 100 bucks :D.

A great thing that will come from this is the fact MUCH more PSP and PS1 games will natively work on Vita in the future; while this does run on the Vita OS, it ISN'T called a Vita, so it will be licensed under the 'PlayStation' name (much like the PS1/2/3/4), meaning that games that naturally work on PS3 and PSP will work here, making the licensing crap the Vita has issues with moot.

Still though, this may be the makeshift way Sony fully has BC with PSP and PS1 software for Vita, as it would be worth the licensing costs to have he games work if the PlayStation TV will be licensed like the Vita (it still is called the Vita TV in Japan).

Either way, this will ensure more Vita/PS1/PSP sales on PSN and more Retail Sales on Vita Retail games and MC's; the Vita name/brand will bring in more profit that way to Sony plus the device can be used as a streaming box and as an 'extra' PS4 for the family (as you can hook a PlayStation TV too another TV and Remote Play the central PS4 to your room).

At long last, sony, at long friggin last.

Now, about that windows-only SDK..

why not just release the vita titles on PS4 instead?
anyone getting vita tv not owning/going to get a PS4???
Me, quite likely.

nooooooo

They need to patch those Vita games so they can work with the DS4 at least... :(

Why? Nobody bought them on the Vita. How many people do you think will buy a PS tv to play Vita games on their tv? We are getting down to the thousands of people. That makes it hard to justify the costs required to patch a bunch of Vita games to make them work...

Sony for the love of everything port Tearaway to this and I will give you my money.

Patches aren't magic. They won't be able to change the fundamental core mechanics of the game. Again. Just buy a Vita. You can find them dirt cheap these days...

Why aren't they bundling it with DS4 instead of DS3? Makes no sense.

I'm guessing a DS3 is more straightforward for PSNow, since it has Select/Start buttons.

The assumption is that if you are getting it to stream PS4 onto another TV, then you already have a DS4. But maybe you want to play PS3 games on PS Now and you don't have a PS3 (maybe sold it, never got one, etc) or some PS Vita games, then you need a DS3 (which is much cheaper than a DS4, better battery life, etc).

I'd rather buy this, since buying a handheld is pointless for me. I don't leave the house, so why should I play games on a small screen when I can play them on the big screen?

Plus the PS TV is cheaper.

I'm in the same boat. not buying a PS4 until it racks up some titles I am interested in (MGSV,Bloodborne etc...) is a no buy. Plus, I only want to play Vita games and classics on it. I really can't justify paying $200 for a vita just soI can play Person 4 Golden (mostly). $99 is the perfect price

Need a launch date in the next few weeks. That or confirmation that the Japanese version will get an update to allow us region accounts to be used. Either one will work for me.

I really wish this thing had a UMD drive. I know it's super outdated but I have a ton of PSP games I haven't even touched that I would rather play on my tv, and I don't want to repurchase them on PSN.

Sites are reporting a fall release.

Now I just need confirmation an update will allow us accounts on a Japanese console so I can purchase it right now.

Mr Totilo was not impressed.

"I think the PlayStation TV is a confusing product," he said.

"Sony TVs are now playing PlayStation games, the PlayStation TV is playing backwards-compatible games - I think if I was the consumer I'd be in a muddle about which of Sony's many different devices is the one that I need."
Hmm I think it's wrong thing to say because not everyone must have Sony TV or even new TV yet. You can go use it on any brand TV.

I'm surprised they are still bringing it over after its disastrous Japanese release. I don't think it has much of an audience in the West either.

Not that I'm saying it'll perform well or anything, but it has way more point in the US (the land of second TVs and car-based commutes) than in Japan.

DanganRonpa should be fine right? I'd buy one just for that game.

It definitely will not.

The bundle is a great option for a holiday gift. Especially for younger people when you don't want to buy them own PS4, get them this instead, save a lot of money and it's compatible with the PS4 you may get one day.

Will maybe buy 2

One for office to stream ps4 content, one for living room for vita on tv if I want

Hopefully the console limit doesn't screw me over
