It's not pathetic when journalism as a field is so competitive, and there are so many very knowledgeable people out there, yet people who make such basic errors which give-away they know nothing about the series slip through. Disappointing.

That isn't the issue. The guy was a complete dick about it.

Your very best bet would be to get the MGS Legacy Collection.

Has every single MG, excluding the 2 AC!D games (which are non-canon spinoff card games) and Portable Ops (which is a sort-of canon side story which Kojima constantly shits on and tries to ignore). Oh and Ghost Babel, the GameBoy Color MG (Also non-canon).

Basically it has every Metal Gear directed by Kojima.

Would have to buy a PS3 for that, unfortunately. Do you know if this collection is playable without the first game?

Watch the cutscenes of MGS1, then buy that.

Haha.

HOLY SHIT I FIGURED IT OUT!

At the end of the Red Band trailer for MGSV when we see Big Boss shooting 3 or 4 soldiers in the head. Those soldiers are his own! Something must happen where Snake flips and loses it and kills one of his soldiers, the body thats already on the ground at the end of the scene that we see when the camera moves to the right. The other soldiers all gather around and hold him back and when the alarm goes off he shoots them all in the head. You can tell something is not right with him at that moment and the real big red flag is the fact that he shoots them point blank. When has Snake ever shot someone he didn't have too, especially kill them like that.

This is obviously the point when Big Boss finally becomes the villain.

Yep, just noticed that - edited my post just as you guys replied.

The HD collection would be fine. From my previous post:
Edit:

Don't know how I misread that. Just noticed you said XB360 only. Well then the HD Collection is your best bet. MG, MG2, MGS2, MGS3 and Peace Walker. It's a good chunk of the games.

MGS3 and Peace Walker are the ones about Big Boss - so they're definitely recommended. MGSV builds up the events in MG and MG2, but they're not really required.

The canon timeline is:

MGS3
Portable Ops
Peace Walker
MGSV: GZ
MGSV: TPP
MG
MG2
MGS
MGS2
MGS4

So ideally you'll want to play anything set before TPP to understand the plot. There are things that lead to happenings in the other games, but they're not directly needed to understand or enjoy TPP. Although you should play them all eventually, it's a great series.

Still doesn't explain the zombie like last dude he puts a bullet in. Kojima isn't so lazy as to not make that guy have a reason for doing nothing while under attack. My guess is they are under some sort of mind control and BB knows they are fucked. Even the guys holding him seem mindless in their effort. He figures he just has to put them out of their misery and it probably fucks him up even more so. Putting down a dog situation. A...diamond dog.

Poetical

This was definitely weak in terms of what I expect from an MGS trailer. Its cut weird or something.
I love the music and I liked what I saw from the scenes but I just wish it was done differently. Oh well. Its not like Im not already hyped for the game :P

I was secretly hoping to hear more of Donna Burke. I love Sins of the Father so much.

LOL at that last line, nice. But maybe your right and these are his own soldiers being used against him and having to kill some or most his allies plus everyone dying at the end of ground zeroes puts him over the edge.

That was such an awesome trailer. I am definitely looking forward to Phantom Pain. Also, is it just me, or does MGS know exactly what to do with it's music to make it have the most awesome effects. I mean, there was Here's to You from Ground Zeroes, Sins of the Father from the Red Band trailer, and now Nuclear, and of course, the entire soundtrack of MGR (I know it's Platinum, but seriously, both series have some of the greatest uses of music in Video Game History).

Also, is BB working with Skull Face. That seems interesting, and I'm looking forward to seeing more of the villain.

And now I'm depressed because I mentioned Skull Face and Ground Zeroes. Man, that game was depressing.

Kojima just confirmed on his JP twitter that the "V has come to" from the GDC trailer is indeed Venom Snake. There was little doubt, anyway.

With the press you just have to realize nobody knows what they're talking about when it comes to metal gear.

I know the Greg Miller thing came up when he didn't know who Eli was but know one else is any better. Brad Shoemaker and Patrick Klepek thought that Mother Base was the Big Shell. Brad also thought that Punished Snake was a different clone possibly. Jeff Gerstmann thinks that Solid Snake was Big Boss' former code name. He also thinks for some reason that Big Boss games are "less crazy" than anything with Solid Snake.

So my point is just don't pay attention to most things the press have to say when it comes to Metal Gear's story. It's a huge, convulated story that most people don't have time to understand. ( Yeah all my examples were Giant Bomb related I know.)

Well, that makes sense, but I was hoping the V also stood for virtual. So that it would go in line with the theory that MGS V is all a simulation being played out by someone who is being brainwashed to believe they are the one and only BB (AKA Snake and Bake).

OK, so I really want to get into the MGS universe but I haven't played any of the games to completion. I currently only own a 360 and an XB1. Will not own a PS4 until some time next year. What do I do? I've seen these "movies" on YouTube, is that a good way of getting into the story, are there HD remakes out there that I can play on platforms I own? Would greatly appreciate any help.

I've played some of the Metal Gear Games that fit the mainline story (except for MGS 4, Peace Walker, and Portable Ops).

I found this series reminded me of some of the details from the games I played and obviously spoilt the others.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=778Sr8ePnWc (this is just the first video, there are a number of different parts.

There are lots of similar videos, I found this the best for me. It doesn't claim to be the definitive everything you must know (there will always be nods to big fans of the series), however it covers the main plot points that link the games together.

My opinion? If you can access the games, do so. If you are you are unable to, then it is worth filling in some of the gaps with a series of Youtube videos like this.

I think the most confusing thing in that trailer is Skull Face wearing the eye patch. And i'm guessing that facility is
Outer Heaven?
I mean the old base was blown sky high and its only safe to assume that's
Outer Heaven
.

Step 1:) Read the wikipedia pages for Metal Gear and then Metal Gear 2. Should take you like 10 minutes.

Step 2:) Watch the original 1998 MGS cutscenes on youtube. Like around 4 hours or so, maybe more. If you have already done this then awesome.

Step 3:) Buy the HD Collection for 360. Play Sons of Liberty. Then play Snake Eater. Then play Peace Walker. In that order.

Optional Step:) Watch the MGS4 cutscenes on youtube. This will give added context to the story.

Step 4:) Buy Ground Zeroes for Xbox One. Play it.

Step 5:) You are now ready for Phantom Pain.

Not an eyepatch. Look closer!

It's a mask, yo! (And yes, the base that becomes Outer Heaven, it seems.)

Don't play Peace Walker; it's incredibly mediocre. Just watch the cutscenes on Youtube.

You'll already be playing through several Metal Gear games, so you don't want to burn yourself out anyway.

It DOES spoil GZ, a lot actually.

His question was about the trailers of this years E3, which is just that one we got. It had 0 GZ footage. I guess you could take from it what you will about the aftermath, but that's something we already knew would happen from the GDC trailer.
