MGSV: THE PHANTOM PAIN - E3 2014 Trailer (jp) [up: English]

This is the first time I've heard MGS4 mentioned in a while in a metal gear thread and I've just realized that, damn, it's sure been a breath of fresh air not to have every last living soul go on about how it ruined the series or whatever..

That's just a very small vocal minority here on GAF. Metal Gear fans in general acknowledge MGS4 as one of the best games in the series.

Hmm. This was a little too much, even for me.

Oh sure, I know. It's just that every single thread for the past few years has had to have multiple people come in and remind us that, "Hey, did you guys know I really, really hate MGS4? You do? Well let me explain it again in minute detail once more why I hate it anyway!"

I'm glad MGSV seems to be making those people forget it and rekindle some passion for the series.

Our sales didn't like Snake covering his face since Snake & his team have been exposed in pub already, (cont)

Scarfs are the primordial sign of evilness, confirmed.

MGSIV made some huge missteps. Let me explain it in minute detail...

Heh.

Nah, huge missteps narratively for me (mostly towards the end), but I still played the fuck out of it. MGO2 was incredible (I formed a no-kills clan, 8,000 stuns and no-kills!), the gameplay for the first two chapters was spot on, I did a series of War Photography galleries on my PS3 using Octocamo and the camera... and, man, I absolutely loved Old Snake! My disappointment with the narrative of IV didn't affect my love for the series at all.

One of my favourite things was the in game podcast. What a fun way to do a dev commentary

Why? Considering Liquid's obsession with his father and brothers, it made a lot of sense to me.

First, he wasn't really Liquid. Even if he was, his obsession with his family was out of hate, not reverence, so that doesn't fit well character wise.

Secondly, it added nothing to the story or push the narrative along, nor help elaborate or expand upon any of the game's themes. It was, if anything, a poorly timed joke that fucked up the tense pacing of the moment. I say this as someone who thought Ocelot shooting people with his fingers was genuinely hilarious and all kinds of awesome. This was too much.

A lot of sense? like, maybe if he had a photo of them on the side or something but a full on Rushmore carved into a submarine would require a ridiculous level of obsession

oh and i guess lets not forget that its not liquid but
a hypnotized ocelot thinking he was still possessed by liquids gross ghost arm

I always personally thought Liquid Ocelot was kinda nuts, and having a fake Mt. Rushmore was the piece de resistance on haven in his mind. Didn't the game allude to him being insanely rich too since he was the shadow head of 5 pmcs? Maybe he just wanted to show off.

Carved? You were obviously not paying attention. That was Octocamo. It was an optical illusion. The monument disappears when the ship's camouflage is lowered. Get your facts straight.

He thought he was Liquid down to the level of feeling obsession towards Big Boss and his brothers. I saw it like a joke coming from Liquid, mocking the fact that the efforts of all the Snakes would bring down the System.

It was fine.

And this is why the vocal minority is right. MGS4 is bad. Bad, bad, bad.

Hahahaha! Yeah, right...

Wait what? My impression were that even the MGS fanbase didn't like MGS4 that much.

I'm a huge MGS fan and have been since 1998 but MGS4 ruined it for me.

Phantom Pain have made me excited again though.

Nope, it's quite the opposite really. I've been in several gaming forums throughout the years, and the hate seems to come from 5-7 individuals here at GAF. Of course, there must be thousands of people who didn't like the game, but only a few constantly bitch about it.

Like back in old days of MGS, u can expect somewhat comical elements in TPP gameplay at E3 like cardboard box or fulton animals. Scary huh?

MGS4 has its problems, but overall it was a great game. Some things were just ridiculous, though. I'll never forget how I got super teary eyed at the end of MGS4, same as I did 3. Like I had lost someone close to me...

Oh yeah, it had SEVERAL issues (Act 5 being so short is one of my main issues). But the overall package is recognized as one of the best games of the generation.

It was a joke, that much we can agree on. It fell very flat for me.

It wasn't fine, it undermined the tension of the scene and added nothing to anything (would the game be any better, worse or less understandable without it? Nope). Normally Kojima is excellent at balancing the ridiculous and serious, but here (in a rare instance) I feel he misjudged it.

Hey, no problem. I liked it, you didn't. At least no one is being an ass about it like it happens in most threads. XD

I agree. It's fantastic. It was my girlfriends favorite of the series (she got all sappy during the wedding...). I just didn't like some of the retcons and oddities (like, why did Snake even need to go in the microwave hallway if the MK.III did all the work?).

Please be a public showing. PLEASE.

As long as there's no soldier pooping his pants I'm fine (or at least when it's not featured in a cutscene.)

Dammit Kojima.

If you're going to do it, keep it as easter eggs as opposed to something plastered in you're face ala MGS4. That shit was the worst!

I always thought that was because they knew the server room would be heavily guarded (And it was). The Mark III could install the virus itself, but the scarabs would probably blew it up before it had the chance. Snake was there to protect the Mark III, not to install the virus himself.

But anyways... XD

A prior tweet says he'll be showing it all 3 days of E3. It's confusing whether it's public or private. His tweets lean heavily towards public, but all the Konami PR people say private.

why would he show it privately all day long for 3 days? Doesn't make sense to me.

OMGZ yessss

I jumped the gun and got too excited. This is what a portion reads:

A series of invitation-only Konami presentations at E3 will also include the showcasing of some The Phantom Pain gameplay; specifically, a walkthrough of one of the game’s primary locations will be presented, lasting about 30 minutes in total. The lucky attendees of this session will experience a very first in-depth look at the title’s gameplay, and discover the scope of the dynamic, open-world environments that promise to be a highlight of this latest entry in the Metal Gear series.

You're right, it doesn't. Show the public the goddamn gameplay! We don't want to read about it from greasy press guys who probably don't even care much for the series anyway.

It's not that they're showing it privately. It's that they've announced publicly multiple times (and apparently, released a damn presser) that this upcoming footage will be demonstrated live for those invited to the event. Why not just, not say anything and then after everyone has played it, lift an embargo and have journalists say "Hey, we got our hands on MGSV at E3!"?

According to Eyestone on the recent EN KojiSta, it may or may not be shown publicly.

because he had to protect the mk III when it was shutting down the system against those black legged machines
