Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

The PVP videos on YouTube look awesome. Looks like Halo gameplay with some twists with abilities and weapons. There was even a ghost similar vehicle. I'm way more hyped after seeing some footage.

Does anyone know if split screen is supported? My wife only plays Halo (and loves it) and she only plays split screen with me, never solo.

Just got done playing for an hour or two, here are some thoughts!

Old Russia is really beautiful during sunset lighting conditions. The world is much larger than I initially anticipated and that's a good thing. Cruising around on the Sparrow is a lot of fun thanks in part to the Star Wars sound effects and I like that you can summon one at any time.

Weapon models look a little low resolution on the texture side, particularly the shotgun that came with the Hunter class I picked. Gunplay feels solid, much better than it appeared it would be considering the videos. I think it's due in part to the substantial level of vibration you get from the controller feedback. Headshots are also satisfying with a wispy smoke effect.

Patrol missions are typical fodder, but I enjoyed the combat and exploring enough to continue doing them for an hour or two straight. Seeing the Fallen and Hive fight against each other was a nice surprise and it felt pretty dynamic in a three way fight.

I'm still not particularly fond of the voice acting by Dinklage found in the story mission, just sounds a little monotone and disinterested. Another small complaint is that the load times seemed fairly lengthy when going back and forth from the Tower to Old Russia.

Random feedback thoughts that I think may help improve the game:

1. I'm still not entirely sure if there is something like this in the game, but it seemed like whenever I ran into someone it was pretty fleeting and didn't have a substantial impact. It would be more interesting if you could go up to the person, press a button and they instantly join your fire team and go on to complete quests with them.

2. It would be better if the map was accessible at all times when you are at the Tower rather than seeing it only when you talk to a certain person.

3. When hovering over equipment items it would be great if it automatically loaded and previewed it on your character rather than having to dig into the menu check out how it looks.

I will continue to play and give more feedback, but so far I very much enjoyed what I got to play.

What's that alphanumeric code on the higher right corner?

You really think so? Movement maybe, but I havent experienced anywhere near that depth and strategy

i think when we start seeing the support classes coming out, like the titan bubble thing and the warlocks healing ability, it'll show itself more, but movement and weapons really feel like shadowrun to me.

I'm still 50/50 on the game. Hopefully I'll get in the Beta this weekend and have a decision before release date.
I'm 50/50 on the competitive MP so far but I'm 100% sold on the game for what it is already. This game will be judged with the most ridiculous expectations.. But shouldnt be skipped. It feels unique despite the millions of comparisons and polished despite its Alpha status

I think everything is too lethal for me to agree. And the respawn system and round based nature of Shadowrun really differentiate

i'm not getting that same level of lethality when i play, i'm often able to sprint to cover or get away, the more i play the less i get instant death feeling like i did when i started.

How did the Ninja guy on twitch get into the Alpha early though?

friends and family, it came out on wednesday so that we could populate the world and give the game a bit more life during early impressions and when media teams were coming through like giant bomb.

They need to do something with the MP announcer. The current guy isn't doing it for me.

He sounds very bored most, if not all of the time. It certainly doesn't bring up the excitement in a match. Kinda thinking now about what I'd actually like to hear for MP, that'd fit in-universe.

Welp, I just got back from buying a PS4, time to play Metal Gear, watch Alpha streams, and wait till Thursday (and hope I get in).

Hey guys, is it possible to do no-scopes across the map with the sniper rifle like in Halo?

Everything points to that not being possible (bloomed reticle and all) but I want to be sure.

After watching a few videos of the competitive multiplayer this is basically Halo in everything but name +ADS. I cannot wait to get a taste this weekend. Sorry if this has been answered in the thread already but what systems do they have in place for balancing? AFAIK you are able to use your single player progress (character level, weapons, abilities) into multiplayer correct? Are you match-made based on character level? Any details on this?

I've been looking at Destiny since the early videos came out, and I pre-ordered in March.

Until that giant bomb alpha playthrough, I had fairly low expectations. Now I'm really eager to get my hands on it, it looks really fun.

halo reach had different announcers for firefight, maybe we'll get the opportunity to hear different announcers in destiny.

Oh, and just as I suspected, a good player does indeed make the game seem much more fun.

Ninja's stream is great. I used to watch him back in the Halo Reach days. Good times.

The Giant Bomb 1 hour playthrough video really got me excited about this game again. Like many, I was having trouble figuring out what it was exactly. And it's a lot of things. I would really encourage people to check out that Giantbomb unfinished, to get a better understanding of the game. Nobody harvests resource nodes during a fire fight like Jeff.

Was watching some multiplayer(Domination type mode) on Live from Playstation and it doesn't look like super fast kills like people were hyping it up to be. Maybe it was the gun being used, but didn't look terrible. At least not CoD-like where you run around the corner and immediately are flattened.

Same impression i got from watching people play on twitch, looks like a good balance IMO.

I have watched some streams with gameplay. From what I have seen many things looks like Halo gameplay, how the vehicles behave, the characters are moving and jumping. But just in another universe and different art style.

I am thinking about if this is a good or bad thing for the game to be successful.

Everything looks/sounds fantastic I appreciate all the impressions in here. My only complaint, which really is no big deal is I'm not a fan at all of the MP announcer. They should have brought Jeff Steitzer back!

It's similar but it plays and feels slightly different. Which makes sense. Same thing happened with Marathon -> Halo as I understand it.

The ninja stream is playing multiplayer.

The quick kill isn't as bad as it is in Call of Duty, but you still die pretty quickly.

Yeah, kill times seem somewhere between Halo and Call of Duty. Looks intense and fun, but last couple of ninja's matches were laggy. Supers seem OP as hell, but it looks like it takes a while for them to recharge.

Have any of you tried the Hunter? I don't do shooters too often but when I do I always gravitate towards handguns and sniper rifles which the Hunter seems well suited for.

Is that belief accurate?
