Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 8: Put mii in, coach

I'm hopeful Smash 4 will have more of a shot than Brawl did. Brawl kinda blindsided a lot of people with just how different it was. Now people understand this new direction for the series and I'm hopeful they will really give the finished product a real shot.

Exactly, so long as there aren't blatant negative press about the game we will definitely see it grow and form it's own niche within the broader community.

People are definitely giving a chance and people need to stay open minded about these changes.

Compare the transition from Street Fighter 2 to Third Strike to Street Fighter IV.

The Street Fighter community faced nearly the same fallout until Street Fighter IV came back and brought back key members who actively gave it a chance.

Don't discourage people from wanting to play and enjoy SSB4 and don't ignore the things it does right while singling out it's shortcomings.

I really do hope that people give this game the chance it deserves because this game deserves a supporting community.

Man, lots of people freaking over an unfinished game. Sakurai said like 3 times they're still balancing and fine tuning the game. From what I've heard today, they're focusing on debugging the 3DS version first. I don't put much stock into what first impressions they have yet, although it's clear some characters are a bit too strong. I still liked what I saw overall.

Yup.

This whole discussion has actually turned my opinion around. I'm feeling really positive at the end of all this. hahaha.

I can't wait to meet more of the Smash and FGC community at EVO this year. 2014 is truly the year of Smash :)

I hope Lucas wins the deathmatch of who gets to remain in Smash.

Unfortunately I know the team will be biased towards the game that actually got an international release.

Is it weird that I want to Main MiiFighter? Is he in the 3ds Version? I know we had last e3 saying all characters would be on both platforms, but I just kinda wana make sure I didn't imagine that.

I don't know you, so I can't judge your Mii. ;) And, yes, they're in the 3DS version.

Captain Toad and the main Inkling girl are perfect DLC characters based on the new games announced today. I barely put any thought into these moves, but it shows that they're readily adaptable to Smash Bros.

Honestly, when it comes to DLC character, I'm interested in how this whole amiibo thing plays into it. Like, with Captain Toad - they've already confirmed there'll be amiibo interaction there. So sell a Captain Toad figure that does whatever with Captain Toad, and also unlocks him as a character in Smash. Great way to bundle content, reward the hardcore Nintendo fans, AND spread brand awareness.

I'll be interested to see what you think of Palutena after some time has passed and you revisit her trailer. I just did so tonight, and while I was cool with her reveal -- she was my No. 1 most wanted character, after all -- it only just now really clicked with me. She looks GREAT. And I like how all of her moves are based on the powers you could use in Kid Icarus Uprising. I never considered they might reference those, but it makes perfect sense -- they're powers provided by the gods, after all. :-)

i think my issue with pal despite being the greatest reveal ever is that she seemed the least polished out of everyone she seemed to lack a lot of the polish that i saw in the other models and gave me the impression that she is yet to be completed and still in the early-mid stages of development im hoping they add a lot more expressions to her model and sakurai gives pal the same attention to detail as the others

Didn't Sakurai say Miis were banned from online play? That's a real shame if so.

Well, since few people in smash irc said that there are few/some moves that are shown in Palutena's trailers are more likely coming from Customization moveset opinions. So I'm curious if people would figure out which moves would be more likely to be a part of Palutena's default moveset.

That would conceivably allow them to use the figurines as keys to unlock the DLC characters on your friends consoles (for that gameplay session) if they wanted to. I don't think they would but from a marketing and logistics perspective that would be really nifty.

Miis are only available with friends to "avoid bullying."
Literally Hitler

I got the same impression looking at the pictures. Something is just off about the model that I don't feel like putting into words right this second. More development time needed probably.

Dude, I'm just so pumped that everyone I wanted is in this game. That's totally a dream for me. Coming into this, I wanted Little Mac, Palutena, Rosalina as newcomers, and Ike and ZSS to return as veterans. We got even more than that, so I'm on cloud nine. Anything past this point is just a bonus.

Here's something strange I noticed...

Here's a shot of the 3DS character select screen (couldn't really see one with a good angle):

And here's the Wii U version:

Notice that the characters don't appear in the same order. Samus comes after the Zelda characters in 3DS, but not in Wii U, most of the characters toward the end of the roster are switched around, and Greninja comes before Pikachu in Wii U for some reason.

Wonder why that is.

2 Questions
- Anybody think it's weird they went with amiibo rather than amiigo?

- Is the current pic the PotD or is there still one yet to be updated tonight?

Maybe it's because Yoshi is only in the 3DS demo for some reason.

EDIT: Also Toon Link.

I really dislike that orange background in each character's box.

Weird, but I can see his point. It wouldn't exactly be good have hitler, satan, etc. be online fighters.
Honestly, I'm happy with the decision. I don't mind someone using a Mii that actually looks like a person, but it would get annoying to fight people online who found a way to make their Mii's face look like a penis.

Lol, there is a tier list on Melee it on me?

Ya that was super silly, but still interesting to see those players day -100 feelings on the characters.

haha ya that too.

So, I know I'm super late and it's probably been discussed to death already, but why the hell wasn't the pac-man trailer revealed in front of the 3000 raving Smash fans live after the invitational instead of quietly to a small room of press? That was an awesome trailer, but a horrible reveal.

Probably already posted, but I'm starting to see some answers coming through, so I might as well link to it. AMA with invitational players.

Didn't hear about this, cool! Also, just saw this posted in the Reddit thread:

Can't speak for the invitational players, but at every booth/TV display setup the Nintendo reps were asking what improvements we thought could be made. At first I thought it wouldn't really go anywhere/they wouldn't listen to specific suggestions, but in the VIP area a competitive player (blanking on his name) suggested less landing lag after ariels, and bigger dash dancing, and they took the time to write it down and make sure they got the terminology correct! They seemed genuinely interested!

Very cool, hopefully notes are actually being considered.

Just tuned in again at this thread :)

And saw a lot of backlash from previous posts... :(

I think we should not make the final judgment based from the demo alone. With Nintendo listening to suggestions of Smash players, who knows how will the final build will unfold. I'll just wait for my actual copy to see how it turns out. PS: I love all Smash games equally, and not that a competitive player :p

Seems like this is the chance for people to voice their concerns.

Hopefully the people fortunate enough to be there take advantage of it.

Although, since many will probably have a few hours or so of the game under their belt by this time tomorrow, I wonder if they're going to set up some formal system to allow the community to voice their concerns and offer suggestions.

I don't have a source for this Reddit comment, but:

I think part of the reason for this is that move staling works like it did in Brawl rather than in Melee. I saw PP's Fox Usmash the same character at high percents several times in a row and each time they went the same distance. I saw the same thing with Kirby's uthrow, it wouldn't kill (if at all ) until really high percent after using it many times in a stock, except this one time where Hbox used it right after he respawned and killed ZSS at like ~100-110%.

Unless they change this, people will need to save their KO moves for later rather than use them for damage racking and thereby lowering the knockback.

Has anyone noticed the moves getting weaker like this, Brawl style? I don't remember anything being announced either way yet.
