Final Fantasy Type-0 HD coming to PS4/Xbox One (no Vita), Agito coming too (iOS/And)

Like I said earlier, Sony tried to get them to do a Vita version but SE refused. Instead of going the logical way of at least doing a PS3 release they're now going to publish a 4 year old PSP port on new generation consoles without much in the way of visual upgrades.

Not sure why you are so sure of this?

Disappointment: 2009-present.

Yeah, albeit a subtle difference, here's the Digital Foundry article on it.

I'd imagine if SE REALLY wants to and doesn't significantly overhaul the grpahics otherwise they could probably do similar here on both systems, doubly so if they lock to 30 fps for some reason.

I also suspect one of their problems is ignoring "the more changes the more that stays the same." Atlus is still in business and had more issues with some of the higher ups than actual sales performance, XSEED, NISA, and Aksys all seem to be doing alright... SE's traditional fanbase IS there, I guess the question is how best to sell to them. And admittedly PSP probably wasn't good enough then, but just because it wasn't doesn't mean Vita is no good either, and it doesn't mean you can't go for BOTH Vita and consoles.

I've suspected their problem is that they want to be an AAA publisher but are best at developing niche games, and so kind of have an identity crisis. Probably also why they got Eidos only for Eidos output to rapidly downscale since.

thanks for the link, didn't know that they sample down to have extra AA on PS4

I can't believe there's no Vita version, fuck you SE, I won't give you anymore of my $ until you stop being so damn shit.

Sounds like they're trying to prep up the current gen base.

Foregoing the PS3 and Vita just like that? Reading the Tabata interview they had already contemplated the PS3 idea. Leaving it off like that now makes it feel intentional to me.

If SE releases a cheap PSP port on the PS4/Xbone in 2015 as one of their only titles on that platform, wouldn't that just stick out as a sore thumb on current gen platforms as developers are already ramping up in graphics and pumping out great looking games.

From what Kagari said, I don't think they are going to put much resources into actually remaking the game to fit a console release.

I guess I know when I'm buying a PS4. Bring it quickly square. I need my PS4 buying reason. And I don't see what the problem is of it not being on vita. Just use remote play.

The Vita is a portable console and I don't actually personally broadcast a 0-latency connection to my home network which makes using remote play remarkably difficult.

Yes, because having absolutely no latency is essential when playing a JRPG.

I played most of the Ground Zeroes side-ops on Vita.

I think the Vita headline was no mistake from Sony's blog. This will put more pressure on Square Enix in the long run. Fans will blame Square more than Sony.

I believe it was Square people that put up the blog post and that Vita was mentioned twice. Some sick trolling there?

Listening is happening:

Wow 900+ posts on GAF on Type-0 in around half an hour! Now we *have* to make it happen right?

Hopefully that extends to the Let It Die thread!

If anything this whole plan might backfire on them as the game most definitely isn't up to console visual standards and not many will pay $400 to play it. They're doing a disservice to the FF fanbase which is largely existing on PS3 already.
Man...... this company can't even catch a break now. They are a mess. Good luck in trying to sell a Type-0 HD port without significant visual upgrades on current gen. They had a better chance on the Vita, where it could have sold decently in Japan without getting mocked for a lazy port job.

SE can't even figure out how to release their games. Kingdom Hearts HD releases are exclusive to the PS3 while 3 is coming to PS4/XB1. FF X|X-2 HD were on PS3/Vita and Type-0 is PS4 and XB1. Seriously, what the hell is wrong with this company? A PS3/Vita version of Type-0 would have made far more sense than a PS4/XB1.

Thank you for this info. I think that SE is trying to "kill two birds with one stone" with Type-0 HD . One being to please the fans by bring FF type-0 to the West the only unreleased FF game in years. Second by being exclusive to next gen platfrom there trying to build install base in Japan for XV and having a Vita version could mean it could not be effective in that. It also seems it's really early in development which could mean we won't be seeing XV any time soon. By that last part is just speculation based on that they have shown nothing.

yeah, Vita owners want this so bad while sell this on PS4/Xbone makes no sense, mass market doesn't know this and SE think they can sell better on PS4/Xbone. Let's hope they don't set their expectation likes Tomb Raider

I thought the same at first, but trying to increase your audience with a high def remaster of 3 years old PSP game, in a country where handhelds and mobile gaming dominate the market might not be a good idea to be honest.

The only reason I can think of why SE refuse to release vita version is because they're planning to charge $60 for this game without meaningful visual upgrade so they dont want a cheaper $40 vita version on the market.

The mass market knows Final Fantasy, though. I know people who bought Lightning Returns just because it's a Final Fantasy game. As much as it hurts to say, the same people never play their games on a handheld.

Drakengard is virtually invisible as a PS3 game in 2014. Murdered as well, which had to move to PS4 to even stand a chance at getting noticed. KH2.5 is clearly too far along to move it.

It makes literally zero sense to put anything on PS3 in 2015 when they can put it on PS4 instead. This way it can be in people's game libraries and easily accessible for the next decade, instead of on a machine that many are going to unplug in 2 years, if they haven't already.

I just read an interview with the CEO of Ubisoft, and he said the thing surprising him most about the release of Watch Dogs is how fast people have abandoned PS3 and 360. He thought WD would sell a lot more on those, and it didn't. Titanfall didn't either. I'm sure SQEX has the same data available as they released Thief, Tomb Raider (GOTY/DE), and Murdered all cross gen as well. This is also why you now see a lot of fire sales on PSN for PS3 retail games for $5. Because in about a year they are going to be worth $0.

Those must be a dying breed, if they could stand the whole trilogy.

Yeah it's weird but as I've speculated it is trying to kill two birds with one stone no other FF remasters could do that.

A game has a better chance to sell on Vita in Japan than on both PS4 and XB1 in multiple regions? The game could be Half-Life 3 on Vita and a straight port of Type-0 would do better on the consoles.

Drakengard 3 was bound to bomb, no matter which hardware it was on (sad but true). A lot of Final Fantasy fans still have a PS3. I doubt many of them brought a PS4 just to play... what? Final Fantasy fans will buy a PS4 for Type-0, but how many? A lot of them will be mad for sure that they are missing out on this game, because it is on PS4.

I am not saying putting it on PS4 is a bad decision, but they should have looked into other platforms as well. Now that they settled on the PS4 version of the game, they have a lot more to do than a simple port with uprezzed graphics. In other words, they are just going to burden themselves with extra work, while most people would have been just happy with a HD Type-0 and official localization for it. That is, of course, if they were planning to release Type-0 in 2015.

The other examples that you gave are not really worthy here. Tomb Raider and Thief were all brand new reboots, making them new IPs in general, and were targeting the current gen systems for the most part. Same goes for Watch Dogs, which was delayed from November to May, making its previous gen version rather irrelevant.

I have a PS4. I will get Type-0 on PS4. I am not port begging here. Just commenting on the stupidity of the company -_-

Umm.... I never implied as such. I am not insane enough to say this comment. My comment was specifically related to Japan.

I was just talking about the game selling more on Vita and PS3 than on PS4 in Japan. Judging from the recent multiplatform releases in Japan, and the slow hardware sales of the PS4.

I'll just end with one last point on it. How is someone a "FF fan" if they plan on skipping Final Fantasy XV? They will have to get a PS4 or an X1 anyway, so they won't be missing anything.

If they are fine missing Type-0 and XV, they're not really "FF fans" in the current sense. Not to mention missing the better version of XIV: ARR as well.

A lot of them might be still holding out because there is no release date for Final Fantasy XV. Come on, it is pretty clear from this Type-0 announcement that XV won't even make it to 2015. Not many people are interested in getting a PS4 now, when they can have a better RPG lineup on the PS3 (Xillia 2, Zesteria, Persona 5, HD 2.5 ReMIX). I am talking about JRPG fans here. Hopefully from 2015 and beyond, things start looking better for PS4 in term of RPGs, because this year has nothing for us.

My comment solely relies on SE releasing Type-0 in 2015, and by 2015, I don't mean late 2015.

SE are even uming and arring about releasing this in Japan.

Fuck you, Playstation blog writer dude. Isn't that supposed to be a semi-official thing?

Could just be me, but that Shahid Ahmad comes off as a guy who just talks and doesn't back it up. He seems to have a lot of declarative statements that haven't led to anything. I haven't been following Vita all that much, so I could be wrong. Just basing it off the tweets I see in GAF from him.

In relation to the topic, I'm glad FF Type-0 is coming to the West in any kind of form. I frankly gave up on it.

He's been able to get Tales of Hearts R and a bunch of fantastic indies onto the Vita, and if anything he is probably the best chance Type-0 Vita fans have. The guy is clearly passionate about his job (and more importantly the greatest system ever, the Vita), which he wouldn't have if he can't provide the goods so I think people need to lay off him.

Would a remake of a PSP game which they have probably already played be that big of a system seller in Japan though?

At some point you need to move on and I think it’s ok for SE to take the first step into the current gen. We don’t know when Type-0 will come out, might happen simultaneously with a release date announcement for FFXV, so then there would be a reason to get a PS4. Also, I wouldn’t say that JRPG fans have no interest in the console right now, since probably many, myself included, assumed that it will eventually become the JRPG console of choice and bought it just on this guess alone.

Though the most important thing is, someone who likes Final Fantasy isn’t necessarily a JRPG fan (I’m speaking of the western audience here), so Square doesn’t need to rely on this group to drive their sales.

I have a PS4, and I should be happy this game is finally being localized. But really this game should've been on Vita as well.

Didn't FFX Vita do well?

Yes, it did. Which is even more surprising.

Why is a PSP port taking so long to release?

S-E don't see the benefit of releasing a PSP game in English past the PSP's lifespan, even though a smaller company has like 3 being planned for a 2014 release.

Lightning Returns sold terribly. The mass market didn't care for it at all.
